We went to the pediatric er with ds2 when he was 11 days old. His fever just got 100.3 one reading I took. By the time we got to the ER it was 100. We started for a few hours for monitoring. Ds1 also had a 12 hour sight fever that same day. I was glad we went and also glad we avoided all the testing.

Our 2.5 week old had a fever a couple weeks ago and we went straight to the er. She ended up coming back positive for group b strep and the only reason we fared well was because I caught it almost immediately. I would go in to be sure, my ped said if we had waited it would have been a lot worse. She also was acting differently than she had been but I would rather err on the side of caution.

@littlejoy: this happened to us. We called in and had to take ds (per his doctor's orders) to the ER at like 1am. MIL came and stayed with dd. They had to give him precautionary abx, a spinal tap, and we were at the hospital for four days. It was really tiring but honestly we all did fine, it was a cold, and although it was inconvenient especially being baby #2 it really was ok!

When they are that young, docs don't mess around with fever. When DS1 was 8 weeks old, he got RSV. On about day 3, he had a fever (not high) and he was checked into the hospital for observation. Everything turned out ok, but my doctor erred on the side of caution since he was so little.

ETA: He definitely had symptoms before the fever. If your LO seems ok, I'm sure it's fine.

@littlejoy: DD2 was admitted to the hospital at 6 weeks for RSV. Her temp had been fluctuation in the low 99s before it got to 100.4. By the time they checked at the hospital, it was over 101. I would take her in to be safe.

ETA: she also had an ear infection along with RSV.

@littlejoy: I went through this with my LO when he was a newborn and got up to 99.9. My pediatrician told me to quit taking his temperature. He told me if it gets above 100.4 he would HAVE to admit us to the hospital. But if baby was eating well and acting normal, not ultra fussy or lethargic, etc that I should leave him the heck alone.

@gotkimchi: @Mrs. Deer: I took her temp because she felt warm to me. 99.7 was the highest it got. I also checked because DH is borderline fever. :(

Our 3 week old had a high fever so we had to take him to the ER. They do a lot of tests to make sure it's nothing serious. I nursed him through the blood draws but had to step out when they did a spinal tap. They had a binky dipped in sugar water, which did seem to help. After tests he just got fluid and antibiotics and one type of antiviral in case all by iv All his tests were negative but it took over a day to come back (we got there on the weekend). DH and I just took turns sleeping and the other one held him. We were in the hospital a bit over 2 days and then they sent him home saying it was just a virus that had to run its course. Luckily his fever was on its way down at that point too.

I hope your LO fever goes down and you don't have to go to the hospital, just wanted to let you know what goes on in case you do.

Any reason to be taking his temp? Acting sick? Our body temp can fluctuate a lot through the day. Our office says 100.4 and above is a true fever. If he hits that just head straight to the ER. They're usually just fine but it's a good precautionary measure when they're this young.

Is there a reason you're taking his temp? Like is he acting sick etc? Temps are always the highest at the end of the day so I'm not suprised it's rising, but is be more concerned with the reasons why your taking it - is how's he's acting

I think they will say to get in to the doctor asap. They don't mess around with infant fevers! Seems pretty low so I'm sure it's just a virus but best to get monitored. Hugs .. fevers always scare me!

@littlejoy: our 2 month old had a slight fever. We took him to urgent care and they basically turned us away and told us to go to the emergency room. I think since they're so little if something is wrong it can go badly so quickly so they want to take precautions.

With that said my mil works at our dr office and went in the back to talk to a dr. He gave us the baby dosing guidelines and said if he had a fever the next day to schedule an appointment, so we never actually went to the emergency room.

Our 5 week old has been teetering between 99.2-99.7 all day (according to a rectal thermometer). My husband just took his temp, and he's 100.2. I'm freaking out!!

I'm putting a call into the doc, but I'm just curious what I should expect if LO's temp goes over 100.3. I'm trying to stay off Google, because I hopped on earlier to peek and it scared me.

ETA: my husband took his own temp. Baby girl's temp is still in the 99° range.
