@twodoghouse: yesss do. :) She is IN bed at 8(ish). Bedtime routine starts at 7:30. So 3.5 hours of awake time. For a long time Fiona was really incapable of staying awake at night. Her awake time in the evening was only 1.5 hours even when we got to 3 naps (so her last nap was usually from 5 or 5:30 until 6:30) and she would be yawning after 30 min! But then she started fighting that nap so I moved her 2nd nap later and within 2 days she adjusted and seems to do great with 3.5-4 (sometimes 4.5 if she wakes early) hours of awake time at night. Overtired doesn't really seem to be a problem for her anymore though. When she was younger, if we missed that sweet spot she'd get overtired and just cry and cry. Now the more tired she is, the faster she sleeps (although if she gets too tired she is a cranky mess to deal with until you get her into bed so it isn't exactly fun to deal with her... haha)

@Mae: I woke Blake up this morning and it was so sad! I was like dude if you were an only child I'd let you sleep all day. Talk to your sister about this. If you wake her from last nap at 4:30 what time does she go to bed? A and B have been sleeping till 4:15, 4:30ish and their usual bedtime is before 7. Yeah that's not working anymore. I'm fine with pushing bedtime back, but I'm having a hard time finding that sweet spot of how much awake time after nap before getting overtired. Also I have a funny video of Blake being woken up from his nap a couple days ago. I'll message it to you on Facebook!

@twodoghouse: maybe! I missed that thread. Her night sleep never really seems affected either way, once she's asleep. The only issue is her fighting sleep at bed time if I let her sleep later than 4:30 in the afternoon! Maybe I should just try to stick it out with this forced schedule another week or two and see if things resolve themselves before making any more schedule shifts. I just feel crazy every morning waking her up. Especially because I really like sleeping in :) Also because I just feel bad. She always gives me this groggy look like... whyyyyyyyy. lol

I wonder if this is just a weird time of flux for our LOs? I think someone posted yesterday about their 10 month old wanting to go down to one nap and several others said it seemed like that around this age but then their LOs needed to go back to two naps for a lot longer. Maybe it's all the development they're going through or something? I don't think my kids are really ready for one nap day in and day out, but their sleep is so much better at night now that I think they do need less napping during the day one way or another. I've been working on waking them up from naps and man, that sucks! But it does help bedtime!

Also, it's really hard for me to play each day by ear because there are two and its hard to catch their sleepy cues and everyone ends up cranky if I let them lead too much. So I totally get the need for the schedule!

@Mamasig: LO seems to suck at giving me clear tired signals (or maybe I suck at reading them lol). Like usually her first awake time is 2.5 hours. But this morning she got super cranky and kept rubbing her eyes (usual tired signals) right before 2 hours so I put her down at the 2 hr mark. Took her 35 minutes to fall asleep! (usually takes her less than 5). So I feel like just guessing day by day what she needs is a recipe for disaster.

I know this isn't helpful, but some days she may just need one nap and other days two. DS2 has been doing that lately.

@illumina: She's always been a pretty good night sleeper. I noticed when we went from 3 to 2 naps that she did fall asleep a bit faster. Used to take her 10-20 minutes sometimes (not unhappily, just flopping around trying to get comfortable) but now more often then not she is asleep before I can even get to our room to grab the monitor. I haven't noticed any change at all in her overnight sleep otherwise (she did before and still does wake up several times/night but generally just needs me to replace her pacifier and she is good to go).

@Mae: Is she sleeping a lot better at night though? I found that now S is sleeping 13+hrs a night she needs less during the day.

@illumina: see fiona has always been just the opposite. She has had HIGH sleep needs and very low awake times. She was on 4 naps until just past 6 months and 3 naps until just past 9 months! I think that is why moving to 1 nap now at 10 mo seems so bonkers to me. But I guess I may have to try it if this continues.

@Mae: Yeah, just fine. I mean there were a few weeks when we would need to be out in the mornings to try and keep her from dozing off at her old nap time...but she's always had pretty long wake times/or maybe just a tolerance for being tired! She's 18 months now and is doing a good job of fighting her only nap, ugh!

@Bubbles: Its not an either/or situation, it is both! I've been having to wake her up at 730 am AND wake her at 1115 from her first nap. bah.

@twodoghouse: also this... lol. I'm not terribly anxious for a 1 nap schedule because that means I only get one nap/break all day! Being home alone past bedtime three days a week is already really challenging and I just don't know how I'd keep her entertained for 4-5 hours at a time twice per day all by myself! DH is done with school in a month and I really thought we'd be on 2 naps at LEAST until then (really I thought much longer because she has always dropped naps late).

@illumina: wow that just seems so early to me! She did well on 1 nap though?

Also--- f-u DST! Everything was perfect before that hit. stupid stupid stupid lol.

I'd try one nap! Occasionally when my kids sleep in or just don't want to nap, we do one nap and they actually do better st bedtime/overnight that way. The only reason we don't do it regularly is the sleeping in rarely happens for both of them and a staggered schedule is really hard when I'm home alone with them. Also I need them to nap twice so I can take a shower and stuff, haha. You could try it and see what happens. She might surprise you! I've noticed when I'm trying to delay a nap and they are getting cranky a change of scenery always keeps them distracted, especially if it's outside.

I would choose to wake LO up from a nap rather than waking him in the morning - purely coz there's no way I'd mess with an 8am start to the day!

We had similar issues around that time. I had to cap the 1st nap at an hour, or less, most of the time so she could get another one in. Eventually we moved to 1 nap at 10.5 months...that way she was actually getting more sleep than on a 2 nap schedule!

So my LO has always done really well on a sleep schedule and tends to get pretty cranky without one. We recently (about a week before DST) moved her to a 2 nap schedule because she had started fighting her 3rd nap and it went really well. She was doing:

645-7: wake
9:30-11/11:15: nap 1
2:30-4/4:30: nap 2
8: in bed

All was well. Then DST happened. We got her bedtime moved up to the "new" 8pm with no issues after a few days, but her morning wake time didn't adjust. I think she wants to sleep until 8am? Or later even?

The problem is she is pretty set on her wake times now so if she sleeps until 8 then she doesn't want to nap until 1030. And then she doesn't want to wake up until too late and then her next nap is too late and then she hasn't been awake enough before bed so she won't sleep.

So we've been waking her up at 7:30 every day. And then *usually* I also have to wake her up from her first nap because she falls asleep about 10 and wants to sleep longer than an hour or so.

I've never had a problem waking her from a random long nap if it is f'ing with our schedule, but the fact that she wants to sleep in and we keep waking her up seems INSANE to me. I feel like I should be thanking my lucky stars and letting that kid sleep! But I don't know how to do that without totally f'ing up bedtime.

It seems like the only other thing I could try is just letting her sleep in and then moving her to a 1 nap schedule... but 1) that seems premature since she is only 10 mo and didn't move to a 2 nap schedule until 9mo and 2) I feel like 4-5 hours is a LONG time to keep her awake. I've had to do it occasionally when she's woken up from a nap early and it succkksss.

Is there another option I'm not thinking of? Or do I just resign myself to waking my kid up, or not waking her up and then dealing with bedtime drama?
