Our DD did this around 12 weeks and a faster flow nipple (medium, I think) did the trick.

@SweetiePie: Ours was diagnosed by a feeding therapist, but a pediatric ENT would also be an option.

p.s. for us, the IBCLC did the initial evaluation, she used a quantitative scale with various indicators. The pediatric dentist likewise did an evaluation, again using the scale with various indicators, I attach a picture. The pediatrician and the lactation consultant at their office in contrast just quickly looked at his mouth (and said he didn't have one). We were very pleased with the entire process by the IBCLC and the dentist, we could look at the scale as well, and agree that there were issues. So we never felt like it was an unnecessary intervention.

I would get him evaluated for a tongue tie. It can effect bottle feeding as well. My son was exactly like this, not just on the breast but also when we tried to give him a bottle. We got his tongue tie clipped and it's been night and day. We went to a pediatric dentist that our IBCLC recommended, they do the evaluation for free and we had it lasered right after. He barely cried and is so much more effective at eating now a few weeks later.

I can't remember if your son also has reflux, but that can be related, as they take in more air when they can't latch effectively.

@looch: I have no experience with tongue tie but that’s something that crosses my mind this morning.

DS was a sloooow eater, both nursing and by bottle. He did have reflux and once it was treated with Prilosec it improved to some degree - more like 30 minutes instead of 45-60. But it was definitely annoying. I stopped noticing it once he could hold his own bottle which he did blessedly early. I think it’s partially personality bc even now as a 3yo he takes forever to eat - he’s a great eater, just very deliberate about it I guess?

On the flip side DD is a super fast eater (5-10 minute feedings max since she was about 2 weeks old) and that freaked me out too! She refuses a bottle so at least she’s efficient? If it’s not one thing it’s another with these kids!

My formula fed 10 week old has always had long feeds - anout an hour each time. Whether day or night. Of course as he takes more ounces it’s getting longer. He seems to play with the nipple a lot in his mouth. I would think maybe it’s developmental but he’s kind of always done it besides the barely conscious one-ounce-at-time early newborn days. It does seem to have gotten “worse” though.
He’s a very slow drinker and any time you place the nipple in his mouth it almost seems like he has trouble getting his tongue and mouth to the right position to suck. But once he does his sucking is fine.

Weight gain is great so I know he’s getting enough and it’s not like he’s NOT eating at all. So I’m not worried per se. It’s more of an....annoyance? Haha. It’s just hard that every feeding we have to set aside a full hour at least. Sometimes 1.5 hours because we have to stop and give a long break or he needs multiple breaks. My older son was never like this. He sucked the bottle down quickly - a half hour max including burping.

I guess I’m wondering how common this is, if it is outgrown, if it’s just personality, or if there might be an underlying reason? I could ask my Ped but like I said I’m not really “worried” so it doesn’t feel important enough to call. We have 2 more weeks till his next appt.
