@septca: Thank you so much for that! I'm guessing the apples Xander eats are more like applesauce (since it's apple purees), so I should probably try to avoid them more! It's hard though because I feel like all the fruit purees have bananas or apples in them!! But I try to make sure he gets some of the P foods too!

Re: the apples issue, apples and apple juice and applesauce all have different types of sugars (the sugar changes as the fruit is processed)... apples should not be a problem, but applesauce is part of the BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet, which should be avoided if you are having any stoppage issues. "P" foods (plums, prunes, pears, peaches, peas) are great for moving things along. DD had a lot of digestive issues until about 11 months, so we avoided all BRAT foods and gave her at least one P food a day. Her issues magically cleared once her digestive track matured a bit and now she can eat anything without issue.

I'm going to say the same thing as @Weagle - DD's interest in drinking and her fluids intake increased *dramatically* once we weaned. She used to take a sip or two of WCM at dinner, now she'll down 3-4 ounces at once. I just put her straw cup on her high chair tray with her food, and she drinks from it same as you would with your dinner beverage.

@Dandelion: Okay, I'll definitely try cutting back on the bananas and see if that helps!

@scg00387: Right, he's dairy-free! And thanks for the advice! :D

@Adira: I would just keep giving him solids as he asks and leave the milk out as an option. Cheese can also be a constipation but I think he doesn't do dairy? http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/constip.htm#.UvOx6GS9Kc0

@Dandelion: I hope so!! I currently feel like he's probably NOT getting enough liquids because lately he's been constipated, but maybe I need to stop feeding him so much bananas and apples... though they're his favorite... ugh!

@scg00387: So avoid all the foods Xander loves! :P Do you think if Xander seems more hungry, I should offer more solids? Or should I just keep offering the milk in the hopes he'll drink it?

@Dandelion: I don't know about at daycare, but at home, he has access to a sippy of water all day. We keep it with his toys, so he can get to it himself when he's playing! And sometimes he will stop and take a sip, but never very much. But maybe that will increase once we stop the bottles?

Mine barely drank until we were down to 3 nursing times a day. I would not limit food to try and push liquid? He knows what he needs. We have water in one spot all day so he can go ask for itif he is thirsty, too. You can't really force a baby to drink , or eat, so just offer it! For constipation purees prunes helped a lt, avoid rice bananas apples applesauce toast.

@travellingbee: @Adira: R doesn't drink a ton either. And half of what she drinks ends up on her bib cause she lets it dribble out. It is making me really nervous for weaning. I am going to get some milk this week and start offering it with meals. But I have a feeling it is going to be really hard transition.

My youngest was EBF until 12 months and then I slowly (very slowly) weaned him off BM by cutting sessions per day and then eventually went down to one time a day for a month until he one day started drinking less and less (around 14 months) so that was it for BM. During that time I introduced formula (which you can do whole milk if he's over 12 months) and he did fine. I really like Baby's Only organic formula with DHA/ARA. It doesn't smell bad but just a little hard to mix. I have to use a formula mixer thingy to help prevent clumps. The reason why I stuck with formula for so long is b/c we moved overseas. Since the transition was crazy I didn't want to interrupt his routine. Now that we are finally settled in I can start transitioning him from bottle to drinking milk during meals just like his big brother. He drinks out of all of his sippies fine including a straw sippy. He can also drink out of a regular cup but with my help. Otherwise, he'll spill it all over himself.

Have you tried giving him soup during meals? If he likes soup as much as my youngest he'll get a good amount of liquids in his body as well. I like home made chicken soup. I usually make it Chinese style with ginger, garlic, and scallions. Just plain no salt and my youngest loves it. You can also put carrots in there as well. You can omit the ginger and just put garlic if you think he won't like ginger (it's an acquired taste for some). Oh, and I also tried putting the chicken soup in a sippy once it's cooled down to luke warm. I was trying anything to get my youngest to try soup. LOL!

Hopefully he wont' have any problem transitioning! Some babies may like more flavor. You can also try water with some cucumber. I sometimes chase my kids around the house reminding them to drink water. Otherwise, they won't.

@Weagle: Thanks!! I'm really just going to cross my fingers and hope that after I wean, he starts drinking more, but I'm scared!

@travellingbee: I am too! I really don't think it's going to go over well because Xander's used to getting his bottles at a certain time at daycare. I'm scared about just not giving them to him anymore and what will happen!!! And I REALLY am scared about him becoming dehydrated and even more constipated than he already is!!

She got milk for meals and she could have water any time of the day. There was always a cup nearby. I also usually let her have a cup of water in the car because she'll drink out of boredom. Now that she's older she asks for whichever one she wants, so we don't have set times for either.

@travellingbee: Well, oddly, it makes me feel better knowing Xander's not the only one! But I am nervous about our babies when we transition them off BM!

I'm kind of thinking that when I do the transition, I just won't increase his solids at all, so that hopefully if he's hungry, he'll have the milk instead... but not sure if that will work...

I have no advice but L is exactly the same. He won't drink more than a couple sips out of any kind of cup. Last night I even tried a bottle with dinner and he wasn't interested at all in milk or water. He just wanted finger food.

So I brought this up before how Xander pretty much wasn't drinking water during his meals and I was concerned about constipation (which we've been dealing with) and the advice I got was basically to not really worry about it since he's still getting plenty of fluids from breast milk and to just give him lots of high-water fruits and have his water available to him throughout the day, etc.

So anyway, we've recently started offering hemp milk at dinner because I want to get him to used to the flavor, but like the water, he's pretty much not drinking any of it. I also keep his water cup out in the play area so he always has access to it, though he rarely drinks from it. I've also been feeding him pears with practically every meal to combat the constipation we've been dealing with. He's still drinking plenty of BM, but I'm concerned about what will happen when we STOP offering bottles and I stop nursing. Will he eventually start drinking with meals because he's not getting the liquids elsewhere?? Any advice on how to make the transition smoother so he doesn't get dehydrated when we stop with the BM??
