I made a preconception visit with my OBGYN I wanted to use as a new patient and they couldn't get me in for 2 months. By the time the appointment rolled around I was already 6 weeks pregnant. Lolol

When I found my PCP I think I had to wait somewhere around 6-8 weeks to get in with her. Although since that time I've had to see her twice for somewhat urgent issues and she got me in once same-day (very urgent issue) and once next-week (less urgent issue). So I feel like she keeps spots open for her current patients who are actually ill, which I appreciate.

My OBGYN was worse. I can't remember how long it took me to get in to see her the first time. I want to say like 4+ months or so. And even as a current patient you can't just call and schedule your yearly exam a month out. You really need to schedule it like 3-4 months in advance at least. But again, I have had lots of times where I was having an actual problem and she got me in either same day or within a few days.

So over all, I don't really mind that it takes a while to get in for well-visit appointments because I think that means that they are very responsive to sick visits.

@ineebee: my husband has been making dermatologist appts 4-6 months in advance (earliest he could get) with the idea that "I'll probably have something that needs to be looked at by then"

in some states (like MA where we live) you don't need a referral for OBGYN. I had no trouble getting into the OB I wanted when I was pregnant, but it's totally different because a) you have a definite need to see them and b) they make a ton of money off births so those patients are gold

@birdofafeather: I'm glad it was worth the wait for you! :) And thanks, for me, "good" is now defined "first available."

@bhbee: A year??? That's insane!! I tried looking at the outer suburbs, and the wait there was even longer. Maybe I'll try looking at the outer outer suburbs... o_O

@googly-eyes: That's encouraging! If/when I get pregnant, I think I may have to go that route too - with the referral from the doctor I haven't seen yet. :P Good to know that that actually works, though!

When I got pregnant I had to see my PCP for a confirmation to be referred to an OBGYN because back then we were on HMO insurance. However, I had already been added to a certain medical group when I got my insurance plan. So even though I hadn't picked a doctor and I hadn't seen anyone in the group it only took I think 1 to 2 weeks. I saw my OB a couple weeks later.

Sorry you're having to wait so long!

VENT! Our new health insurance cards came in today, so I didn't waste any time trying to schedule an appointment for a physical in our new city. After calling 10+ doctors' offices, I finally found a doctor who is taking new patients. But the next available appointment was frikkin FEBRUARY!

After that, I went through the same circus for an OBGYN, and I now have an appointment for March, 2014. This is unbelievable! Anyone with me?

That is really annoying. My doctor's office is good about this and if they are running behind they always tell us how many patients the doctor has in front of us, etc. Last visit I was hooked up to the NST for 30 minutes instead of the usual 15-20 but then it turned out the midwife I was supposed to see had to go to a delivery so a different doctor had to see us. I can't complain, I used to go to an OB/GYN office that had like 10 doctors and they were always way overbooked and sometimes I would wait in the waiting room for an HOUR after my appointment before even being taken back. At my primary care physician's office, I'm frequently in the exam room for at least 45 minutes before a nurse practitioner (not even the doctor) finally makes it in. I always just appreciate being told what's going on.

@MamaMoose: Our primary prenatal caregiver was a midwife who didn't have delivery privileges at our hospital, so she didn't have that excuse, lol.

BUT the bulk of our waits seemed to be caused by other patients having questions/problems, so I never minded too much, because she would sit and answer every damn question I had, no matter how long it took.

I think the longest we ever had to wait was an hour and a half, about half of it in the exam room.

@MamaMoose: I'm with you on this. I used to get really angry until the doctor who checked me in at 2:30am then delivered my baby at 2:30pm. I know he had appointments, b/c I had one with him at 3 that day had I not gone into labor. I definitely try to be more understanding.

I hate that!! What's the point of an appointment if you're not going to see me until 2 hours later?! And the consultation is less than 5 minutes. Arg. I understand emergencies come up but they should at least inform us how far behind they are so we can make more use of our time and come back a lil later?

Not baby-related, but I once waited 55 minutes IN the room (like you!) for the surgeon to come perform a wide local excision for a melanoma check. I got checked in by the nurse who said the doctor would "be right in." Almost an hour later...he was (then on top of it, he seemed rushed the whole time). Not cool.

I'm sure this is common knowledge to most people, but I never really thought about it until I started working in Doctor's offices. The waits are almost always caused by other patients! The Doctors/nurses aren't just sitting around back there making small talk while we twittle our thumbs in the waiting room (this is totally what I pictured, haha!)

In my experience it's caused by 3 things: 1) Patients earlier in the day arriving late for their appointments pushing everything back, 2) Patients with LOTS of questions or issues that the Dr's weren't anticipating and didn't build enough time for in the visit, but want to be thorough in answering, 3) Procedures that don't go as planned etc.

I can only speak for myself and for our office but we feel REALLY bad when there is a delay.. and we will apologize for it even when it's not our fault. The worst part about it is getting attitude from patients when there is nothing we can do about it. :(

Hint: shortest wait times are ALWAYS first thing in the morning and first thing after lunch- no people in front of you to slow the Doctors up!

My BIL's wife and I were about a month apart in our pregnancies. I felt a little funny because she announced first and then I found out I was pregnant. She announced early (like the stick was still wet early) we actually wanted to wait until we went to our first appointment. So there was a good deal of time in-between the announcements. But then it was really fun to be pregnant at the same time and have babies going through the same stuff at the same time.

DH's sister told us she'd be really upset if we got pregnant before her and her DH. She struggled with infertility for 7 years before having her baby this Christmas. When we found out she was expecting, we started TTC a few months later, and our kids will be 4 months apart. We waited until 16 weeks to tell his family, so she could enjoy her showers and everything. We were hoping to wait until after she delivered but it just didn't work out that way.

We felt the need to be courteous of her because of the infertility struggles. Our timeline was to start TTC on our 1 year anniversary, I don't know if we would've changed that if she hadn't gotten pregnant. It just all worked out.

If anything, think of it as GOOD timing! I have 3 cousins that were all born within a year of me, and it was wonderful growing up with cousins so close in age.

ETA: It's easy to get wrapped up in the 9 months before the baby's born, but you'll have a lifetime after that - so what if your showers/births/etc overlap? Once they're both born it'll be a non-issue. Good luck!
