we live on a main road, at the bottom of a hill..and fire dept is at the top of said hill. SO. ANNOYING. it happens at least once every other day.

she has gotten used to it, but in the earlier days I'd go rock her and hold her for the rest of her nap :(

@gracecat: well, I do white noise already, but that only drowns out so much noise. Sirens right next to his bedroom in the middle of the night 3 times in a row doesn't get drowned out easily...

Things I tried with my lo:

keeping the lights off and waiting to see if she went back to sleep

rocking, patting, rubbing her back, bouncing, walking

bottles, even months after she stopped having a night time feed. Heck I'd still try it now if I were desperate lol.

Redoing all or part of the bedtime routine

I usually tried the last couple after the first ones failed.

For now I nurse back to sleep if something like that happens. But if you aren't nursing, I'd probably take her out and play quietly for half an hour then try bedtime again. When she is so worked up trying to put her right back down won't work.

Today I put L down like usual, and about an hour later 3 police and fire vehicles raced past our house with blaring sirens, waking him up, and making him a little hysterical.

How do you get your baby back to sleep after something like this? I feel like he's wide awake right now and I obviously cannot rationalize with him that it's still bedtime.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I always let LO play in his crib until either 7 or until he starts really fussing. Sometimes DH will go in and change his diaper and put him back in the crib, in the hopes that he'll go back to sleep - it worked today actually, LO woke up at 6, got a diaper change, and must have fallen back asleep at some point (I did too) because I woke up at 8am and he was still asleep!

If I get him out of his crib early, I'll have to feed him early, and that throws off his schedule for the day.

She usually goes from asleep to crying, so if it's 7 or later I get her immediately. If its before 7 I try to leave her in there to either go back to sleep or play until 7.

E has been waking up at 5:45 this past week and more than once I've brought him to my bed and put him in the middle (me on one side and wall on the other) to just let him babble and entertain himself while I get another 20ish minutes of sleep. When he's bored he whines and we get up.

If the first number on the clock is anything smaller than a '6,' they're stayin' in there! Usually they just talk to themselves and play with their hands, etc. I go in if they are hysterical, of course, but that almost never happens.
Of course, there are the rare exceptions. This morning, for example, DS (5.5 months), screamed out at 5:40. Something was WRONG; he wasn't that mad for no reason! Sure enough, he had hit his head against the top of the crib. Poor little guy :-(

I don't think it will damage him. Babies are entertained with so little. I definitely think if he was upset/distressed in any way he would totes let you know.

All that being said I can't comment on how long to leave him since we cosleep.

We co-bed but there have been times when P wakes REALLY early and is happy so I let her play in her crib until 1. she starts to fuss, 2. she falls back asleep, or 3. I manage to wake myself up however long that may be.

Really as long as he's happy I wouldn't worry! He's safe in his crib and you getting more rest is better for him later. =)

DS (9.5 Months) has been waking up at 5 in the morning these past few days, which is much too early for me. So, I admit that I've just let him hang out in his crib for....oh....say until 6:30 when I finally peel myself off of the couch. I figured if he really really needed me, his cries would tell me that, but I'm also wondering how he manages to entertain himself for that long! I'd be bored to death if it were me! So, how often do you leave your LO in their crib for some extra shut-eye and for how long? Or do you think I should tend to him sooner because this much alone/quiet time might damage him in some way?

I'm a night owl as well and most nights I try to sleep by midnight-1am. My LO usually wakes up between 6:30-7am so I end up getting about 6 hrs on average. On rare nights when I fall asleep around 10pm, I wake up at 4am and can't go back to sleep....so annoying.

Husband and I could sleep until noon if we had the opportunity. Having a baby has definitely made us into early worms. We're still night owls too though. I try to get to bed before midnight so I get a good 6-8 solid hours of sleep.

It seems like our kiddo is destined to be a night owl. She usually goes down late (sometimes not until 1am!) and wakes up for the day around 11 or noon. Which is awesome, since that's my schedule of choice too!

Absolutely!!! Even on mornings when Rob Sr. specifically tells me he wants to treat me by letting me sleep in, I'm still downstairs by 9:30am at the very latest. This would have been unheard of before baby... I'm like you guys, 3am would be a good bedtime for me and I could sleep til 2pm if no one woke me up. But now, especially now that I'm back at work, I start to crash SERIOUSLY early (think 8pm) but we generally go to bed around 11 or 11:30. We try to go upstairs by 10:30 so we can sleep by 11.

Mr. Bee and I have always been night owls. A 3am bedtime is just about right for us. But now that we're parents we have to go to bed early. I try to go to sleep by midnight every night -- it's been easier lately because I'm so darn tired from being pregnant.

Mr. Bee wakes up with Charlie so I can usually sleep til 7:30am every morning if Charlie wakes up early. :)

What time do you go to bed and wake up? Have you become an early bird out of necessity?
