DS is almost 2 but not a great talker yet. He did have strange choices for his first words - would say broom before consistently saying mama! The latest thing I don't know that it is surprising but I thought it was funny. We were all in the car and the baby was crying so DS told him to "be quiet!" He has never said that before or since but I'm sure it's not the last time we'll hear it!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: how could I forget - it's not everyday that you know someone that can play a piano piece by ear - and contemporary songs on top of that!!! I have ZERO musical ability and am so jealous of people with those skills/abilities!

Dd is 11 months old, and when you ask her "What does Max (our dog) say?" She goes "Woof". Then if you say "What does Elmo say?" She goes "La la la" (from Elmo's song). No one really taught her that so I'm surprised she can say it!

This isn't a crazy word, per se, but I was counting something out to her, and after I got to 4 she screamed 'FIVE!' at me. Whaaat?! We've never really worked on counting?! I do count to her sometimes, but never try to get her to count to me. (18 months and very few words, so I liked this one :) )

We were in a summer reading program. The theme for one class was colors - my LO has been able to identify colors for a long time. She also knows a lot of sight words and has most of her books memorized, but it's not like we drill her.

So at the class they had a worksheet with little mice and each mouse had a color written below it for the kids to color the correct color. I asked my LO what color the first mouse should be and she correctly told me "red" and picked up the red marker and colored it. This went on with blue, yellow, orange, green and purple (her favorite color. She has seen these words so many times that she can identify the words and pick the correct color.

Then we get to black and I think she's going to tell me blue b/c it's a "B" word...she tells me "black"...and again she surprises me by correctly telling me the next mouse is pink (again, I thought she was going to say purple b/c it's a "P" but somehow she knew)...and again she surprises me by knowing the next mouse is grey. I am just kind of shocked b/c I have never worked on this with her...I had no idea she could just read these colors. I thought there was no way she would know the last mouse...so I say "do you know what color this mouse is supposed to be? It's kind of a hard one." And she says right away "white." I was just floored.

She was 2 years 8 months last month when we were in the class. She was by far the youngest in the class, but was the one kid who could read all the colors on the page.

DS has been obsessed with scooters for months, so my mom finally bought him one of his own. We took the new scooter on vacation, still in the box. Turned out it needed some assembly. DS surprised me by bursting into tears when he heard: "Oh no, we don't have a screwdriver to put this together!" Then shocked me even more when he got off the scooter and stopped crying after I said "Daddy will find someone with a screwdriver while you nap!" He's usually all about right now - I had no clue he has that much patience or knows what a screwdriver is :)

Strange title huh.... What are some of the words / things that you are surprised your toddler knows at his age, that you probably didn't know when you were his/her age, or didn't even know until now?

LO is obsessed with trains, so we bought many books about trains. Some of the books teach about the name of each car (engine, tender, hopper car, gondola car, caboose), the different roles on the train (engineer, fireman, brakesman, conductor), and even the actual parts of the steam engine (I had no idea what pistons are until recently!). LO isn't into the actual components of the steam engine yet, but he definitely know about tender, caboose, engineer...etc. that to be honest, I had no idea what they are called until now.

And also, I didn't know what the different machineries (excavator, bulldozer, crane truck, cement mixer...etc) are called in a construction site. I wouldn't know if LO didn't have a great interest in the topic, and we just learned about them together.

Since I work with other people's children I find I have to toe the line carefully sometimes since different families deal with this differently. My general tactic after I run it by the parents is to tell them the correct name and then say that some people don't like hearing the names of private parts out in public so we use bottom and chest when we are talking near other people. It seems to work well since then they have the ability to describe a bigger problem and know that some conversations are best not had in line at the grocery store!

I know DH will want to use nicknames, but I think we should teach the proper names maybe around 2 years old?
Before that I'd probably say bum bum/booty/butt-butt.
I'm trying to figure out a discreet nickname for breasts since I don't want her shouting out boobies or breasts when she wants to nurse! And need something for vagina. "v" maybe?

Someone mentioned to me not long ago (can't remember who. Sorry! Come out and let me know if it was you) that they were teaching their LO the medical terms, (penis, vagina, etc.) so that if they were ever (god forbid) abused, they would know. Since the abuser would most likely teach them words like wee-wee or something else. So if they start calling it something else it would send up a red flag. I will probably do The same.

As for the word for butt? I don't know. Probably just butt. Lol

@JoJoGirl: we also say tushy!

DS says boobs. And seriously, coming out if a 2-yo mouth, it's pretty funny. We also use zizi for penis, it's the cutesy word the French use

We'll teach the correct terms. I get that some people think the little nicknames are cute, but to be honest, I just don't really see the point. Although some parts are private (which they will be taught!) I don't really believe in making up names for them like the real words are too embarrassing or something - I don't want my kids to feel like that about any part of their body. I mean, I wouldn't call his arm anything different than his arm, you know what I mean?

I was babysitting for my 2 year old nephew about a year ago and he came out of his room crying and telling me that his 'ting ting' hurt. I had ZERO clue what he was talking about. It turned out that a string from his underwear had come loose and was wrapped around his penis, but it sure would've been faster/easier to deal with if I had known what the heck he was saying! And +1 on what PPs have said about sexual predators as well. Really good article on it here that pretty much sums up my thoughts on it: http://thinkprogress.org/health/2013/04/23/1909631/kids-identify-genitalia-prevent-crimes/
