I’d definitely bring it up at the one year visit—but only for your peace of mind.

I know you’ve heard this before but—There is a wide range of normal. And this sounds similar to what both my kids were doing at 11 months. One walked at 16 months and one at 17 months. Both now are running and happy typically developing 2 and 3 year olds.

That kind of sounds like my son, who had low muscle tone. Just... this total lack of interest in moving. It wasn't a big deal and he caught up very fast once PT gave him a push. But I think that without PT, his progress would have been slower, possibly by months. If you have the opportunity to get an Early Intervention evaluation and start therapy, it's very helpful. It's a good idea to get the ball rolling sooner rather than later, because it can take a few weeks to get an eval, and another few weeks to be assigned a therapist.

Oh, and it's quite possible that while you wait for EI he'll just get moving on his own. But what have you got to lose? Then you can just opt out of therapy, or end up having the therapy focus on something else, like fine motor skills.

One of mine didn’t start walking until almost 15 months and we noticed how strange her walking was almost immediately. I can’t recall her crawling and sitting up but I feel it was delayed as well.

Anyway, for us it was all due to low tone. She STILL struggles with gross motor from the low tone and she is in PT weekly. Just this last week she has been falling down constantly (at two and a half years) and I remarked to my husband how relieved I was that we already have her in PT constantly being evaluated and observed. It’s important to me that we are doing all that we can to help her. So my vote definitely is to check in with specialists! It will give you peace of mind and also potentially identify any issues (I have learned so much that I didn’t know about low tone from our PT experience).

Always talk to your ped if you’re concerned, BUT:

My daughter did not crawl until 13 months. No interest at all until she just did it.

She didn’t walk until almost 18 months. Again, no interest.

She didn’t like to crawl. Wasn’t motivated to walk. Even at almost 4, she just LOVES to be held. For us, it’s purely a personality thing.

Hi all, thanks for replies. I totally forgot we have a close friend who is an OT for children. So I was able to run down the list of things he can and can’t do and she basically said she’s not too worried right now. She said it’s important to let things happen in the right order (like don’t force things he isn’t doing on his own - like prop him up to stand) and as much tummy time as possible because that strengthens the core.

So I’ll bring up at 1yr well visit but it sounds like it’s nothing to be concerned with just yet.

That sounds a little like my DS who has low muscle tone. When your son sits, does he have a rounded back or does he sit up straight? I had talked to my pediatrician about it, but we went through early intervention for an assessment. He did qualify for PT, and we've been doing it mostly consistently ever since. She pointed out the rounded back and also that he was very reluctant to put weight on his hands/arms. I can't remember exactly when he went from army crawling to real crawling, but he walked at 19 months. At least in our state, you don't need a referral to early intervention, you can just call on your own and get on the list for an assessment.

I’m glad you called the ped because peace of mind matters! I also feel like, based on the posts here and from people I know, these things could be something that maybe needs a little PT or absolutely nothing. Kids are so different! Like @bhbee, my niece never crawled, barely pulled up, and then just walked at 18 mos. she was and is just very cautious! She’s 8 now and totally normal. My LO who is also 11mos just started getting into a seated position last week. Before that she technically could sit but never did. She army crawled until maybe a month ago but was always moving so we assumed she just found army crawling more efficient! She can pull up but doesn’t cruise and isn’t interested in walking. Anyway, this is all to say it’s really hard to know but I wouldn’t worry too much and definitely listen to your ped!

A friend of mine had a baby 10 days after my son was born. (Mine was 2 weeks early and hers was one day past due). They couldn’t have been more different in terms of gross motor. Her daughter didn’t crawl until she was over 12 months and didn’t walk until 18 months. She definitely had low muscle tone (you could feel it when you held her) but she never went to a specialist. She didn’t seem too concerned. I’m pretty sure her daughter was held most of the time because she used to screeeeam when you put her down. Now she’s 3 and totally “normal” in terms of physical abilities.

It’s worth the peace if mind to call!!

Calling for peace of mind is always a good plan!

I had a kid that was way behind (to me). My first sat up at 5.5m but pretty much then nothing. She finally scoot crawled (never crawled hands and knees really) at 11m. I don’t remember about pulling up or cruising but don’t think she did much. She was interested in being up standing but with help. We got her an EI evaluation - I called around 17m I think and then bam one day she walked across the room before the actual evaluation. Like zero of the drunk baby learning to walk, just stood up and did it out of nowhere. She failed to qualify for EI but I’m glad I called. They told me even without walking she wouldn’t have qualified based on other areas going well, maybe that was specific to MA.

Funny thing, she walked like a pro that one day and then wouldn’t do it again for weeks. And then one day again - stood up and walked from then on. She has always done things her own way and time. Kids are weird! She’s 7 now and you would never know she was ever behind. Actually you couldn’t tell even a month after she walked consistently that she had been behind. My second was wayyy different (more normal/average) so she just came that way!

@SweetiePie: I haven't read through all the responses, but depending on how you feel about chiropractics maybe take him to see a children's one. My best friend is a chiro and another one of our friends has a boy that had low tone. She gave him some exercises/stretches/therapies to try with him while waiting to see the doc @ 1. It helped improve a lot, he still needed PT and other therapies, but it helped with some development.

ETA: not all chiros are created equal, there are some real quacks out there. I'd look specifically for one that has a sorts medicine or PT section to it.

So a lot of what you described reminds me of DS1. At 11 months he was just starting to scoot on his butt (he never really crawled). He couldn't sit up from laying down, didn't roll much, wouldn't stand or cruise. He didn't have low muscle tone and technically didn't have anything "wrong" with him, but he was very behind on all of his gross motor skills. He ended up being referred for early intervention services and qualified for PT. It was a great decision, if only for my peace of mind. Early intervention was very easy to work with (I know this varies by state) and I loved our PT. She worked with him weekly (came to my home in the evening but she would have also gone to daycare, but I wanted to be there to see what she did) for about 8 months, then moved to bi weekly, then monthly then we stopped. He sat up from laying on his own at about 14 months. Somewhere between 14 and 17 months he crawled for about a week, started cruising, and eventually started walking at 17 months. In retrospect, I think he waited to walk until he knew he could do it well. That's just sort of how his personality is with everything. So I don't know if PT was actually necessary, but like I said, really made me feel better. He's 3.5 now and runs, walks, jumps all over the place and you'd never know that he was on the late side for meeting his early gross motor milestones.

DS2 is 11 months currently (almost a year) and he crawls all over the place and rolls and sits up from laying down, but he won't pull to stand or cruise or use a push walker. I am a lot less stressed about it this time around. I think I am just not good at making kids who walk on time, haha. I plan on talking to his ped about it, but probably won't pursue early intervention this time unless she think's it's really necessary.

Anyway, definitely talk to the doctor if you are concerned and ask about early intervention! It sounds like he'd probably qualify, but I really don't think you have anything to worry about in the long term. I remember being really stressed out going to classes or play groups and seeing all of these other kids crawling or walking, but really, I shouldn't have let it bother me.

@MenagerieMama: I should have mentioned that the ONE sick visit I took him to was like a month ago. We thought he might have had an ear infection (he did not, he just likes sticking his finger in his ear, lol) and when there my husband mentioned that he can’t get from sitting to crawling or get himself to sitting. Nothing else. And she said “he could just have low muscle tone” but she sounded totally unconcerned. She said to give it a little time.
But in the last month I’ve just been realizing that the list of things he can’t do is pretty long and that’s what made me feel a little concerned. We’ve been spending more and more time with other babies his age or younger and it has been eye opening for me. Babies a month or two younger are doing so much more and the parents are surprised when I say he’s a couple weeks away from a year old!
But again, he might just be on the slower end of still normal and all of these babies are normal to advanced. Who knows.

I called and our ped wasn’t in today (they take turns on weekends) and all I want to do is ask the questions on the phone. So I’ll call back Monday when she’s in. She knows me well and is a straight shooter so I will do whatever she says.

I totally understand your concerns. My first was the same way. Except he couldn't army crawl. He was my potted plant. Eventually he figured out the walker. He pushed it all over the house. This was the week before his birthday. Then he was a cruising machine (only if I helped him stand up). Tgen at 17 months, literally the day before I was supposed to call early intervention he started walking from wall to wall. That week he also learned to pull himself up and a few weeks later he learned to sit up.

It was so hard to be at playdates with kids the same age literally running in circles around my potted plant. But were about 10 days from his 3rd birthday and you'd never know he was a late bloomer now. He caught up.

A similar thing happened with his speech. I actually debated with my pediatrician about if EI made sense (I'm all for early intervention, but my kid was showing signs of a specific problem I could easily fix at home). We were days away from calling because he only spoke 50 wods and didn't connect them well (but signed 4-5 word sentences). He was making progress then overnight it clicked and he won't shut up 😂. People now complement us about how advanced he is, less than 6 months later. Kids change quickly.

So I say trust your gut. I talked to experts in my network for informal PT and language advice and trusted he would catch up. He did. But if your gut says this is a problem, it's always worth a call.

@SweetiePie: I understand the feeling. You can definitely wait if you feel you need too. You have an appointment soon. I totally know how you feel about being conflicted. I'm not an alarmist myself. My kids have rarely been to the doctor for being sick, only for strep, mono and hand foot and mouth.

I agree with @annem1990: I had a friend whose baby at 12 months old still wanted to lay down and wasn't really crawling or walking. But in like two months met all those milestones.

I’d bring him in just to ease your mind. It can’t hurt and IF something is delayed, they can get the ball rolling.
BUT this doesn’t sound alarming to me at all. At 10months, DS was just starting to crawl and was definitely not pulling up. He was walking by 13months. The “cruising” phase didn’t last long at all. Maybe a month? Ped was not concerned.

@cyoung: thanks!
So I think the only reason I’ll wait for a specialist is because he has his 1yr well visit in mid feb anyway. So I keep telling myself to just wait for that. But then when my mind starts to say “it seems like an issue”, 3 weeks seems too long.
So then I start wondering if I should schedule a “sick visit”. My ped is great maybe I should just call her and ask.
I’m really not an alarmist. Like, I think in this baby’s entire year of life I’ve called the ped like 3 times. And he’s had only 1 sick visit. I am by nature a wait and see person unless I’m confident that it’s a big problem. So I’m at conflict with myself right now. Lol. It’s not life threatening and it’s not like he’s unhappy or sleeping poorly. But maybe I’ll call to get her take.

I think honestly I would take him only cause you just never know. I personally dont have answers but a doctor will give you peace of mind. Every baby is different and reaches milestones differently. I think a specialist can just shed some light for you and help you figure out what is going on. If your baby is okay and is on track developmentally for him then they will just say he is fine and give you things to look out for. But if they feel like something needs to be done you can get help asap and you can go ahead and get in some therapy and give you tips to help.

My son has a major speech delay (we are also evaluating him for autism) and most people were telling me he was fine cause boys don't talk as quick but a doctor told me he definitely needed some therapy. I'm glad we started ealry. He still struggles talking but we are working on it.

I've always been told the just "wait and see" mentality is not the best way to go.

I know there’s a whole range of normal but I guess I’m not sure if this is it.

11mo army crawls. He can sit unassisted. He can roll over. That’s about it.

He JUST (like maybe 2 weeks ago) figured out how to get from sitting to army crawl. But it’s still not graceful and sometimes struggles. He cannot get from army crawl to sitting.

He cannot pull up. He cannot get to sitting on his own. He cannot Cruise. He cannot sit on his knees (we’ve tried to place him on his knees and he just flops, and he certainly can’t get to his knees on his own). even if we stand him up at the couch he will not move. It’s not even like he tries and falls. He doesn’t even try. And actually it’s like he can’t stand there holding the couch with just his hands for balance. We lean him against it and his feet slowly slide back until he’s evenfually bent over with his head sort of on the couch. I think he might have a weak core?

He does show interest in standing and walking with our assistance. Like either I’m sitting and holding him in a standing position or holding his hands while we stand. Sometimes he doesn’t want to sit at all like in a music class. I try and he just stiffens and wants to stay standing. He wants very much to walk it seems. But it would be impossible at this stage. I know walking doesn’t need to happen now, but I guess without all the other stuff I can’t see how he could possibly get to walking.

Another weird thing is that he seems to almost forget how to get from back to belly. He’s been rolling since 5 months. Both ways. But lately we’ve noticed that if we lay him on his back in the living room he will just lay there and whine like a sad starfish for 20 mins until we help him. We’re like dude you know how to do this. And we’ll try to push him a little and he is just stiff and acts like he’s never rolled over before. He will still do it in his crib though.

He was born exactly 4 weeks early. Which people keep reminding me of. But, now even if he’s adjusted 10 months, most of these things should already be happening. We have play dates and classes with 9-12mo and they are all doing these things and he looks younger than all of them.

I’m not so worried that I think something MUST be wrong and I want to take him to a specialist. But I am at the point where I’m thinking this might be an issue and I want to gauge how normal it is. Maybe it is and I’m just comparing to my older one (who at this age was doing EVERYTHING short of walking). But it does seem like he’s behind EVERY baby his age and even younger babies. Not just his older brother.
