We're vegan, and I can always find non-dairy (vegan) cake mixes at the store. I think there are some mainstream ones ... Simply use non-dairy milk, and a flax egg (if there's an egg allergy too).

@yin: I agree. My son recently outgrew his severe dairy allergy but I'd only be comfortable with my child eating store bought if I wasn't the one making it.

The policy at my LO's school is to only provide store bought treats where the ingredients can be checked. As a mom of a child who has food allergies (dairy, egg, and peanuts), I honestly don't trust another parent baking a treat. There are issues with contamination, and there are a lot of ingredients out there that people don't think to check (ex. chocolate chips).

The teacher will tell me in advance when there is a birthday celebration, and I bring in a cupcake for LO so that he doesn't feel left out.

Here are a few options if you want to bring a store bought treat: small cups of sorbet/water ice, enjoy life cookies (free of top 8 food allergies), Annie's bunny cookies, oreos (double check ingredients b/c it often changes), barnum's animal crackers, vienna finger cookies, gummy snacks, and jello.

I also don't like the idea of a second treat of fruit. Fruit isn't quite the same as a cupcake, and I learned my lesson when I brought in fruit for a holiday party. My LO skipped the fruit and only wanted special treats, most of which he couldn't eat. :bummed:

Keep in mind that it is difficult for children with food allergies. They often feel left out of birthday/holiday celebrations.

There have been a couple birthdays in my LO's class, and both times the families brought in hats for everyone (one did regular birthday hats and another did these animal visors which were so freakin cute: http://www.amazon.com/Foam-Zoo-Animal-Sun-Visors/dp/B003C6EQMW) plus a food that everyone could eat - one did watermelon and the other did popsicles (http://rubyrockets.com). My LO loved them both.

At that age, I would just find a different treat. We did the Yogurt squeeze tubes frozen. Which I realize doesn't help with your dairy issue.

Our daycare doesn't allow homemade goods either. I'd probably go down the path of fruit.

My son has allergies including wheat and the policy at his school is for me to bring him a special treat that I am comfortable with on the day that the birthday boy or girl brings their special snack for everyone else. The teacher told me this when we discussed allergies at the beginning of the year and I think it's great. I like to be in control of his food right now anyway (he's 2) and wouldn't expect a non allergy parent to bend over backwards changing everything. Will the school let you do something like that or at least have the teacher ask thge parent if they'd rather bring their own that they made? I could see people taking it the wrong way like "you should include everyone!" But like I said, I like it this way!

Some Duncan Hines cake mixes are dairy free. Moist Deluxe Lemon Supreme and Classic Yellow. They also make dairy free frosting - French vanilla creamy home style and I think the Pillsbury Whipped Vanilla icing is too.

ETA - I think some of the chocolate flavors are dairy free too. Just check the ingredient list on the box.

My daughter celebrates her 2nd birthday next week and at her school the kids can bring in treats to celebrate. I spoke with the teacher and one of her classmates has a dairy allergy. I was hoping to do the cup cakes in ice cream cones. My coworker gave me a vegan icing recipe thats really tasty. But i just looked at the pilsbury website and the cake mixes all contain dairy. I'm not into baking a cake from scratch on a thursday night after bedtime. What should I do here?

No rash or anything? No bruise? I might contact his Ped in the morning. If you can't see any evidence of "trauma" (irritated, bruised or scratches skin) just in case. In the meantime, I had a similar incident with Kaia but it was because of a bad rash. I put ointment on it and covered it with a bandage with the sticky on all sides to avoid urine or ,really, poop getting on it and infecting it.
