We had an arm draw, but it wasn't as horrible as I expected. The person drawing blood sucked and dug around in LO's arm to hit a vein. But, I think LO hated being held down more than actually being stuck. The whole appointment took less than 5 minutes, and LO was over it as soon as we were back in the car :).

We had an arm draw done for LO at 1 to test for the typical 1 year stuff plus allergies. I would recommend going to a reputable place like a children's hospital if possible.

I haven't heard of that - they did a heel prick for DD. Sorry you have to do that :-( Can you ask them to do the heel prick instead?

That's really interesting - I'd never heard of standard blood draws for babies until my nephew had one at 9 months. So far as I know, we don't do them here in Australia without sufficient justification (ie medical concerns or significant risk factors). LO has never had one (she's 12.5 months) and none of our GPs, nor any of my other mummy friends have ever mentioned it. She doesn't show any signs of being anemic (so her iron levels are probably fine) and we don't have any lead paint in our place, so a blood test would strike me as being highly unnecessary.

I don't know, if it were mentioned to me as just a standard precaution without any real reason, I'd probably decline.

J had his arm draw at 1 year. It sucked. He cried and he had never cried for shots ever. I will say he was totally fine afterwards, just a little whimper, I gave him his lovey and he was laughing when I bounced him down the stairs on the way out. My face was covered in tears and mascara.
I know they test iron and lead here. And they did fill a few tiny vials while we were there, more than a finger prick would give. Not sure if you "have to" though.

We had to do this specifically for lead which is so ridiculous since we live in a new build. There is NO CHANCE she would have been nomming on lead paint in a house build in 2012. They did an arm draw, with one tech who specialized in draws from babies - so at least they hit her vein the first try, thankfully!

The worst for her was being restrained for the shot; she was more upset about that than the blood draw itself. Still.... :(

@zippylef: @chopsuey119: is it totally ridiculous that I'm considering finding a ped that'll do a prick instead? Kidding.. Kind of.. Lol.

We have done a number of arm draws. When he was really small, I would wrap him up in a blanket except for the arm I want out. It makes it easier to fight with. I also nursed him when I could. Otherwise I would give him a dum dum sucker.

He had a blood draw just a few weeks ago and was an absolute champ with no tears or anything.

I think they did either a finger or toe prick at 1 yo. I don't know why some peds torture babies with arm draws!

They did Cs and she was a champ. They had me sit with her in my lap and they just pricked her finger and squeezed little drops into a vial.

I think I might have cried if they did the arm draw.

Oh man :( I had to take LO for blood work when he was barely two months. So much screaming :( it probably hurt me more than him though! I stuck my boob in his mouth to calm him down and he was fine a short time later.

Bring along a lovey? She will cry no matter what unfortunately :(

My pediatrician told me at dd's 9 month visit that we would get a lab slip for blood work at her 12 month appt. they're checking iron and lead.

She said that they do the arm draw because heel/finger can indicate levels higher than there really are, in which case they'd have to do an arm draw anyway.

Um - I am having an anxiety attack! I can barely handle her shots.

Did you have to deal with this? Tips? I don't recall having any blood work as a child, really - definitely not at ages 1, 2, 3 and 5!
