@ilovepie: Oh my gosh, yes! It's a game changer when they can be outside on their own. We got a swing set this fall because of covid, and I still remember the first day DS was outside for like 45 minutes by himself having so much fun.

Right now, since it's is winter, I am aiming for 30 mins every day. Some days we don't make it! Once it warms up we'll aim for longer days. Also, my kids just got to the age that I can send them outside by themselves. I still try to join them most of the time, but it makes it feel more manageable.

@Chuckles: yes! Some winter days we won’t go outside at all or only for 15 minutes. But some days in summer we eat all of our meals outside and play out there for hours. I could never do a specific month challenge.

@catgirl: That's a good point. It's 1000 hours over the year, but it doesn't need to be evenly distributed each month. That makes it feel more manageable if I can think that the kids will be outside much of the day throughout the summer.

@Mrs. Carrot: We were outside a ton in the spring and summer but it has been way, way less since the fall. We're only doing outside activities as well, so we're trying to embrace that! Walking every day sounds great!

@Jessiemuller88: I can't imagine how challenging that would be! I was inside a lot as a kid which is why I'm hoping this challenge helps our whole family. I need a reset.

@erinbaderin: @tinyperson: Totally fair! Getting outside for even a bit each day is great though! And I hear you on the dark early thing - sunset is just after 4 for us right now and it's pretty cold. I think the bulk of our hours will be in the summer.

I agree with @Jessiemuller88: and @erinbaderin:, we are trying to get out as much as possible, but my kids' ages make it a little tricky during the week. My 2nd grader has a break from remote learning basically exactly when my 1 year old is napping. Then they are pretty much done for the day/ready to head out by 3:30, but it gets cold and dark by 4:30. We're near Chicago, so it's pretty chilly right now, but I'm trying to encourage their nanny to get them outside in the afternoon most days. We went to the forest preserve on Saturday afternoon to walk through the snow and we all felt great after getting out.

@erinbaderin: I'm with you - same place even! We're going out for a walk after lunch every day, but we barely have time for that on weekdays. We try to get out a couple of times a day on weekends.

I love the idea, but I just don't have the bandwidth for it right now. My husband and I are both working 100% from home and our kids, 4 and 6, just started virtual school as in Ontario schools didn't go back after Christmas. It's deep winter, it gets dark at 5pm, and I know that this would stress me out, worrying that we're falling behind. I try to get some outside time in every day but I know myself and I just can't add one more thing to my plate.

I would love to do this challenge, but I have a hard time with my children’s ages right now. We love being outside, and it’s easy to be with my 4 year old DS, but I have 1 year old twins, and I feel like they limit us so much right now. When I take all 3 kiddos outside, the twins literally go in opposite directions, and I have to run back and forth making sure they don’t get hurt or eat things, while simultaneously trying to hang with my 4 year old. I love the idea of this challenge, and I hate how much we are inside right now. I’m hoping I can start it this summer, when the twins are a little bit older. It’s so exciting to see others doing this though! I was never inside as a child!

We're not doing the challenge formally but since Covid we actually have spent more time outside than ever before and I am working hard to preserve that going forward. We go for walks nearly every day, and any time I can find free time we go hiking. My daughter loves being outside and it's the only activity I feel comfortable doing in this time so we've tried to make the most of it and as things start returning to pre-pandemic norms, one of the things I'm aiming to do is keep up with regular walks and hikes by commuting less/continuing to work at home and taking regular days off during the week to hike.

@lindseykaye: my DD loves filling in the tracker too! And I agree, it’s making me think about our free time differently. Going outside was never my first go to but I’m liking the mental shift.

@Kemma: I’ll admit I’m not an outdoorsy person by nature, so it’s never been my go to. But I’m trying to be better!

@ilovepie: I’m not sure we’ll actually hit 1000 hours but I saw this on their Instagram page and I think it’s really true!

We are, although I don't think we'll actually mAke it to 1000. I'm using it as a reminder to get outside more and an incentive for my kids who aren't big on playing outside.

We are also staring this! I printed the mandala tracker and my oldest is having fun coloring in our hours. I found myself keeping outside time closer to the front of my mind and bringing basic things outside (eating, reading, working).

I am in FL so now is the time to get out and enjoy some cold-ish weather during the short time we have it! I’m hoping this helps us build habits that will carry us through getting outside in the rainy/105 degree days of summer.

Is anyone doing the 1000 hours outside challenge?
https://www.1000hoursoutside.com/

I remember reading about it a few years ago and thinking it was cool but I wasn't worried about our outside time. Back then we were easily hitting 1000 hours outside in a year. Now between covid and DD starting elementary school I feel like she is inside so much. Our family loves a challenge and likes to have an actual goal - so I printed one of the trackers and we decided to try it! I think the tracker will be a great visual for all of us.

It meant this morning we went to one of our favorite trails for 2.5 hours even though it was 25 degrees out! And this afternoon we made obstacle courses in the backyard for another 1.5 hours. We bundled up, had a blast, and I feel like we've all been happier today.

So, anyone in?
