@red_seattle: I've needed to cut out distractions too! My husband can't even be close to us or LO just wants to sit up and smile at him!

@T-Mom: I have been singing and that's helps now. It really can be stressful, but we are working through it!

My LO had a strike around 8 mo and again a little later. He was super distracted and would cry. I barely got him to nurse while drowsy or just awakened but that's what I would recommend you. Singing to him also helped, something to get his focus on me. And i pumped if i got too full. It was so stressful and I would cry but he got over it eventually and we nursed till 13 mo. He was also enjoying solids at the time. Hang in there!!

Sounds like a nursing strike. But also, around that time, Toddler X dropped to nursing 2-4 times on any given day-- and up until that point he had been a solid 8x/day nurser, so when he dropped to 5, and a few weeks later down to 2-4, I thought "OMG! He's trying to wean and I'm not ready!" He wasn't weaning. Nursing got to be really hard around then and it took a lot of effort to get to 12 months, but it worked. Just keep offering the boob. It helped to cut down on distractions when it was time to nurse-- I couldn't nurse him in public after 10 months or so, we had to be in a room by ourselves, etc.

@Thehistoryofus: He will drink from a bottle, but I was trying to avoid pumping. Tonight he was a little weird with the bottle when we tried it after he refused nursing though. I think he was just really tired.

@runsyellowlites: Ugh... I've been afraid of nursing strikes all along. I would love to be able to nurse him to sleep to help things along, but for whatever reason my DS is not a comfort nurser and won't nurse to sleep either. He just wants his lovey and bed when he is tired. He is not much of a snuggler :( I will look into those links for some tips. Thanks! Hopefully this passes quickly.... How long do nursing strikes usually last?

@cvbee: He is teething. We have given him teething tablets which usually do the trick, but no luck tonight. Hopefully it passes quickly! And DS doesn't like to nurse when he is tired!

maybe he is teething? is he taking the bottle?

My 9 month old will pretty much only nurse if he's waking up or going to sleep.

Sounds like a pretty normal nursing strike. Kellymom has some fantastic tips on how to deal with one.

When P gets like that I'll focus on nursing to sleep and especially RIGHT when she wakes up when she's still groggy and half asleep. Those end up being some of the best nursing sessions and get us through until she decides she's ready to get back to business.

I am so sorry you are going through this. Will he drink from a bottle? I assume you want to avoid pumping though?

Maybe try limiting solids and lots of skin to skin time.

My 10 month old son has just started protesting nursing this week. It is exhausting, stressful and emotional. I don't know what to do. He's been consistently nursing 5 times a day for months now. Two days a week he is with my mom and gets 2 bottles while I am at work, but has always transitioned seamlessly from bottle to breast. Now, he just wants to play, sit up and push me away when I try to nurse him. I can't help but feel like he doesn't want me and it is just really hard. I know he still needs milk, but I don't know how to get him to focus on nursing.

Any advice for a stressed out mama???
