My 4yo started doing this around that same age and we've tried everything to get him to sleep in and nothing works. Once he became verbal though we started using the okay to wake clock and while he still wakes by 6am at the latest I think it's actually trained him to sleep like 20/30 minutes later!!all last summer he was waking at 4/4:30.

For my LO, earlier waking always meant that she was napping too long. She's a fairly low sleep needs kid and wasn't a great sleeper, but there was always a correlation with early wakeups and getting too much sleep during the day. Maybe consider nap length?

@nugget16 my son just turned 2 (we sleep trained him at 17 months), he goes to bed very early (7pm-7:15 at the latest) and his wake time varies quite a bit. He definitely has phases of early wakings (5:15-5:30am) but I find they usually stop after a week or two on their own. The last 2 weeks, he moved up to a new classroom in daycare and I think there was a lot of stress/separation anxiety. He began waking up at 5:30 am or earlier every day crying for me. This week is week #3 in the new room, he's much happier and he is back to sleeping to 6:30-6:45.

@Alba4: good to hear it's pretty common. She's content to talk and play in her crib and not be unhappy so I guess I'll take that as a benefit. I just can't sleep if I hear her LOL. She still takes two naps today and while they're not extremely long naps, I'm going to go with the flow that she knows what she needs. When she is awake, she's a very happy and content baby. She is very schedule oriented , like me, and will let me know when she is ready to nap or go to bed.
Maybe be it's a phase???

@looch: I've heard that suggestion about waking them and I'm like you--not going to risk it! While she's a great sleeper, she isn't one who can be woken and then fall back asleep--hence why I am such a stickler for my nap schedules and do EVERYTHING I can to ensure we are home close to her nap time so she doesn't cat nap in the car and then fight her actual nap! She requires sleep (like her dad) so I just need to roll with it 😊 Maybe it's just a phase!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: thanks for the rug compliment!!! New house, new decor :)

I do feed her a hefty dinner between 5:30-6 and she's really good at stopping when she's full (ex-starts playing with food or dropping it on the floor 🤦🏼‍♀️)

She doesn't get milk before bed mostly bc she's never showed any interest in it and her pediatrician said that she'd rather her only have water anyways.

Perhaps this is a phase but if not, I'll keep doing what I'm doing. Thankfully she wakes happy and seems content to just talk and play in her crib. I just can't sleep if I hear her lol

I don't have much advice for you, just know that this is typical. Our 14 month old usually wakes up @ 5:30. His bedtime is 7:30/7:45 and he takes one nap (at daycare naps last 1.5 hours and at home he naps 3 hours). He's been waking at 5 and even at 4:30 this morning.

Since I'm a teacher, I've conditioned my kids to wake up early, but they are great nappers. My 4 year old still naps.

Everyone recommends putting them to sleep full and earlier if you can. Since my babe is a second child, I'm psyched if I can get him to bed by 7:30!

My son did the early morning wakeups at that age. I remember waking up with him at 5 am because literally nothing I tried would get him to extend his sleep cycle. Then I did a little research and tried a few things, with mixed results.

One thing I did read but never actually tried was the idea that you disrupt their sleep cycle about an hour or so before they are waking up, so that they fall back asleep and restart their sleep cycle, thus extending it. It seemed really counterintuitive to me, to go in there and wake my son up even earlier in an effort to get him to sleep later, but sometimes, with baby sleep, that's how it goes.

I did also have some success in putting him to bed earlier in the evenings, as the common convention is that sleep begets sleep. I was also very militant about his daytime naps, and closely adhered to the rules around number of waking hours between naps. At a year, my son was still taking 2 long naps a day, which I manually extended by intervening and helping him to sleep. On those days, we'd have longer stretches at night.

Very cute baby! Love your rug too. I just bought an orange and taupe rug for my great room. Yours and mine would look good together.

Our LO goes into his crib about 45-60 min later than your LO, but has to wake up around 5:25 am. He sometimes wakes up and it's usually when he doesn't eat all of his dinner, which he eats about 6:30 pm. The wakes up could be at 2:30 am like last night or 4:45 am Friday morning. He will go back to sleep with a little comfort before 4 am, but after 4 am he wants his morning milk. Some wakings we let him CIO.

To prevent the wakings we send him to bed full. Our pediatrician told us to cut out the bedtime milk, so instead I give him a small piece of whole wheat bread as part of his bedtime routine. I cut the slice in four and he usually eats a couple bites maybe half of it.

My daughter has always been a great night time sleeper--no sleep training needed and has been sstn since 2 months. She has always had/needed an earlier bedtime. She still takes 2 naps a day (usually about 1-1.5 hrs each, last one ending around 3:30). We typically start her bedtime routine around 6:45 and she's in her crib by 7/7:15. Some nights she will roll around, babble, sing and not fall asleep for 15 minutes or so but she always seems very ready for bed. I'm ok with all of this! However, for the last 2 weeks, she's been waking up around 5:15 am!!! We can usually give a paci and she may fall back asleep or rest until 5:45/6. I don't expect her to sleep past 6 (in fact I need her up by then during the week) but how can we overcome the early waking?? Until this started, she slept until 6/6:15. Is bedtime too early?? There have been nights that if we've been out, she's powered through to a later bedtime but she still wakes early. I'm the same way!!! Thanks!! Pic for pure cuteness reasons!!!
