Peanut butter pretzels are a favorite snack n our house and Dylan had just started really getting into nuts. Pecans seem to be soft enough for him. He can't get enough right now.

I also imagined four "meals" in a day instead of 3 (the 4th after nap) which helped me to give decent food more times because meat for Dylan is often a couple of bites. One usual face is meatballs. Trader joes has a party size that I keep in the freezer.

@brownie: N loves to snack all day if we let him, but that would be fruit only. Meat is just really a no go with this kid. I wish he would like meat. While I was pregnant with him I had a huge meat aversion. I ate nothing but fruits and veggies.

@MrsRcCar: one thing I had to embrace was my son was a snacked. So I had to have food I wanted him to eat out all the time. Salami and pepperoni (and hot dogs) were always available as snack foods. Fruits and veggies were kind of put on the back burner.

@MrsRcCar: neocate splash is essentially hypoallergenic with all of the proteins broken down. My guy had MSPI (and is still intollerant to soy at 3.5) and it made a world of difference. It's expensive but for us, it was worth it.

@Anagram: he can have coconut but he doesn't seem to care for the yogurt too much.
@Mrs Green Grass: I would love to get in contact with your friend.

@jedeve: he does smoothies sometimes although he isn't crazy about the super cold either.
@brownie: do you know if neonate splash is milk based?
@hellobeeboston: I have tried that in the past and he will just refuse to eat but perhaps if we start gradually taking some away he will do ok with it. He hates changes to his meal habits, he is other wise a pretty flexible kid.

We are thinking to find allergy friendly supplement we can add to his milk and sometimes soothies. Why do toddlers have to be so hard?

I'm sorry you are struggling! You will get there. It sounds challenging for sure.

I have to agree with @Mrs Green Grass: about the soy milk. Our son would drink only milk and not eat if we let him so we have to keep away the milk near mealtimes. He gets 5oz in the morning and sometimes 5oz in the afternoon but early enough before dinner. Last night he was begging for milk at dinner so I gave in and of course he didn't eat. So maybe try that?
LO loves pepperoni (especially the minis!) and kielbasa, have you tried that?

We did neocate splash after 1 year old and that helped a ton because it was very dense calories. My son ate all the time but wasn't putting on any weight (literally 4 hotdogs in a sitting). We just had to wait it out.

Will he drink smoothies? We have had some luck with those. Spinach blends up really smooth and is a good source of iron. Vit C helps you absorb it. Maybe spinach + OJ + a frozen banana? And some soy milk or yogurt if he wants the taste. Although I don't know how much calcium is added to that. Calcium inhibits absorption of iron.

I just looked at your meal schedule and have a few suggestions. I was really hard for us to get Dylan to eat solids when he are milk with or near a meal. And because of the iron issues we started doing milk only in the morning and at bedtime (sometimes before nap). It worked out really well. Your LO drinks a ton more fluid than Dylan does anyway, so switching that with higher cal foods might really up the weight gain. I wonder if you could add a rice cereal or even toddler formula to his soy milk to up the cals. We add whole milk powder to D's milk...it's definitely a million times harder with allergies!

I have a preemie friend whose son has similar allergies and weight issues if you want to get in touch with her.

D had anemia too. We've been on iron drops for about a year now. I worried about giving iron rich foods for awhile, but you get so little from food that the drops are really necessary. I just try to get him to take some vitamin c at the same time (usually juice) because it helps absorption.

@Anagram: N will only drink soy milk much to me trying anything else. He get s between 24-30 ounces of soy milk a day and would eat soy yogurt all day if you let him. We cook in olive oil already. He isn't real big in peanut butter at all. He would rather not have any meat (unless it's bacon).
Here is a typical day:
Breakfast
8-10 ounces of soy milk
One packet of oatmeal
1/2 a sausage patty
1/4 of dried cranberries and/or 1 cutie

Snack:
1 soy yogurt
8 ounces or so of dilutated juice

Lunch
8-10 ounces of soy milk
1/4 of an apple with daps of peanut butter that may or may not make it in his mouth
2 pieces of salami or ham
Sometimes carrots or chips depending on what's on hand

Snack:
Generally he skips this one and just drinks some dilutated juice but sometimes he will have a handful of puffs.

Dinner :
8-10 ounces of soy milk
Whatever we are having for dinner. Tonight it was spagetti with ground turkey. He only ate a little bit that he was served and declared himself done.

Nighttime snack: (sometimes he gets other times not so much)
1 cutie or 1 gf chocolate chip cookie.

He also gets water throughout the day.

We try not to force him to eat and also let him tell us when he is hungry but we aren't making much head way. He would content to live on fruit , veggies and bacon.

@MrsRcCar: Actually that's what we did. Our first ped was so kind and caring but it was a GI incident where he couldn't get an expedited appointment with GI at the children's hospital that made us wonder. We switched because he had so many specialists already in their system and the care is so much more integrated; there are no records to deal with. And the appointments are always expedited now - what used to be a 3-4 month wait is 2 days.

Do they have a primary care network closer to your home? That's an awfully long drive!

@spaniellove: I think I will call tomorrow and find out. I love the children's hospital that our boys are seen at. Plus I love keeping all their specialist care in one system. I am almost tempted to change their primary care there. The only huge draw back is the travel time of 1-2 hours in good weather. The doctors office out here is normally pretty good with the boys just last couple of visits their comments have stung. They have mentioned in the past setting him up with GI but we don't have a Peds GI doctor in town either. I do get a little annoyed that I am constantly reminding his doctor that dairy is a no go for him because they are always suggesting giving him yogurt and cheeses to help with his weight. :bummed: I know they mean well and I know they have a lot of patients but come on, read the chart.

@MrsRcCar: how is your toddler consuming large amounts of soy? What things does he eat successfully?

My LO is MSPI so we avoid all dairy and soy (and therefore most for of gluten because LO just doesn't like the carbs that are dairy and soy free),but she can eat eggs and loves them.

She typically eats oatmeal (half regular oatmeal and half baby oat cereal for iron) with fruit for breakfast, some kind of meat and veggie for both lunch and dinner and pouches or fruit for snacks. I cook all her foods with olive oil, and she's been gaining like gangbusters lately. She still gets 2 bottles (yup bottles at almost 18 months) and 1 sippy of hemp milk a day and water as needed. She recently started liking peanut butter off a spoon-- if your LO is only allergic to tree nuts you can try incorporating PB into meals. My LO mainly eats a "paleo" diet I guess but just because she doesn't like many carbs and she's still getting quite pudgy lately (which I love because when she was little we had gaining issues).

I'm sorry his weight is dropping and you have to deal with additional frustration. You deserve to have good care at the children's hospital.

I know it is no secret that we have had problems with N in the weight department. We have tried to no avail to get him to gain weight. He has stayed at his current weight until recently he is back on the backslide. He is teething which makes this issue 100% worse. We also found out recently that he has an allergy to eggs (we think). Which brings his no go food list to the following : Tree nuts, dairy, gluten, and eggs.
We also struggle with his iron levels being too low on account of the amount of soy he consumes.

I feel like such a failure when the doctor goes on about how skinny he is, and now we aren't 100% sure about egg allergy. The doctor was less then nice about things, but didn't really offer any other options.

I guess I am just overwehlmed between N's weight issues and E's feeding issues. I feel like I am drowning a little.
