Good tip! I'm just about to throw LOs wubbanubs in the washing machine. Those things get nasty.

Just a PSA re: cleaning musty smelling wubbanubs. Add some vinegar to the wash and add an extra rinse cycle. They are now back to normal!

I searched for a while on here and google bc my 5 month old loves sucking on the limbs of his wubbanub. It was constantly soaked and started smelling musty. Washing on the gentle cycle wasn't cutting it (http://www.wubbanub.com/faqs.html). Luckily, vinegar was the trick :)

I have some serious staining on my covers from my daughter's messy solid food eating, which bums me out. Not enough to wash them religiously, obviously. But still, they used to be so cute!

I like Rockin Green, but we have pretty easy water. I use Classic Rock and I push all the buttons on my machine (extra rinse, stain cycle, whatever). Cold wash.

Every couple months I do a soak with Funk Rock for the ammonia and a very hot (turn up the hot water tank) wash with multiple rinses to strip.

Inserts go in the dryer, covers hang to dry. I also have staining when they don't get sun, but like @sarac: I don't care because it's on the inside where no one sees it.

I use that detergent, with a heavy hot wash. Then I dry them on hot. That's it, I don't do any of the crazy wash cycles. The downside to that is that I do have some light staining on the inserts. As something designed to catch poop, I don't mind.

We do: cold rinse, hot wash with detergent, cold rise, cold rinse. Once a month or so I add a tiny bit of bleach, and every couple weeks I add vinegar to the rinse (helps with removing hard water residue/detergent). Whenever I have had issues, a couple of washes with nothing but water usually help.

Our wash cycle is the following in an HE front loader:

Cold clean cycle (cold wash/cold rinse/spin turned off) with Funk rock, and auto soak (automatically adds 30 minute soak)

Sanitize cycle (hot wash, cold rinse) with Hard rock, with auto soak and extra rinse.

I take all the covers/pockets out and hang dry, and then dry the wipes, inserts and my fitted diapers on hot. If I am in a rush, I then take out the wipes, inserts and fitteds and dry the covers on low.

HE Front Loader with extreme hard water
- put diapers in
- do a prewash with calgon water softener, no spin, cold
- warm wash (per instructions Grovia), calgon water softener, DROPPs detergent, extra rinse and spin on heavy soil
- cold water wash, extra rinse and spin with calgon water softener
- Rinse 1 - 5 more times depending on how things are going (are there still suds). I usually remove the shells after like 1 rinse.
- Put into drier on low heat for 3 hours until dry.

Subscribing! We're having some ammonia issues, too. I'm having an email conversation with Abby's Lane right now to figure it out. We just switched to Tide, so hopefully stripping and then a good routine will help.

I just moved, but at my old house, with a top loader this was my system:
-plop diapers in, put on hot/cold wash with an extra rinse but leave lid open
-put in the 2 Tbs of Rockin' Green Hard Rock
-let it soak overnight
-close lid in morning and let it finish (with that extra cycle)
-wash again with no extra cycle, cold/cold
-hang dry

The only time I ever had any issues was with the bad batch of Rockin' Green from sometime I think in 2010. No buildup, no ammonia, nothing!

Also, our washer was giant--far larger than the regular wash tub size, so that was nice too!

That seems strange to already be getting ammonia. I would add an extra rinse to your current routine and also add a 1/4 cup of bleach to your next wash cycle to get rid of the bleach.

Do you have hard water? I have read a lot of people don't actually like Rockin' Green for their diaper especially if they have hard water.

My routine;
One cold cycle with prewash of Bac-Out only
Hot cycle with a Tide Free and Clear with an extra rinse
One warm cycle

I have hard water and an HE machine so I have to do one more cycle to make sure all my suds get out. I got ammonia twice and that was when I was using too much detergent.

I wash together.

I do a COLD prerinse with just diapers.

Then I put everything else in WITH SOAP and wash HOT, rinse COLD, extra rinse.

It is not gross at all. In fact, once I ALMOST dried my diapers after the cold pre-rinse, and they were almost totally clean. I just thought hmmmm these are slightly stained more than normal.....then it hit me. So, I'm telling you, after the pre-rinse, they are almost totally clean and are super fine to wash with clothes.

Plus, the disposable diaper people get 'blowouts' all the time (which cloth diapers seem to avoid--yay) and those people are washing their clothes with the poop and it's all good.

My poop is still EBF. When it gets solids-yucky I'll be using a diaper sprayer, and suspect I can still then do the same routine.

I do... but it's complicated. First... rinse the diapers alone with HOT water. Then add the clothes. Then smell the diapers and make sure they actually came out clean. Move the clothes to the dryer, rinse the diapers again (to get out any detergent residue).
