My son is 16 months and sometimes hits in situations when he is frustrated: himself or us. What's working right now is just redirecting him in some way. Telling him to clap his hands instead or give me five has worked pretty well.

@ShootingStar: Thanks for the response. I guess this is a normal thing and it will hopefully phase out if we are consistent. Boo!

We had a hitting phase at a little over a year too. We repeatedly told him "gentle hands" and demonstrated and if he full on hit we did time outs. I started out putting him in the corner and sitting there with him. Then I'd ask him if he was sorry. If he said yes I'd give him a hug and reiterate that we use gentle hands, no hitting. It took a while but now at 22m we seldom have hitting episodes. But when we do (either us or the dog) it's an immediate time out.

My daughter is almost 13 months and we are struggling with her hitting. She generally does this when being held and either wants something you aren't getting for her or wants down. She was fairly young when she started this behavior and I used to just take her hands and gently touch my face and tell her we don't hit we use gentle hands. This approach did not seem to be help (and sometimes even resulted in her hitting again) so I have started putting her down and telling her hitting is not nice and she can play alone for awhile which normally leads to an epic meltdown.
Do you have any other suggestions? Is this normal? She is often so cuddly but when she does this she scowls and everything and just seems so mean. I am hoping this is just a phase but this behavior has been around for some time. :bummed:
