@Coffee-lover: I don't know if have diastasis recti or not, so I won't do any ab exercises until my 6 week apt next week.

I did a 30 minute barre dvd, and skipped the abs section just to be safe. I feel better already!

I had a c section. I have been walking almost everyday since 1 week pp, and started working out this week at 6 weeks pp. I think i have diastasis recti though, so I am being careful not to work my abs out yet.

I've been doing walks around the neighborhood or in the park for a couple of weeks now, so probably since 2 weeks postpartum, but I haven't started any other workouts yet. I, too, bought a yoga video that I'd like to start, but just haven't gotten to it yet.

I was a couple of weeks PP when I did my first workout video. I had no tearing/stitches/complications, so my orders were that I could start heavier activity after a couple of weeks. I did have heavier bleeding, so I sat out a week or so and then picked it back up at 3 weeks or so PP and it was fine.

If you feel like you're up to it, I think you should go for it. My midwife just said to increase activity as I could tolerate it and not do a ton of ab work until she checked me at 6 weeks. My hospital discharge instructions even said to try to do 10 min of activity 2x per day. Your yoga dvd will probably help a lot.

I started doing some SUPER light yoga at 4 weeks. I think I talked to my midwife about it at my 2 week check up. I was about 5.5 weeks when I went for my first postpartum run (slow jog). Listen to your body - if you feel uncomfortable you can always stop, and if you find you're bleeding during/after it probably means you did too much. I agree, exercise is how I stay sane!

When did you start exercising postpartum?

I jogged through my whole first pregnancy. (I wore a support band to keep my belly from moving too much)

This time, I'm finally getting back into it now that the nausea is subsiding, and I'm only doing 30 min workouts. I do the elliptical or a brisk walk for 15 min and then I do small weight circuit for the next 15 min (ie: squats, overhead press, bicep curls, overhead tricep extensions... 15-20 reps, repeat 2-3 times)

After trying (and wasting money on) a bunch of different DVDs, I found this one and really liked it. She has a different workout for each trimester, and most importantly I didn't find her annoying. The workouts are not super strenuous but you feel good afterwards.

At first I generally kept up with my pre-pregnancy routine (when I wasn't feeling too sick). My runs got slower over time, and I started doing more strength training through boot camp...with the instructor occasionally giving me mods as necessary. Right now, at 23 weeks, I'm on modified rest (no exercise) while my OB monitors my cervix. I plan to go back to my normal routine once I'm cleared (though I hate the disruption since I feel like it's going to be harder and harder to keep up my routine).

I took a spin class while I was pregnant and loved it! It was challenging but low impact. I also love weight training and jogging/walking. I think this combination kept me in fairly decent shape. My doctor even commented on my lack of belly fat that they had to cut through during my c section. I definetly took it as a compliment and was flattered!

@mrsmate: the tightness in your belly might actually not have been b/c you don't exercise...it might be b/c you're dehydrated! Make sure you drink lots...especially if you're hitting the gym or walking a good distance!

All I did was walk during the weekends. I got really tired after work during the week so I would put my leg up and rest up instead.

On my weekend walks, I would walk 4 miles every Saturday morning, just a nice leisurely pace.

Before pregnancy, no exercise other than my preschool students keeping me on my toes.
