In a certain class/education level, reading to your child is totally normal and something we do every day, but I had *many* students in kinder when I was an elementary librarian who had never had a book in their lives-no library books and no personal books.</p> <p>I worked in a 99% low income school where the student population was almost all English language learners, so I don't know if the issue was the expense of buying books, the time to get to the library when parents are working jobs with long hours, or the fact that the parents couldn't read books in English anyway and most books here are in English--or a combination of all three, but it was heartbreaking and I LOVED the 1000 books program for that reason.</p> <p>Our program gave small prizes for each level completed, so it didn't matter if a kid/parents got to 1000--the philosophy was that 10 or 100 or 500 is way better than 0. </p> <p>And it's amazing what giving away a free book bag or having an event with Clifford the Big Red Dog will do for getting parents into the library.</p> <p>ETA: oh, and we had a great bilingual/spanish kids book section because of our student population, so that was a hit, too. </p> https://boards.hellobee.com/topic/1000-books-by-kindergarten#post-1645889 Tue, 20 May 2014 06:27:21 +0000 mrs. bird 1645889@https://boards.hellobee.com/ <p>i've never heard of it, but it seems pretty reasonable. even if you started at one and then stopped at five, that gives you 208 wks and that equates to less than 5 a wk. not familiar with the program, but what happens after you've read 1,000? is there a prize or certificate or something? i'm kind of against rewarding things that i think should the norm, like reading, but if they earned a new book for reading those books that would be relevant &amp; i could get behind that. reading itself should be enjoyable &amp; shouldn't need a reward, but if it helps parents stay on top of bring new reading material into the home, that's a great thing! </p> https://boards.hellobee.com/topic/1000-books-by-kindergarten#post-1645875 Tue, 20 May 2014 06:17:00 +0000 looch 1645875@https://boards.hellobee.com/ <p>I am not in the majority, but I would not do this even if our local library offered it (I have no idea if it does or not). My LO is 3 and he's been alive well over 1000 days (and has been read to every one of those days). I feel like the regular recommendations about repetition, daily reading time, etc. might get lost in the '1000 books' headline, and I think that would be a shame. I'm willing to have my mind changed...their website seems to have decent information. Also, I'm in agreement with the comments above about some books being garbage. Being able to recognize quality is an important life skill to learn, too. ;) Still, it's an interesting idea.
