I'd probably do roasted or rotisserie chicken, cooked peas, and fruit. Plus maybe cheese and crackers. But my kid likes really simple food.

@looch: Do the quiche freeze and reheat well? I'm always looking for things I can make in muffin tins and freeze for quick meals.

Sorry to thread jack, @regberadaisy:! :silly:

Pasta salad is a hit for DS (a few days younger than your DD). I typically use wagon wheels or ditalini for him - add roasted veggies of choice (zucchini and cherry tomatoes are great right now), cheese of choice (DS loves goat cheese but shaved parm would be good too), chopped artichoke hearts, and dressing of your choice (I use a red wine vinaigrette but any Italian or balsamic - homemade or store bought - works great). We brought this to a cookout and then DS ate the leftovers for a few days!

Ribs, potato salad, corn on the cob, and watermelon would make everyone in my family happy.
I think a cake smash at the park is a good idea!

My go-to for LO is pasta salad with a side of cut up berries. I'll also pack cheese sticks and some crackers etc just in case he wants a little something else. Happy Birthday to your little girl!!

Quiche, baked in a muffin tin, either with crust or without. It's a picnic staple I bring for adults and it works great for kids as well. I also like shredded zucchini fritters or mini zucchini meatballs. You could put them on a skewer for the adults, alternating with grape tomatoes and mozzarella balls.

Another idea is to do a cornbread/ground beef cup. I do this in a large baking pan, but it would work well in muffin tins too. I brown ground beef, season it with enchilada spices and tomato sauce. Then I spoon that into the pan. I mix up some cornbread with a can of corn kernels and then put that on top. You could put it the other way for the muffins, I think that would work better for portability. Then bake.

I've been meaning to try Rachel Khoo's savory picnic cake, you can sub in favorite flavors easily.

Oh, and one other thing, I've recently tried Vietnamese savory pancakes, those would be fantastic too. I couldn't find rice flour in the grocery store yesterday, but they're on my list of things to try.

We just took DS out today and packed his lunch in a cooler bag. I made a small tub of mini wagon wheel pasta and tiny homemade meatballs (no sauce) that he ate cold and a tub of mixed fruit (pear pieces, bites of watermelon, raspberries). And a straw cup of milk. And his usual snack catcher with Cheerios and raisins. I meant to cook a little zucchini but I forgot. We also shared some cheese and crackers and some bottled water. I dunno about cake smash - DS had a few bites of my cake and it was still messy!! In the past we've done little potstickers cut in half, tortellini cut in half, halved grapes, blueberries, bites of cold quesadilla, shreds of rotisserie chicken, and soft cooked veggies that still hold their shape like carrots or canned green beans or steamed broccoli pieces.

We like to grill chicken breasts and veggie kebabs and then take them cold. Sometimes we take a dip like barbecue sauce or tzatziki. At one DS ate the chicken shredded and liked most veggies except for ones with skin that was hard to chew like bell pepper. Take some rolls or a baguette and watermelon and you've got a whole meal. I think cake at the park is a great idea! Just bring a lot of wipes and fresh clothes.

My on the go meal since that age has been cheese sticks (c prefers cheddar sticks to string cheese) and pouches. Not the most inventive but she gets some veggies, is full, and it's not too messy.

I think doing the cake smash there could be fun. Just bring extra paper towels and wipes and a clean outfit for the ride home.

What are some good ideas for picnic food that are 1 year old friendly? We're going to celebrate her birthDAY by going to the park for a early picnic dinner. She's been self feeding since about 6.5 months? We don't give deli meat or junk / unhealthy foods yet like fried chicken or pizza. Or shellfish. Everything else is fair game. Am I crazy to do the cake smash at the park or should we do cake when we get home?

Thanks!
