@Emsmems: same here re: CIO! I decided to just deal with the issues since I wasn't willing to do that (don't have it in me, plus I've tried waiting for him to settle himself but it always winds up with him escalating and crying more). I'm sorry you're dealing with the chronic catnapping too. It can be maddening. I really do recommend the No-Cry Sleep Solution! It's making me feel a little more sane, since it helped me create a plan.

LO 1 was a horrible napper between 4-14.5 months.... :( Maybe I should have napped trained her but we just dealt with it until she did it on her own! I don't recommend waiting as long as we did!

@DigAPony: same as you... Short catnaps all day... 30 min usually but sometimes less and rarely we'll get one 1 hour nap/day. DS is 14 weeks. I will do CIO if I have to, but I don't think he's ready for that yet and I guess I'm not desperate enough yet, either!

@Emsmems: ah, sorry, I kept forgetting to reply! Things didn't get a whole lot better. I'd just been dealing with it (since I'm not willing to do a cry it out method) until recently--things started to get even worse, so last week I read The No-Cry Nap Solution and am starting to use some of the techniques. It seems to be going better.

Are you having nap issues?

@DigAPony: I'm curious as to how things are going now? And if your naps are better is it because you did something different or did they just gradually get better?

@MrsStormy: Glad your situation is improving a little! Sometimes my babe is cheerful after a short nap, and I've learned not to force it then--sometimes he is clearly still tired, though, and it's so frustrating to rock him back to sleep every 5 minutes. Oh well.

@illumina: Thank you so much for laying out how all of that worked for you guys! I really appreciate it. I'm still nursing to sleep so I think that may be part of the problem--it's so hard to stop the habit when it usually works so well! I think it will go better once my guys learns to soothe himself better with his hands, like you said about S and her thumb--he likes to suck on his hands and it comforts him but he hasn't yet figured out how to do it without waking himself up. Thanks again!

@DigAPony: OK, so she was able to put herself to sleep on the odd occasion since she was around 6wks old and we'd stopped nursing to sleep. Usually that was at night or for the first nap of the day when we read her sleepy cues just right and got her down straight away. For most naps/night time we were still holding her for the duration or holding and transferring (though this only worked at night).

Then around 10wks I started getting her to fall asleep next to me on the sofa or on the bed...I just put her down whilst I continued to look at my laptop and ignored her fussing for a few minutes until she fell asleep. Then a couple of weeks later she became too alert to sleep if I was nearby, because she just kept opening her eyes when she was almost out and staring at me!

So by 12wks we decided to get serious about her sleeping in her cot, by herself for naps and night time sleep. She could consistently suck her thumb at this point and about half the time we put her down she'd fall asleep after a little whining for maybe a minute. The rest of the time I ended up rescuing her if she didn't settle right away and holding her for the duration of her nap.

A week later I decided I'd had enough and Dh was supportive of me letting her CIO until she fell asleep because we could tell she was working on soothing with her thumb and she needed to get more consistent at it. The first nap she cried on and off for 20mins, next 2 naps 10mins. The next day there was no crying...just 30 seconds or so of fussing and she was out. At just over 4mths now we have pretty much no fussing. If she's not quite tired enough when I get her down, she'll look around for 15-20mins before falling asleep without a sound.

I know CIO isn't for everyone, especially at this age but it worked great for us...I think she was ready to be left to settle and responded instantly. I would do it again in a second because it improved our lives so much!

We still have this nap problem at almost 18 weeks. She is the queen of 20-30 minute naps and no matter what I would do she would not go back to sleep, but like illumina, she was cheerful and awake so I eventually stopped forcing it. She has gotten a little better, and takes a few longer naps a week, so that is an improvement.

@illumina: Thank you! Glad to hear this doesn't sound abnormal. And you're right, it totally feels like Groundhog Day around here. How did you get S to start going back to sleep on her own? Just stop rocking her back to sleep? Did you have to deal with her being overtired before she got the hang of it? I might start trying that here in a few weeks.

It's funny how quickly they change into alert little beings who can't sleep through everything!

Very very normal! S used to take exactly 30min naps for a long time, but she always seemed refreshed after them so I would get her up and start the routine again (we did EASY back then). It felt like groundhog day because there were so many naps. I think around 12wks/3mths she started consolidating her sleep into nice 1.5hr naps, so you might not have long to wait.

Also, others may disagree, but around that time we stopped using rocking to sleep and started getting her to fall asleep on her own. It meant that each time she woke during a sleep cycle, she could learn to put herself back to sleep the same as at the beginning of the nap.

S is 4mths old and whilst we have the occasional 30min nap, they are usually 1.5-2hrs now.

Hang in there! And BTW my first night in hospital I had to wake her every few hours around the clock to nurse and I actually asked the nurse on duty if there was something wrong with my baby because she didn't seem very wakeful. If only I knew! ;)

Hi moms! I have a nap question. My son is 10 weeks old and rarely sleeps straight through his naps--he usually wakes several times and I go in and rock him back to sleep pretty easily, so I know he's still tired enough to need sleep, but then (usually) pretty soon he'll wake back up again anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes later. I just keep putting him back to sleep until I can tell that he's ready to be up and/or if he actually gets a decent uninterrupted stretch.

Also, his nap routine is the same as his nighttime sleep routine; I change him, swaddle him, nurse him, turn on white noise, and keep the room as dark as possible. He's able to sleep for longer chunks at night (anywhere from 2-6 hours) so I'm not sure why it's so hard to keep him asleep during daytime naps. Does this sound normal? He'll fall asleep in my arms/after I nurse him, so is this just a case of baby wanting to sleep on me and not on his own? It's so frustrating to go and rock him back to sleep so often because nap time is the only time I can get anything done around the house! Plus, I'm of course worried about him getting quality sleep. Thanks in advance!

P.S.--My first day alone with baby he took an amazing three-hour nap and I thought "Ha! This is easy!" If I only knew… :silly:
