I've been slacking with giving my almost 11 month old cubed and steamed foods. They love purees. They do like mum mums, puffs and yogurt melts.

Well, I finally got around to steaming some sweet potato and carrots.

DD took the cubed foods ok. DS starting gagging and gagged so hard he threw up the bottle, puffs and mum mums he had just before.

I'm told I'm supposed to keep at the cubed foods but should I give him the sweet potatoe before his bottle so he doesn't throw it all up?

My 1st son did the same thing. He ended up having some sensory issues (related to food textures). We did some therapy, and now at 3.5 he is MUCH better. It's a pretty typical phase though, especially that young, so I wouldn't worry too much just yet.

My 2nd son is 11 months and is the total opposite. He eats everything in sight. You just never know!

MumMums and puffs were what got my DD interested in table food. Also, eating off our plates. There are days when she doesn't want to eat any finger food, but if I sit down to eat she'll eat what I'm having.

@aprild: Keep trying with things like puffs, Mum Mums, and yogurt bites! I know it's hard to waste them, but it took my DD a good long while to start eating them instead of throwing them/playing with them. :)

@aprild: i think you just keep offering and they eventually get it. My kid kept throwing food and eventually started to put in her mouth.

@aprild: Oh, my kids loves puffs. Have you tried Mum mums or teething wafers? http://mummums.com/

I gave mum mums to my babies since they seem to dissolve very easily. Once they got used to them, I introduced puffs.

You could also try the yogurt melts and puffs to get him used to the feeling of more solid food. They melt in the mouth so they wouldn't actually choke on the food.

Thanks for the responses! I'm glad I'm not the only one dealing with this. I got worried after seeing other kids younger than my son eating all sorts of things like corn on the cob, which I couldn't imagine my son doing. But every baby develops at their own pace.

I think that is fairly normal for that age...? My pediatrician told us to offer a variety of tastes and textures and it can take a while for them to get used to them. It took a while for my daughter to get used to solids (over a year), so we did lots of purees and mashed foods. Once she got used to the flavored she was more open to dealing with different textures.

My 10 month old twins are still eating purees and they gag when I give the cubed steamed sweet potatoes. I'm not into BLW but the book I got said gagging is normal. So my thought was that I needed to keep giving them cubed foods on a regular basis to get them used to the texture. I haven't really been on it because we were traveling last week and it was easier to just do purees.

Right now, as a first time mom, I am afraid of choking so that's why my plan is to give them things that mash easily (sweet potato, potatos, carrots, avocados). I'm not quite ready for things that don't (like pasta).

My nephew did have issues with texture. I think he was more than a year old and still like foods with no texture. He does have some sensory issues. He is 5 now and he outgrown it.

Mine was almost exactly the same way. Even at 12 months she wouldn't eat much. We got her to eat avocado from the Boon silicon feeder and that transitioned to eating regular pieces of avocado. And then slowly she'd try a bit more but one day it was like a switch flipped and she started eating more and stopped gagging on everything. That was prob around 14 months.

It is so frustrating especially if you compare your baby to others that are eating much more and more easily. I even had myself convinced we'd have to do feeding therapy. But it all resolved on its own (though she's not a voracious eater now at 16 months but will eat plenty and no gagging) so hopefully the same will happen for you.

My 11 month old only wants to eat purees, and they can't be chunky at all or he will gag/vomit. I've tried offering him all kinds of table food, like soft chunks of vegetable, fruits and pasta, but he just throws it on the floor and refuses to try to eat it. If I try putting a piece of food in his mouth for him, he will gag and sometimes vomit. He's never been very excited about food, since I often have to coax him to eat even the purees. If I just leave a bunch of table food on his tray, he won't eat anything. Is this something he will eventually grow out of? Has anyone else had a baby with no interest in table food?
