@pelikila: He still hasn't gotten his eye teeth (the sharp canines I think?) so I keep wondering if it isn't that. I tried the advil last night and he went down a little better. But he was such a terror the night before - we are basically in this cycle of Day 1 - TERROR, Day 2 - Better, Day 3 - TERROR Day 4 - Better, and so on, because he's so so tired every other day from being up so long that it's easier for him to just pass out!

@Honeybee: @MamaMoose: I wondered about the night terrors too - we went out and got him a night light last night and it has Buzz and Woody from Toy Story (his favorites right now) and put it in his room where he can see it from his crib, so I think he liked having that. We talked to him alot about how we're right there and we'll protect him. Last night was definitely better but we'll see if it helps long term...

He can communicate enough to pull our heartstrings and yell our names, but not really enough to where he can tell us what is going on! Frustrating!

Is there any sign of teething (2-yr molars)? Those teeth are supposedly the slowest to come in and the most disruptive. This seems to be holding true for my son. Have your tried a little dose of tylenol or advil to see if that helps? Maybe it is a pain that your LO is having trouble telling you about.

A pediatrician friend of mine told me 2 is the age of fear and that was very true for my DD. Around 2 is when she started talking about things being "scary", she started having nightmares and she became afraid of the dark.

If you can, you might talk to your son outside of bedtime and ask him what's going on. It's really common for kids to start developing simple fears like fear of the dark or separation anxiety at this age. If you can talk to him about what is causing his behavior you'll be able to come up with solutions to address it (e.g. now we leave one of our DD's lights on so she doesnt get scared of the.dark).

Is it possible he's having night terrors? That would make him wake up and scream and also probably make him scared to go to sleep. If you can get him to calm down enough I would try to get him to communicate what he's upset about/scared of.

My son turns 2 in about a month and he's recently gone compeletely bananas about bedtime. We used to just lay him down and he'd go to sleep with no problem. Now, sometimes he will go down without a peep, then wake in the middle ofthe night and scream for two or three hours at a time. Sometimes even when we are in the room he's just carrying on and on. Last night he was screaming and yelling from his bedtime at 8 until around 11. We try everything: ignoring him, telling him to calm down on the monitor (he'll be standing up in his crib holding onto the rail jumping up and down like he's on a freaking trampoline), rocking him, sitting in there with him... what is heartbreaking is that he's old enough to talk so he's just sobbing "Mommy... Daddy.... Mommy..... Daddy..." It just wrecks me to listen to him.

We have a solid routine - bath every other night, pajamas, a cup of milk & a book, brush the teeth.... so that isn't it. And we're pretty consistent about the time we put him to bed.

One of my coworkers said his sons did this same thing and that he just thought that the brain was making connections and the kid was becoming more aware and they just freaked out a bit. That is was a phase that passed.

Any other thoughts? I am sleepy and frustrated. Maybe just "this too shall pass"? He goes to daycare and we both have full time demanding jobs so it totally sucks!

Funny that I see this post today ... I think Baby Y's morning nap was so short today because he pooped. Normally he wouldn't wake up or would go back to sleep, but it was a harder one that was probably difficult to get out. He's recently been eating meats and grains in his purees and is probably feeling the effects. Back to prunes!

When my son wakes up from a nap because he pooped, I change and put him back to his crib. He's fallen asleep consistently.

@Cchoi4: Elimination Communication, sorry. We basically put DS on the potty. He loves it and gets all excited and knows what to do lol. We've been doing it part time since he was about 2 months old, but have really gotten into it the last few months. I think I saw a few posts about EC floating around here :)

Lo wakes up with a poo in the morning, but never earlier than her normal wake up and she hasn't poo'd during a nap yet. Once she wakes up she's impossible to get back to sleep so I wouldn't bother.

DS hasn't pooped in his sleep since he was a newborn. We EC, so I think that really helped him "hold it" because now he doesn't go at all unless we give him the opportunity to.

Every. Single. Morning. For some reason my son has a bowel movement around 4;30 or 5 am every morning and that is what wakes him. If it is the middle of the night we can get him back to sleep but it can take a little doing. I asked the pedi if there was anything we could do to help get my son's bowel movements to a more convenient time frame but alas, not so much.

If it were just a nap, then we likely wouldn't try to put him back to sleep unless it was the start of a nap rather than after a sleep cycle.

sometimes olive poops in the middle of the night (usually in the early morning like 5am), but i can always get her back to sleep. i don't think she's woken up from a nap poop since she was a newborn. although she's only 4 months old :-)

Does your little one wake up (from a nap) because they pooped? Do you try to put them back to sleep after you change them?
