If your home button (or sleep/wake one too) stop working, you can go to Settings -> General -> Accessibility. Scroll down to “AssistiveTouch” option and set to ON. It puts a transparent dot thing on your screen that allows you to use your phone almost entirely without the home/power buttons. I wish I didn't have to know about this... =/

Oh and you can clear what apps are currently running (and wasting battery/memory) by doing the home screen double tap like Mr Bee said, and then hold one of those apps that shows. Hit the red "-" to stop them from constantly running. If an app is messing up on me sometimes I Just have to clear it here and then it reopens fresh for me. It's also good to do often if you don't turn your phone off ever.

Oh and when you see an item on your lock screen (the notifications) you can swipe it to open the phone right to that item, instead of the home screen. So if you wake up and have 4 facebook notifications and a text message, and you really want to read the text, you can swipe the text left to right instead of the ""slide to unlock" bar, put in your passcode if necessary, and it will open right to that text. The only thing it doesn't work on that I've found are picture message notifications.

If someone is calling you, you can reply with a message. Go to settings --> phone --> reply with message. You can pre-set them. I have "can I call you later?" "I'm on my way" and "What's up" Then when someone is calling you will see a little phone thing at the bottom (i think it's "options"- you swipe it up to open- and then you choose "reply with message") Good when you're in a meeting.

Something else you can "slide up" - when the phone is locked you can slide up the camera icon on the bottom to take pictures quickly. You can view the ones you took but have to unlock the phone to get into anything else. This is great when you have to take a photo quickly!

@Lindsay05: Ah yah, that's exactly what I would do... the button wouldn't be responsive so I would start jamming it as hard as I could. Apparently I wore out the pad under it or something. Must be because I am so incredibly strong.

@mrbee: well when it does start to act up I push it SO hard thinking that will make it work lol. It seems to randomly stop working after some charges. Must be a software issue. Oh well almost time for an upgrade anyways!

@Lindsay05: My home button used to give me tons of problems! Then I did some research online and realized I was pressing it too hard... when I got a replacement, I started pressing it really gently and it's been so much better!

Although in your case, if a force-quit is fixing it... maybe it's the software and not the hardware.

You can take a picture of your current screen by pressing the sleep/wake button and home button at the same time. I just learnt this and always wondered how everyone did this!

If your home button sometimes is a bugger to push try going to one of the default apps (stocks, calendar, etc) and hold down the sleep/wake button till the power off slider appears but dont't turn it off. Just hold down the home button until the screen goes back to normal. If that doesnt help, turn the phone upside down and give it a good knock with your knuckle over the home button.

Here are a few tricks that I use all the time:

1) When you've scrolled way down on the page in Safari or Instagram, you can instantly pop up back to the top by touching the very top of the interface. A huge time saver!

2) It's such a pain to type in numbers sometimes. You have to hit the 123 button, touch the number, and then touch the ABC button to start typing letters again. If you only have to write one number, hold down the 123 button and then slide your finger to the number you want. Let go, and the number appears and you're back in ABC/typing mode!

3) Use a double space and the iPhone will automatically drop a period there for you!

4) I used to hate typing out acronyms cuz I'd have to keep hitting the shift button. But if you double-tap shift, it becomes caps lock! Awesome...

5) If you want your phone to stop ringing, hit the button at the top (the "sleep/wake" button). If you want to send the call straight to voicemail, hit the button twice!

6) If you want to access your most recent apps, double click your Home button. You can scroll through recent apps... it's a great way to see what damage the kids might've done when they get ahold of my phone!

7) If you double click your home button and swipe to the left, you can lock or unlock your phone's orientation with a single click.

8. If you're in a app that's hanging and you want to crash out, hold down the sleep/wake button until the slider appears to shut down the iPhone. But instead of choosing an option, hold down the Home button for a few seconds... the app will crash out! Can save you a reboot of the phone, if you're lazy like me.

9. AutoCorrect is always screwing up the names in my family! "Olive" kept becoming "I love"... so I finally added it as a shortcut under the Keyboard option in my Settings app. Phew, problem solved!
http://gigaom.com/2011/10/14/ios-5-how-to-add-words-to-the-auto-correct-dictionary/

10 Bee taught this to me this weekend and it's my favorite trick. If you're taking a picture with the Camera app, you can use the top volume control to take the picture! It has made my pictures much less shaky, since I can hold the phone with two hands rather than have to use one finger to touch the camera icon on the touchscreen!!

Do you use any of these tips and tricks? Have any others to share?
