@DesertDreams88: Thanks! Our LO is more like 3-3-3...We just go by his signals - there is always a narrow window where he is sufficiently tired but not too tired to nap...

With both kids we always did more like 2.5-3-3.5, maybe 4.

@periwinklebee: 2-3-4 refers to wake times. So,
wake up
2 hours of wake time
nap
3 hours of wake time
Nap
4 hours of wake time
Bed

For both of my kids we started with the 2-3-4 schedule, but it kind of morphed into morning nap, afternoon nap, and bedtime by 7. I could always tell when they started to get grumpy in the morning it was time for nap 1. And nap 2 was immediately after lunch. I tried to prolong bedtime until 7ish, but with my 2nd she’d be screaming through dinner and I’d take her up as early as 6 or 6:30. It was easy tell when she was just flat out exhausted.

So anyways, my advice is to go by your LO’s signals. When they’re grumpy and it’s close to either 9am, 1pm or 7pm, it’s time for sleep.

@mrsbubbletea: FWIW...I find my 7 mo dd can head to bed at her regularly scheduled 7-7:30 even if her cat nap ended at 6. It’s weird, but her little body seems to be programmed for bed then.

@Tanjowen: ok that’s almost exactly how her schedule usually goes. My sleep trainer got me a little worried about pushing bedtime to 8 saying we lose an hour overnight sleep for a 20 min nap but I feel like there is no way at this age with this sort of naps to have a set in stone bedtime!

@SweetiePie: sounds good. She was at her nanny share all day today (7-4) and since I don’t pick her up, I didn’t get to ask about her naps. Usually she takes plenty of short naps there. I just kinda pushed her a little and she made it to 630 pm bedtime without becoming a mess so we will see how she does tonight! And then tomorrow I have to drop big bro off at school at 830 so I can’t try the early nap unless I do it in the stroller and walk to school or do her nap early and bring him in late... we will see what time and in what form everyone wakes up!

@mrsbubbletea: This age is tough. With my 10 month old we do a quick catnap on poor nap days. So a bad nap day for us is:

7 am wakeup
9 am - 10 am nap
1- 2 PM nap
5-5:20 cat nap
8 PM bedtime

On a good nap day he can make it from a 3:30 PM wakeup and a bedtime of 7 PM. So it varies for us based on what he does!

@mrsbubbletea: ditto everything @LBee: said. Morning waketime should be the shortest. And it takes a lot of babies some time to get to a 2-3-4 schedule. We couldn’t get there till after 12 mo. So don’t feel like you have to do 2-3-4 exactly. It can be 1.5-2.5-3 for a while.

Today my guy woke early after a rough night (cold maybe?) he woke 6am and he was back down 7:30. Slept till 9:30.
It throws the day off a bit but clearly he needed that earlier nap.

@LBee: thanks, this is all helpful. I am definitely going to try pushing the morning nap a little earlier and see what happens!

@kayla0416: everything you are saying, it helps st least to know it’s not totally unusual! I think my baby tends to be a bit behind on nap transitions more like from her age related to due date, and then on the later side still. I kind of want to just go with the flow but then I also feel if I found the magic awake time or something it will all click :silly:

and still yesterday she woke up from her second nap at 140 and I had to figure out what to do...

@mrsbubbletea: This morning she was up at 6 AM and back down at 7:15 AM. She slept until 8:45 AM. I think the first nap needs to move-up. With both kids the first nap dictated the day for us. I also think you know your child best - extending wake times to get a longer nap never worked for us. My kids have trouble settling down into a deep sleep if they are over tired. It then translates into early morning wake-ups, etc. We try to be really strict about the 3 and 4 component of the 2-3-4 as long as she gets a good nap in there.

Also, if my kid wakes up at 5 AM, I would put her back down at 6 with the goal being to sleep until 7 and sort of restart a normal day. While I know that eventually the goal is to drop the morning nap and just have one long afternoon nap, I've found my kids can "hang" better with a crap afternoon nap than a morning nap.

We are in the same boat! My 9 month old is going between 2 and 3 naps, and has never been a good napper. Her first couple months she wouldn't nap more than 20-30 min, then for a long time it was always 40-45, and finally in the last few weeks they're occasionally 1-1.5 hours. This is our schedule:

Wake at 6:30
First nap approx 8:30-9:30/10
Second nap 1-1:45
Bedtime around 6:30

On weekdays, she'll sometimes do a catnap on the way home around 4:30, which helps her make it til bedtime, but on the weekends, she's a mess by bedtime. It would be perfect if the second nap was 1.5 hrs, but her second one is never more than 45 min. And if we move bedtime any earlier than 6:30, she thinks it's a nap and is awake after 45 minutes and tough to get back down. If we do a 3rd nap on weekends, it's at like 4:30/5, then she's up til 8, which cuts into her total night sleep and makes her overtired the next day. It's a never-ending cycle...

Like a pp mentioned, I think I'm going to try extending the second wake time a bit - I think if we could hold off that second nap til 1:30/2, it would probably be perfect.

I don't know what 2-3-4 is, but I can tell you what my 8 month old does. He has never been a great napper, oftentimes we/daycare have to let him fuss a bit to extend naps. This was his schedule today

up at 6:45
nap: 10:05-11:20
nap: 2:40-3:57
bed: 7:30

Most days are close to this. The afternoon nap was a bit short-ish and he was cranky by 7:30. On some days he takes a quite long afternoon nap and it's hard to get him down before 8. He used to take a cat nap on the way home from daycare, but dropped that around 6 months. Sometimes the morning nap is as short as 30 minutes, but it still resets him.

We do solids after wakeups, and not close to naps, because we discovered he stays asleep better when he takes a decent sized bottle not too long before a nap.

I would play with two naps since the goal is to drop the Catnap eventually. If you try puttin her down earlier at 8:30 for the first one she may actually take a longer nap. But if she doesn’t and she’s up from the first nap at 9:30 then you’ll just know you’ll need a third nap. But then if that whole day goes to crap the next day you could tray to nap at 9:15 and see if that makes any difference.

@mrsbubbletea: If my kid woke up at 5 and wouldn’t go back to sleep I would definitely do three naps. But then another day if she sleeps later you can try the two naps. I think that’s the hard part about the transition is each day is going to be different.

@Jennibenni: see that’s what I am not sure of... should I be maximizing overall daytime sleep and embracing the third nap? On days she wakes up super early like 5 (😭) it’s nice because three naps fit in perfectly... she’ll nap at like 630 and it pushes both of the other naps enough to make it to bedtime! Or I could push bedtime back, let her take a third nap until she is able to extend her naps and awake time?

I think you should experiment with the times a little and see if you can find something that works better. 2-3-4 was great for my first kid but I also have a 10 mo and it just doesn’t work with him. His nap schedule is more 3-3-2 because thats just what we’ve found to be the sweet spot. (This is on the weekends, at daycare he naps like crap.)

It does sound like if you moved both naps sooner you’d more easily bbe able to get her down for a third catnap.

@annem1990: I have tried kind of in an accidental way when dealing with the older one or showering or something, and as a younger baby it totally worked. Wish I had been consistent about it. Now she just starts flinging herself around trying to pull up. I think stretching the second wake time can potentially help.

@LBee: you might be on To something! She kind of shows tired cues like from the time she wakes up until her first nap so I had been clinging to the 2 hour time as something to be consistent with.

Oh that’s tough! I would try moving the first nap to 8:30 AM and see if maybe that lengthens the first nap for her? I know that seems opposite of what you would think. My LO2 is a similar age and she does 1.5-3-4. I have no qualms about putting her down early. I work full time but try to remind myself is quality not quantity of time together. A fussy baby is miserable! Her days vary based on first wake time but today looked like this:

6:45 Wake-up
8:15 - 9:15 Nap
12:30 - 2:30 Nap
6:30 Asleep for the night

Some of it is just age. I know that sucks to hear but the transition to 2-3-4 is miserable. We did a lot of 5 pm on the way home cat naps. About 15 minutes gave her just enough sleep to help her offset a day similar to your daughter’s and make it to at least 6:30.

One thing our nanny often does if she wakes up after 45 minutes is she will get her up then put her back down 30 minutes later. She usually happily goes back to sleep.

Could you shorten the first nap to only 30-45mins. That seems to lengthen my LOs 2nd nap.

Could you stretch that second wake time and put her down at 1:30?

I am going to try to make this concise and not offer tons of information that is unnecessary to my question, which I tend to when I post on here.

My baby girl, 10mo, has finally improved from 30 min naps to a typical 1h-1h15min nap. I am so glad she did improve, but this length still makes it really hard for me to figure out ideal bedtime/naptimes. I tried to implement 2-3-4, and it really doesnt work too well with 1 hour naps.

7a: typical wake time
9a-10a: nap 1
1-2: nap 2
Bedtime is 7. She can barely make it 4 hours on a good nap day. Usually she ends up waking more like 145ish. I haven't consistently tried 6pm bedtime but it feels way too early for me and the times I have tried it she woke up a million times. I usually try to do a cat nap at 4ish but she often isn't quite tired by then and its a tough time for me to manage with dinner approaching, cranky 3yo, etc.

Any insight or suggestions?
