My son's birthday is actually today, so right between Christmas and New Years. We had a friend birthday party 2 weeks ago to make sure that people were still around and free to attend. It was his first real party (he's 5). We normally just have a little family birthday party the day of. I personally would not consider doing a half birthday party for him. I don't think it would be easier to do a summer party because a lot of people around here go away for the summer or take long vacations.

I've been considering doing this for my daughter whose birthday is Jan 8th. Her daddy is Jan 6th. So there's just a lot going on in our house during that time period. This year we're throwing her a 1st birthday party but I think in the future, I may do 1/2 birthday celebrations instead. Plus it's so much easier planning a summer party than a winter one because you're able to have it outside.

I wouldn't unless my LOs birthday was super close to Christmas... My BFF's son is a Christmas Day baby so she mentioned celebrating his half birthday when he is a bit older - I think it's a great idea.

I'm actually considering doing this for our kids when they get older. D's birthday is 1/17, and Babygirl is due 2/2. It's a lot to do the holidays and then jump right into their birthdays. I think once they're old enough, we'll ask them what they want to do - celebrate with a smaller party at their birthday, or wait till later in the year when we can do maybe a little bit bigger of a party (space-wise, it's hard to cram a lot of people into our house in cold weather).

Thanks for the comments everyone! I think maybe we'll just have a cake with my parents next weekend and plan better to have a real party near his birthday next year.

DDs bday is in December too, just a few days before Christmas. We didn't throw a big party for her this year but we did get a cake and celebrated with family. We kept it super simple. Don't feel guilty...they will have many more parties to come! With that said, I'm not a fan of 1/2 bday parties.

I would probably just do it in a few weeks myself, but an invite to a 1/2 birthday with an explanation would be fine too. I would think it's fun.

My birthday isn't in December, so take this with a grain of salt, but my son's is...I think it's kind of silly to do a half birthday. If people want to celebrate with him, they make the time, if they don't, then I reciprocate their choice by skipping thier celebrations. I make a point to let people know in advance what we're doing and those that really matter are there.

For a December birthday, I think celebrating the 1/2 bday in July is fine. Growing up kids with Summer birthdays often had parties at "off" times too.

I think I would be confused, but if I knew you weren't going to do an official 1st or 2nd birthday party then it would make sense.

I've had people suggest this for my new December baby. Don't know how I feel about it really, but if I was invited to one I wouldn't think twice. Just bear in mind July is also a difficult time for people to schedule wth vacations and such.

DS turns one next week and all of our family was just in town for Christmas. If I had planned better I would have just brought a cake to Christmas dinner for him, but the holidays really snuck up on me and so did his birthday!

We've always thrown big awesome parties for his older sister so I'm just feeling super guilty about skipping a party this year, but I know family members won't be able to come visit again for a few months so I'm considering doing a 1/2 birthday party in July..

How do you feel about half birthday parties? If you got invited to a 1.5 year old 1/2 birthday would think it was dumb or fun?
