Ugh, I have/had this. It started in the third trimester as numbness at night but towards the end of my pregnancy my right hand was numb all the time. I'm almost 2 weeks pp and I'm still numb but it's not as bad. Hoping it goes away for good soon!!!

Mine slowly started around 20-something weeks. Was occasional and tolerable. By the end of pregnancy, it was constant and in both hands/wrists. Braces didn't even help. I tried acupuncture and that did nothing either. It was terrible. I remember nights where I'd wake up in tears because it hurt so bad. It took a little while for it to go away postpartum too.

@blackbird: When did it go away? During pregnancy, or post partum?
@travellingbee: Ugh. Trigger finger, too? Boo. I hope it gets better soon!
@Mrs. Train: "As soon as I delivered it stopped" aren;t those magical words?
@MrsGeePerez: Did you get the wrist braces? So interesting to see how common it really is. I know the doctors say how common it is but, wow.
@JennyLayneAZ: Ugh! Can you also get a wrist support for your keyboard and/or adjust the height of your chair (or keyboard)?
@iluvboba637: Yeah... I was a medical assistant and couldn't draw up injections anymore and all my handwriting became typing because I couldn't hold the pencil straight.
@runnerd: Ugh, that is rough! I hope it's not as bad this time.
@mauxie: I wouldn't say almost painful, I would say actually painful. I'm a wimp.
@LovelyPlum: Hm, I hadn't heard of epsom salt helping. Interesting!

Did everyone mention it to their OB, or to their primary care/family doc?

I had it in both hands. It was awful. I used wrist splints for the last 10-12 weeks. I was also told that massaging your wrists up to your elbows can help, as does Epsom salt baths. It is caused by swelling around the nerve, or so I understand.

Me, especially at night. Started into the 3rd tri. So annoying and it keeps me up at night :(. My entire right arm/hand tingles and it's almost painful.

With LO1 I had wrist issues after she was born but they resolved after a few months. I wore a brace a lot of the time. I think it was more that I wasn't used to holding a baby so much hehe

I had pregnancy carpal tunnel with #1 starting around 25 weeks. It started as my hands falling asleep/numb when I slept, and progressed to daily pain that included my forearms, and was made worst by my desk job typing. I couldn't close my hands into a fist the last month or so of pregnancy. I remember almost crying several nights and begging DH for massages. I didn't treat it, just dealt.

This pregnancy, the hands falling asleep at night is already starting at 17 weeks, so I'm sorta scared for the future months..

I had it with my twins. I had to wear braces especially at night. It was such a pain I think it was around 20 weeks (six years ago so my memory may not be accurate) they called it carpal tunnel from swelling during the pregnancy. As soon as I delivered it stopped.

Me! On off all day and night long but especially with fine motor. I actually had extremely mild carpal tunnel pains once in awhile before my first pregnancy but nothing serious. Then carpal tunnel numbing ~18wks preg w DS which went away after birth but mild numbing returned after I weaned from the pump when DS was ~14months. Shortly before my BFP with this pregnancy the numbing disappeared only to return ~16 wks preg again and this time even worse. I can't open jars and my pincer grasp is terrible.

I wear wrist braces at night which helps from getting awoken from severe numbing but I still wake up with numb hands and mild soreness in the morning.

Mine are back again!

Did you have carpal tunnel, or something else?

I just get numb when I use my hands for fine detail stuff (small crafts, writing, and fine motor stuff).

Did you take any supplements or wear wrist braces?

When did it start for you? Did you get it in each pregnancy?
Talk to me about your hand symptoms.

I had this last pregnancy, too, and all I remember was "Oh, carpal tunnel is super common in pregnancy, wait this isn't carpal tunnel" and "It will go away when the baby is born" (it did).

I've done a lot of networking and also some cold reaching out to potential clients. I also have a lot of luck using freelancewritinggigs.com. I currently have 4 steady jobs- I write blogs for several businesses and also do some editorial work. There's also a lot of one-off jobs like press releases and things of that nature that I do. I agree a lot of it is about who you know and how they can lead to other jobs. Good luck!

@IRunForFun: I've never run into any issue with not receiving payment or anything, and have gained some very reputable clients (established, medium-large sized businesses) via Elance.

@Mrs. Yoyo: I really believe in "you get what you pay for", so there definitely are a lot of cheap bids on Elance, but a lot of businesses are getting wise to the fact that if they pay someone in India $2/hr to write content; they get what they pay for.

I do both creative and technical writing, but I've had good luck there. It certainly helps that I don't rely on that for income; and just take the jobs I want to take.

@travelgirl1: I've taken on two assignments for my primary client since having my second LO. It's pretty hairy. I don't have to do interviews for these projects -- if I did it would be next to impossible. Just research and writing. But even that has been really, really tough. With just one (who was a good sleeper) I could count on long naps and after bedtime, but now ... no. Basically, every spare moment is spent working if I have an assignment. I actually may go back to work FT. If I don't (and decide to continue to freelance) I will have to get some PT childcare -- the current situation is not sustainable!

@yoursilverlining: Glad to hear a positive story about eLance ... all I've ever heard is that it's really hard to get a foothold and that people are always undercutting you with crazy cheap bids.

@mfa_lady: Yup, just keep plugging away. Once you find someone willing to see what you can offer (and do an awesome job for them) the subsequent doors are much easier to open.

Sorry to thread jack but, @Mrs. Yoyo: are you still writing now you have two LOs? The last time I freelanced was literally the night before I had A - I had every intention of continuing after but can't imagine being able to arrange interviews because I have no idea if she'll be melting down in the background! I'd love to get back into it though.

I freelanced for about a year before having LO and for me it was all about the contacts. I was starting again in another country though, so I did a few shifts for free to build up trust. From that I managed to get a regular entertainment column in a newspaper and good relationships with editors on a few websites/newspapers that led to regular feature opportunities. I found that my six years journalism experience in England didn't help at all - it was literally all about the contacts I could make here. The problem was that the writing world is very volatile right now and editors are constantly moving around so their replacements will bring their own set of freelancers with them and it can be tough constantly starting again sweet talking editors.
My advice would be to contact the publications you really want to write for and ask if you can go in and meet them, or take an editor for coffee. Once they know and like you they will be much more likely to properly consider your pitch or offer you assignments. Good luck!

I've had very good luck on Elance. You really need to build a complete portfolio there; but once I did and built up some positive feedback, a lot of job listers started contacting me, asking me to bid on their projects. I was also able to turn a few one-off jobs into more steady work, with reliable partners.

I work FT, but take on freelance jobs as I like, which is nice!

@Mrs. Yoyo: Ack, yes, that's what I'm afraid of. It sounds like maybe I should keep putting feelers out until I can find a couple of good partners. More than anything, I'd just like to write--to have a reason to pick up the pen (or the laptop!), you know? It's sometimes so hard to do without a purpose. Thank you for responding!!
