@scg00387: thanks friend! I do remember talking about this with you...today has been a complete sh*tshow and he is actually on his 2nd nap now, but next time we do a 1 early nap day, he will be in bed early for sure!

@hilsy85: I think I've already yammered at you, but I would definitely do earlier bed. When we were in that (awful) transition, he would only take 1 1 hour nap but we had him in bed by 6. It took 3 weeks until it felt like he was "good" on one nap and it got longer to about 2 hours.

We had the same issue! DD showed signs around 18 months but at last we went back to 2 naps because she just wasn't getting enough rest. She showed signs again at 22 months (super late) and transition went much smoother. It took less than a week to get to the new schedule once she was really ready.

@hilsy85: I sympathize, totally! I did the nap transition with no issues and then she got sick + teething and it was the week of misery. Hang in there!!

@Andrea: thanks! It's been about a week now since he was sick, so I am hopeful that he returns to normal soon :( I felt like we were kind of on a good track and things lately have just been so crappy.

I was just going to ask if he was sick! I see that he is so that explains it. This exact thing happened to us. Don't worry, he'll get back on track and be able to stay up longer once his illness goes away. While he's sick, I would just go with the earlier nap versus trying to keep him up until 11:30.

@Sammyfab: we will be traveling to Israel in two weeks, which I'm sure will completely mess us up anyway, so I don't even know if it's worth it to fight this really hard right now. I think I do need to start doing earlier bedtimes,,,I've been trying to push him to 645, bc I'm afraid if I do 6 he'll be up at like 530, but even if that's the case, I guess I just need to do it. It'll be worth it if he's less miserable during the day.

@mrskc: yup, we also try to get out of the house, but even if we're doing something fun that he loves (like going to a gym class), he will just lie down on the floor and whine because he's so tired. I think maybe he's starting to work on his molars? which isn't helping.

Thanks for all the advice! I think I may try doing a later morning nap (like 10/1030) rather than push him to 11/1130, and then try to get in a cat nap at 3 or so if he really needs it...because right now our mornings are pretty awful!

@hilsy85: I'm sure him being sick isn't helping! DS has been on one nap for awhile but he's sick and is taking a morning nap the last few days but he is also taking an afternoon nap. The 1.5 hour nap does suck!

I was going to suggest a mid morning cat nap too (like 30 minutes). Sometimes DS does get tired mid morning but I just have to keep him busy. We usually go out and do something every morning around 10 am which keeps him occupied until we get home around noon. Sometimes he's too tired for lunch and I just put him down for a nap and he gets a late lunch.

Hmm...I'm sure the illness plays a part. Eventually things will even out. We actually transitioned then traveled a week later. We went 2 time zones west and dealt with EWUs and short naps while also staying in a hotel room and house hunting. It will get better!! After a few days his nights got much longer (12-13) and naps were only 1-1.5...sometimes 2+ though. I think it's a misconception that the 2 naps will consolidate into one giant nap. I do think night and nap sleep distribution constantly fluctuates.

My best advice would be to minimize overtiredness and do early bedtimes for now (and maybe deal with slightly early wake ups) until he can handle a longer waketime in the morning so his nap falls midday. Good luck!

@Sammyfab: he WAS sleeping 12-13 hours (with one resettling at around 530 or so). So that, plus the 1.5 hour nap was probably enough for him, although the timing wasn't great. The last few days he's been sick and recovering and has been doing 11-12...and is obviously still tired when he wakes up in the morning (which has been between 5 and 6!) and after his nap. It's just really frustrating because he was taking two 1 hour 15 min naps, and now he's taking one 1.5 hour nap?! I

Aww...I was hoping this would go smoothly for you!

How long is he sleeping at night?

A 1.5hr isn't bad...it just really sucks if it starts before noon and he refuses to take a 2nd nap. My LO often took 1h15 naps at the beginning of the transition (and truthfully, we never got consistent magical unicorn 3-hr naps either).

You could either try the mini-catnap in the mid-morning or just keep him busy and constantly entertained so he catches a 2nd wind. Ideally he would have a minimum of 5 hours before his nap then 5 hours after.

@NovBaby1112: we actually tried this today (inadvertently). He fell asleep in teh stroller at 1030 for 15 minutes, and then went down for a nap at 12pm, so we'll see what happens!

@Mrs Green Grass: yeah the length of the nap is a whole other issue...1.5 hours doesn't seem long enough to me, so not only is he waking up too early, he's also still probably tired!

@hilsy85: Ah...I can't imagine dealing with the weather! I'm sure that's part of the problem too. Maybe try a bath or other bedtime like activity before the nap to start it later and maybe trick him into sleeping longer?

I'm sorry mama!! :( My only advice was going to be try to take him for a walk in the stroller or car for a quick nap in the PM, but I know how crazy snowy and frigid it has been. The only other thing you could try is to maybe let him nap for around 30 minutes at 9am if he is exhausted and cranky, then he SHOULD still be tired enough for an afternoon nap.

@Mrs Green Grass: I'd ideally get it to noon or 1230 as well but that seems like it will never happen....

he does sleep in the stroller but it has been absolutely frigid and insanely snowy here, so it's been pretty tough to get outside :(

I have to give D an early nap every once in awhile. I guess I'd suggest slowly pushing the one nap back. So when he starts to get tired, wait another 15 minutes or so. One nap around noon seems to be the most common. We started with naps around 11 and eventually it's 12 or 12:30.

Do walks help him sleep? Maybe you can do a long walk in place of the afternoon nap so he's resting?

We went back and forth from 2 naps to 1, 3 times before it finally stuck. The transition has taken us 3 months but I think we're finally getting settled. It's been so hard. I don't have much advice but hang in there!!

About 3 weeks ago, LO started refusing his 2nd nap, so we figured it was time to switch to 1 nap. It went ok the first few weeks...he was waking at 7am, napping from 11-1230, and then going to bed around 630. I thought it would continue to get better and he would move his nap later. However, this week has been AWFUL. He has been waking up early and getting tired by 9am, but will only nap 1.5 hours, and then refuses a 2nd nap.

I have no idea what to do--he is miserable and cranky because he is tired, and that's making it tough for me to schedule meal times, because he doesn't eat well when he's exhausted. Any ideas?
