I actually found Reddit to be the most helpful!

It was a huge learning curve for me too but once I really got it, it's been great. So don't give up!

@HappyBaker: I need to commit to take some of those classes, thank you!

@mrs. high heels: That first link you posted was extremely helpful, thank you for taking the time to post all of those links. I'll dive into the credit card info more tomorrow night. Yes, I'm using the web version.

@disneybee: I'm using the web-based version, I'm not entirely sure how different it is. Your advice about sticking with the current bills (not previous) is helpful. That was one thing that was messing me up before because I thought I should be budgeting for the mortgage payment even though it already came out.

I really want to stick with this and do a better job of budgeting. Thanks guys!

It took me about about a week or two to "get" YNAB. Now, I've been using it for 3 years now, and I can't live without it. I watched some videos on YouTube to just get the hang of it first.

I'm using the Classic YNAB, and not the web based one, so not sure if it's the same. I would just input all of your accounts (checking, savings, etc), and only input current or upcoming bills. Do not input any past bills! For example, today is 8/9/17, and you may feel like inputting your rent/mortgage since it was due on 8/1, but if you already paid it and you're starting YNAB today, do not input that rent/mortgage. Cuz YNAB is only using the current money you have right now. Hope this isn't too confusing.

Good luck!

@winter_wonder: Here are step by step instructions I gave a friend of mine when she asked about how to setup YNAB:

1. Input the starting balances on all your accounts on the left hand bar. Your credit cards will automatically pop up as categories in YNAB under the master category "Credit Card Payments". This will always be there as long as you continue to use credit cards.
2. Fill in the "Budget" column in your cc categories. It needs to match the starting balance you have on each of your accounts. You only need to fill in the "Budget" column the very first month you use YNAB. In future months, the "Available" column will automatically match the numbers of your credit card on the left hand side.

After you setup your credit card categories, go ahead and setup the rest of your master and sub-categories, and budget those out.

@winter_wonder: Are you using the nYNAB (web-based one?). This link will be the quickest way to get started and setup - https://www.youneedabudget.com/learn/lunchbreak/

I also think the most confusing thing for most people to understand is how credit cards work and how to handle returns/reimbursements. I would read/watch all of these:

Guide: http://docs.youneedabudget.com/category/135-credit-cards-debt

They actually have their own training webinars which is what I used. I took them all over the course of a week or two:
https://www.youneedabudget.com/classes/

That really helped, but overall just using it two months helped me get it the most after that - you really need to witness the rolling over of categories in order to understand it I think.

Are there specific videos that helped you "get" YNAB? I want to be excited about it, but I'm really struggling with how to get in a groove. I find myself getting so frustrated with it!!!

How long did it take you to figure it out?

Is this thread still active or will there be a 2016 one? I have questions! :)
I have been using YNAB for years, but not following the "YNAB way" exactly.
As a result, I don't think my numbers match up exactly (checking account to YNAB). I want to "reset" so my numbers are correct from here on out, but I'm scared to screw everything up! :)
Any advice?

@TemperanceBrennan: I agree. Privacy, I can definitely get over. I don't put any real data in there that could be tracked back to me. People have argued (in the YNAB forums) that you can find ENOUGH info to get an idea about what kind of person you are, religious affiliation, ideologies, charities, hobbies, general spending habits.

@gotkimchi: I haven't read enough about their security credentials either. I know that I, initially, wouldn't be connecting my accounts to any of my banks. I'm just NOT ok with that. So, the rest of the privacy issue goes back to just not putting a lot of identifying info in my budget/notes. Which isn't hard. It just... sucks. It's definitely something I'm trying to work on getting over. LOL

@.twist.: I'm working through the same feelings. The bigger issue for me regarding the internet-only things is less about security (we don't have our account numbers in YNAB) or privacy - but being able to access it on our laptops or tablets when we don't have internet access - when we go to coffee shops and don't connect to internet (where we do our monthly budget meeting) or in the car during road trips (this happens pretty frequently with us).

@.twist.: I really agree with the web based! I want web based AND on my computer! I also was reading that some people were concerned they don't have the proper security credentials to keep your information safe - idk too much about that but it will be interesting to see what happens! I agree that the price seems high! I know they also said they won't cripple ynab 4 but idk why they would keep supporting it when they can make so much more money

@gotkimchi: Well, I've been reading about it a lot today trying to work through my feelings about it. Haha. As far as I've seen, YNAB is not even close to the most expensive option. With Dave Ramsay's competitor product coming in at $99/year. But it's also not the cheapest (although I've never used the cheapest option, so I can't compare).

There are a few issues I have with YNAB5:

1. I have known this was coming for a while. I understand why they want a subscription base model. It totally makes sense for them financially as a company. What I don't understand is why they chose the price they chose. They had an INSANELY affordable product, well worth the money and more. Now, they want about that same price PER year. It's a steep jump (almost triple, everything considered). I guess I originally expected $25 - $35/year. Which seems much more reasonable and I don't think it would have scared away so many customers. Not to mention, if I were a new customer, $50/year when I'm trying to cut back and save seems like a total NO on even trying.

2. Currency exchange. I don't pay $50, I pay $60+ dollars depending on the exchange rate. Right now, our dollar is so low that I would be paying ~$66.60. So, right there is a lack of consistency from year to year.

3. Web based model, ONLY. Now I can't access my budget if I don't have the internet? Now all my info is out there on the internets? Those 2 things don't sit right with me. But, I do think this is something I can get over because I'm already using dropbox.

Those are some of the things I'm struggling with. This morning I was a super no about it, but now I'm not sure. Maybe? Maybe after YNAB4 is no longer compatible with my computer software? Can I create an excel spreadsheet that satisfies me like YNAB does? I dunno. Ugh.

@gotkimchi: I did. Totally bummed out. I will use 4 until it craps out and then I don't know what I will do. Honestly, YNAB changed my way of budgeting, to the point where $50/year is not worth it and I will find a cheaper alternative, even if it isn't as nice as YNAB.

Did anyone see that the new version is going to be subscription based. $50/year. I'll keep using the old one or find something else - I can't see $50/year for something I could do on paper, especially now that I have a good feel for what I'm doing

Thanks for all the help! I think I've got an ok system going and I'm really try to stick to it. In the past I didn't get it set up just right (was still learning) and hopefully this time I can make it work.

@T.H.O.U.: i think you sorted it out, but the categories are for allocating money and you don't enter anything as a transaction unless money is spent, or in the case of paying off a credit card bill, i transfer from one account to the other as a transaction.

in terms of talking about a buffer, are you actually planning on using that money for christmas spending? i would try as hard as i could to have categories that carry over, like christmas, so it's earmarked for that and then other savings for what i need to save for. so what i do is figure out how much i want to spend on christmas stuff and then split the difference over the months i have left until i am actually spending on that. i do take from that category budget if needed for overspending, but i want to be somewhat realistic about it so i'm not just constantly blowing another category and then ending up with nothing in my christmas category come december.

@2farmmoms: i totally agree with what @TemperanceBrennan: said about nothing feeling guilty, especially in regard to clothes or "extras" for me once i have assigned my money a job. instead of a huge pot of money, i have little pots that are set aside for clothing or eating out and then there's less to argue about, at least for DH and i.

@My Only Sunshine: So "step 4" on YNAB lets me dip into that "buffer" account which I have named christmas savings. Is there a way to deduct my overages from that buffer? I can't subtract from that buffer amount in Sept. because then it says I have money to budget but I've also overspent.

- Nevermind, I figured it out. I "budgeted" a Negative amount in the following month (month 2/October) so that I'm back to 0 to budget.

@T.H.O.U.: If I overspend in one category, I reallocate the money from other categories during that same month. So if I budgeted $100 for kid clothes but end up spending $150 because she grows like a week, I add $50 to the kids clothes budget so I'm not in the red, and I remove that $50 from another category's budget, like eating out. Does that make sense? I do it all in the same month so I don't have any overspent in the next month.

@2farmmoms: Using YNAB can actually makes you feel less guilty about spending money. If you stick your head in the sand and refuse to take a look at where your money is going, you will feel guilty about *every* purchase. When you use the mindset that goes along with YNAB, you can spend the money you have in your category without feeling guilty. Try explaining this to your wife and maybe she will get on board. There have been a few blog posts on the YNAB blog that talk about getting a resistant partner on board.

Good luck!
