@Boogs: Good question... I don't know the answer to that one.

Because allergies can be life-threatening, Dr. Google won't cut it here... I will have to check with a doctor and get back to you on that one!

@brownie: ah you sound just like me with the laundry list of specialists and having to travel to shop at specific store like whole foods.

Regarding the lamb, Ifound it locally from an organic farmer by Word of mouth. I would not be able to purchase it locally. I have heard of people finding it at trader joes but we do notbhbe one here.. Turned out it being something my son could not tolerate anyway but I know many who it has worked wonders for. again just my personal experiences and I would always consult a doctor before teing something I felt needed consultation.

@looch: You are telling it like it is. And it is more to consider.

Funny enough, the pediatricians don't care about the weight. We made a stink about it and went to a pediatric gastroenterologist who was concerned. The infant nutritionist we saw says she isn't concerned and that he is a snacker probably only taking 2-3 oz every feeding but eating all the time. She watched him go to town with solids.

So, we did eventually find someone else but it is just one thing after another with our pediatrician. Like 7 weeks of a yeast infection that they swore up and down was excema. Our gastro sent us to a dermatologist and he diagnosed ti and fixed it.

Our chicken nuggets are from whole foods and are dairy, soy and gluten free. So we aren't worried about those. We haven't had too many issues with cross-contamination. I went on a strict paleo diet and he was still reacting to something. I don't think that he had the right gut flora. After formula I think that has fixed it. The cheese the other day hasn't had any effect.

I have some sick days. I am a college instructor and this is my first semester. I already feel like my schedule is super tight and I really don't want to miss it. I need to use my Fridays to nurse more. I will probably be home more in the summer and definitely next fall.

I plan to breastfeed until he is 2 because of his issues.

@anbanan15: You are amazing. I was able to do a total elimination for 2 weeks but I wasn't eating enough to keep him fed. We had problems with weight then. After that point (3 months) we just haven't been increasing well. So Dairy and Soy has been out of our diet for more than 6 months now (Yay!!) We dropped the reflux meds at 6 months because he really didn't need them (he didn't have reflux he had allergies).

Our issue, is that we live in a super small town. Literally two grocery stores none of which even carry margarine without soy. So every time we go out of town, we visit whole foods and stock up on foods we need. It is great because I know there are safe foods we can get there. So I am not sure where we could even find grass-fed lamb.

I am definitely going to look into chia. I assume I can get it at whole foods.

Good luck with your son!

I'll take the opposite position on the consistent dropping in percentiles, my ped advised us that if we had two months in a row where there wasn't a weight gain in the first year, we'd have to see a pediatric dietician. The peds here don't advise on issues wrt to food, we have a separate consulting service for that, not sure if you have options to see someone that specializes in infant eating.

I don't love my ped, BUT he's a fantastic doctor with a terrible bedside manner. If he wasn't supportive when we had an issue, I'd go to the ends of the earth to find another doctor that could give me some concrete advise and a plan, because no one on the internet, no matter how many children they have or what experience they site would be a substitute for the advice of a doctor (to me). I don't have a lot of choice where I live, but I find it hard to believe that in the US, there aren't other options for a ped.

Also, have you looked at the ingredients in the chicken nuggets? I'd be worried about the soybean oil that's involved in making those. I'd also be worried about cross contamination from other things using either soy powder or milk derived ingredients manufactured in the plants. Fast food would be the absolute last thing I would feed a child that has as severe food issues as your son, honestly.

If you're needing to breastfeed to get him to get calories, can you take some time off using the sick leave days to care for other family members to stay at home and nurse around the clock? At my old employer, we had 8 days a year to use for care related to other family members and there was a woman with an infant that had feeding issues and she used this time to nurse him up during the day for a week.

I know this post won't make me the most popular person on the boards, but I'd tell you this if you were a friend in real life, so I hope you're not offended.

@brownie: I don't have much advice for you on the weight gain issues (we have the opposite problem) but wanted to say I feel you. DS, who is also 10 months, has FPIES and literally can only eat 2 solid foods (carrots and blueberries) without reacting at this point. I've also needed to eliminate nearly everything from my diet since we are breastfeeding and am currently eating 6 foods. Wr are co-sleeping as he does not STTN and wakes every couple of hours.

It's so tough, and sometimes I wonder if I can make it passed today and onto tomorrow, but I do and realize it wasn't that bad. We do it all again, day after day.

We had DS allergy tested at 6 and 7 months. He had the blood and skin prick testing done and then patch testing which proved to be the more helpful on for us. We also had him tested for celiac (negative although he's allergic to wheat but I was GF before they tested so he hadn't been exposed in months) and ran general blood work which revealed he was anemic. We had to start him on iron supplements.

Was your son's resent percentile drop only since the dairy mishap? It can take anywhere from 2-8 weeks to work the dairy proteins out of yours and his systems, so he might still be reacting. I know for us it took a good 6 weeks when we eliminated at from my diet when DS was 2 months. Is he by chance on any reflux meds? Some of them contain trace amounts of diary. I also had to check the medications I was taking for trace dairy, soy, acacia (legume) etc.

Some great advice was given above. Have you thought about trying grass-fed lamb? I know another mama whose son was failure to thrive an his weight gain issues really turned around when lamb and lamb broth were added to his diet! @Red's suggestions for quinoa and chia were excellent. I live off these things right now and they have been nutritionally sustaining me. Quinoa is my everything, including protein right now (DS reacts to all meats). Chia takes on the flavor of whatever you our it in so your LO may not even notice if you sneak into his food. Although I would cation using too much chia since it can be used for weight loss with it's absorbing properties to help people feel full longer.

I hope that helps and feel free to ask me anything. I've found the best and most helpful advice has come from forums like this! Good luck and you are not alone!

@brownie: Seems like you're on top of things :)

One more thing though, since he's refusing his bottles, maybe give him some chia seed (gel) to make sure he gets enough calcium (chia seeds have 6X calcium as milk)? My LO loves chia seeds but I don't give her too much cause it also makes for super soft poo.

@mrbee: We just got the Cystic Fibrosis sweat test done and he was negative. This was a major concern for us as daddy has CF. Theoretically he was tested for Celiacs and that was also negative. So far, we haven't been able to identify a reason except for dairy and soy which we have been off for months and months and months.

He has finally stopped having green poo which I swear the formula refactored his gut and allowed him to fix whatever was wrong. So that is fantastic. We just haven't been able to get him to grow. 16 pounds is our magic number at this point.

Not concerned that he's in a low percentile, but definitely would be a bit concerned that his percentile is dropping over time even though he has a healthy appetite.

That's great that you tested him for celiac... have you checked for other possible biological problems like CF? That can cause weight loss even with a large appetite. Once you're able to rule out the main sources of failure to thrive, then maybe it just is that your LO isn't gaining weight but that it's nothing to really worry about!

Please note: I am not a doctor and am not giving medical advice! I just worry about Charlie's weight gain, and this is all stuff I've been Googling a bunch lately. In Charlie's case though, he just doesn't eat solids that well so I think it's just his fickle tastebuds!

@Red: We are 100% certain he is at least intolerant to dairy and soy. We are just starting to him to a point where we can start trialing things. He has had yellow poop for the last 1 1/2 weeks.

We did get him tested for celiacs. I will ask the gastro about eggs and nuts because that would help.

Our pediatrician is mostly useless so I would have to ask the gastro about other allergies and what we could offer him.

Quinoa is our go to grain. He has quinoa flakes instead of oatmeal and we just bought quinoa pasta. He gets plain quinoa too. Daycare adds quinoa to everything (today's smoothie even). I added flaxseed to the fruit smoothie for breakfast this week. So that is some fat.

I agree with @MrBee, it sounds like your LO is eating well. Just because he's in the 5th percentile doesn't really say anything other than he's smaller than other kids. Somebody's got to be in the lower percentiles, just like somebody's got to be in the super high percentiles. According to this site, your baby at 10 mos needs less than 900 calories a day (roughly 40 calories X height).
http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/toddler/feeding_your_toddler.html

BTW, I used to puree cooked quinoa (highest source of plant-based protein) and sneak it into my LO's applesauce. It tastes different but she ate it anyways.

we actually took charlie to get tested for environmental allergens around 10 months (it was like over 80 pin pricks) but charlie didn't mind it at all. we had to go an allergist though, and we didn't test for food allergies. definitely sounds like it's worth a shot!

@brownie: You can request that your doctor test your LO's blood to see if he's allergic to milk, eggs, nuts, soy, etc. They don't usually do it before 1 year because babies outgrow things so quickly but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I got my LO tested at 1 year and thank goodness I did before I gave her peanut butter cause she's severely allergic to Peanuts and other nuts (and soy, milk, garlic, wheat,...the list goes on).

@Mrs. Bee: Yes, we are concerned about his weight gain. He is in the .5 percentile and has dropped from the 50th when he was born and 20th at 3 months. He is currently just under 16 pounds and was born at 8 pounds 9 ounces. I just don't know at this point about all of that. I know he eats and isn't starving. His stool has finally turned around and looks phenomenal so I am not as worried about it. But I want the gastro to have a heads up that we aren't doing the formula now (he refuses to even drink an ounce of formula at this point).

@brownie: it sounds like he is eating a lot! is your doctor concerned about his weight gain? if he hasn't doubled his birth weight yet, he must be on the small side, but it sounds like he eats way better than charlie ever has (at 26 months).

@Mrs. Bee: Yes we have an infant scale. He doesn't eat more than 2 - 3 oz at a feeding. But I will definitely try all of that for a day.

He eats solids like they are going out of business. He will eat up to 8 oz of food at a sitting easily. The other day he ate an entire mcdonalds happy meal (4 nuggets, apple slices and apple juice). He is an eating machine. He will eat 3 or 4 of those toddler bowls (the ones they reach in and pull food out of and it is supposed to help guard against spills) of cheerios, melts or dehydrated fruit. Solids are not a problem at all.

I really want to try eggs and nuts because of the nutrient density.

@brownie: A pediatrician friend recommend that if you're concerned about a nut allergy, you can give your child peanut butter while you're waiting in the lobby of your doctor's office for your next doctor's appointment.

That way, if they have an adverse reaction then you are at the right place to get treatment!

@brownie: you can get an infant scale and weigh your baby before and after a feeding.

does he eat solids well?

@mrbee: We added olive oil to his purees and he has since refused purees. He eats avocados and guacamole when we offer it. He can't have nuts yet and we haven't tried tahini or other seeds.

We will have to try tracking. How would you track breastmilk?

Have you tried tracking daily calorie intake? That can be really revealing!

Also, what about high-calorie foods high in energy density... is that an option?

I love this forum. Everyone has been so supportive with everything. I wish I had the opportunity to help others as you have helped me!!

So we have been through so much in the last 10 months.

1 - He is intolerant to Milk and Soy which took 3 months to solve (without the help of his doctor). He accidentally had cheese this weekend (pizza that we ordered without cheese and they screwed up). So far, we haven't seen too many ill affects from it.

2 - He hasn't gained enough weight since then. He still hasn't doubled his birth weight at 10 months. I will be surprised if he doubles it by a year.

3 - We are working to increase his weight. He is refusing bottles. Formula or breastmilk he is refusing. Any ideas how to increase his intake? I have been co-sleeping and nursing 2-3 times a night to try and get more into him. He eats solids as much as absolutely possible (after nursing or a bottle is offered).

4. He isn't sleeping. At night he is up 2 or 3 times to eat because we aren't getting the liquid calories into him. His naps are currently at 20 minutes to 1 hour max two times a day. Ugh he needs to sleep more. He goes to bed at 7 pm and no fail wakes up at 6:30 am.

Any suggestions? Books? Blogs?
