@Foodnerd81: This is the one we have! http://amzn.com/B002970M1E

It pops up in seconds, and it folds back up into a small circle. So easy to pack! It has good sun protection, too.

I live close to the beach and I'm sort of anti-beach toy, to be honest. Our entire collection, minus a few balls, is plastic stuff we've been handed by ladies who walk along the beach and sometimes pick up stuff that's been left behind. We have a significant stash now. :(

My preference is to pick up stuff on the beach that you can leave there. Seashells and sticks and seeds all make fun toys, and they're novel for kids who don't get to the beach often. I do like to bring a ball that has a little weight to it (so it doesn't blow away in the breeze) for the little ones to roll around.

I also like to bring an old flat sheet or a tablecloth to sit on/spread under the umbrella. The sand shakes off of those easily, they're big, and lightweight. The only trick is getting them to stay down if it's windy. I usually use shoes as anchors.

The other thing we've done that was a huge hit was to bring a big plastic bucket with handles and fill it with sea water to make a little "pool." The free version of that (also a hit) is for Mom or Dad to dig a pool in the sand by the waterline and let the waves fill it up. The latter requires some maintenance and is a good upper-body workout. ;)

An extra towel for her to sit on.
A wide hat.
For long sun exposure, I like a rash guard + swim diaper rather than a bathing suit.
Sunglasses.

For food, make sure you have plenty of water. Around that age, DD really liked small pieces of broccoli, peas, any type of fruit (bananas and cut up grapes are are super easy to pack), Annie's cheese and graham bunny crackers, Cheerios, black beans.

@looch: hats are hit or miss- any recommendations for one that is harder to pull off? We have one with a Velcro strap that comes undone so easily. The other two don't have any straps but I'm think of sewing ties into one.

@grizz: do you have a link to it? I have seen the Coleman one raved about but I would rather just go cheap for now. @Mamaof2: good idea with the water buckets!

Pop up tent! Best money I ever spent for the beach. Kept him out of the sun, and gave him a place to hang out.

We got a cheap pup tent - perfect amount of space and shade for him to be content crawling around in! He HATED the sand, so it was really helpful.

@Mamaof2: great suggestion!

As for food, we stopped by trader joe's and picked up freeze dried mangoes for him to snack on. He loves it and isn't too messy. Baby Goldfish is another fave for him. Bring a cup of water for her to drink also. Being out in the sun makes them hot and thirsty!

@Foodnerd81: Assuming she likes the water I would fill up several buckets of water and place them by the sun tent - that way she will be in the shade but happily playing.

We are going to be spending some time on the beach this weekend at C's great grandmothers, plus we live walking distance to a tiny beach and hope to make use of it this summer. Wondering what the essentials are for a baby who is crawling, probably walking a little by the end of the summer.

We would be doing short trips, so I'm not worried about her napping in the beach, but do want to try and keep her shades as much as possible. I don't think she will be very content to stay in one place, like under a small umbrella, but possibly we could keep her interested with enough beach toys.

What makes short trips to the beach easier for you with LOs this age? Also, what foods have you found are easy to feed them on the beach? She makes a huge mess with pouches but is good with finger foods like cubed chicken and cheese so we will prob do that and mum mums I guess?

(I'm sure this has been asked before. Feel free to point me to the right thread!)
