Don't think it's a boy/girl thing. My daughter does it too, especially while she's nursing. I think she just likes the rythm/how it feels? I'll put my hand on her head where she's hitting and let her hit my hand, but she doesn't seem to enjoy that as much.

@Adira: I have to wipe Isaac's hair after almost every meal!

@bunnylovesbear: At least he is at an age now were you can teach him other ways to get out frustration. That is interesting that your daughter never did it, but your son does.

My son does this all the time - when it first started, I was like, ohhh...so THIS is the difference between little boys and little girls bc my daughter NEVER did that. lol.

He does it for all sorts of reasons, but mostly when he is frustrated. He's almost 19 months now, so we're trying to teach him how to use calm breathing instead!

@ALV91711: haha, of course!!! Luckily Xander still has pretty short hair, so I can usually just wipe it out with a cloth!

Glad to hear that other babies do this too. This morning he was doing it and he was starting to clap and then would change to smacking his head, he seemed to think it was funny.

@MUI831: Yikes! You would think that would hurt to do more than once.

@mskeee: DS is always squeezing my boobs if he has the chance.

@Alivoo01: I guess they wouldn't hurt themselves.

@lilyann: His dad started doing it with him this morning, so now he thinks it is even funnier.

@Adira: The best way to get food in his hair, hit himself? That will not be fun to have to wash hair every night once he is feeding himself.

@Corduroy: We have a ped appointment in a week, so if he keeps it up I'll see what she says.

When DS (15mo) gets mad he throws himself on the ground and hits his head against the floor. Not too hard but I think it would hurt me. I've heard this is normal. I guess my brother used to do this and one time he did it so hard that it hurt and he stopped. So it looks like DS inherited some of my brother's intensity/temper. Awesome.

It does look painful and it makes me think she might end up like an anxious hair twirler, but she is always happy when she's doing it. I think she likes how it feels especially on her hands, because she loves to whack me in the (jiggly) belly with her hands and grab and squeeze my boobs, ha ha ha! But I remember at my mom's group she was yanking away and another mom thought it was sort of bad and crazy, so I don't know.

@mskeee: DS is 7 months old and does this too!!!!! And he hits HARD!!!! I was a bit concerned, but he doesn't seem to be in pain so I just watch it, and try to stop him from bashing his head/pulling on his hair when he's going at it. Hope it stops soon because it looks painful!

DS did that at about that age or he would bump his head on something (would wait a second) and then bump it again! ugh! He thought it was funny and he liked seeing my reaction  Little stinker!

My 11 month old started doing that when she had an ear infection. The ear infection is gone but she kept doing it.

When I took her to the doctor for the ear infection I mentioned the head hitting and the ped wasn't concerned at all. He said it wasn't necessarily a sign of ear infection and is typical for the age.

@mskeee: Ok, I wasn't sure if this was just a stage babies went through or not. He seemed to be smiling while he was doing it.

@Fronkinzankinsbride: He seemed to be pretty happy, but I kind of wondered this.

Why are babies so confusing.

My 7 month old does this all the time - has for awhile! It seems normal to me? Maybe? I have never really worried about it. She also yanks her hair really hard too.

Could be a sign of pain maybe. Ear ache, head ache. That would be my first guess.

He started slapping the side of his head repeatedly many different times throughout the day. What is up with this?
