AMAZING how different everyone's LOs can sleep at different ages! I guess I'll just have to wait and see. But reassuring to know she can go that long without being starved. I will probably feed though anytime she wakes up - I'd feel so bad if she was hungry and I was just trying to force her to sleep through it. We've had a couple of 7+ hours now between feedings so I'm hopeful!

My LO has never ever ever slept 12 hours straight and she is 12 months old and breastfed. The longest she has ever gone is 10 hours and that was the day before yesterday. Up until a week ago she was waking every 3-4 hours and has been that way her entire life.

LO has never slept 12 hours without a wakeup and he's 7 months. Since we sleep trained at 5.5 months he regularly (basically every night) sleeps 8-9 hours (7:30pm-4amish), eats 3oz and then goes back down for about 2 hours.

He's a big boy too, 20 pounds at 7 months. Before we sleep trained he was sleeping 3 hour stretches max.

**if he woke up before 8h, I would CIO with checking in on him and offering a bak rub or son to him. If he up at 8h or after, then I'd let him up and we'd start our day.

At 4 months WJ was RIDICULOUSLY chubby and healthy, so with the OK of our pediatrician (that he didn't really NEED a night feeding anymore) we sleep trained and he did great.

LMW was also plenty chubby and healthy, but we didn't sleep train her for whatever reason (not wanting her cries to wake up WJ, etc) and she naturally started sleeping 12ish hrs each night around 8 months. She did it for about a week when she was 6 months then stopped (teething?), then started doing it again consistently at around 8 months and has ever since.

I know, I am BLESSED!! I cannot complain, and I don't!

Oh, both were EBF. Night feedings were all pumped milk for both of them. No formula or rice cereal in the bottles for either.

I think some kids are just naturally great sleepers and will go throughout the night because they'd rather sleep than eat... and some kids just wake because of their hunger and need you!!

My daughter (19 months) has never, never once in her life slept for 12 hours. She just STTN from 9-6:30 (STTN is fairly rare for her) and I was just about to go check on her when she woke up. Usually if she sleeps through she wakes at 5 or so to nurse for a while.

Now, at just over 2 years, he's sleeping a lot longer, but we still have night wakeups. Most nights he logs 10 hours.

My LO was able to sleep 11-12 hours at around 12 weeks - just in time for me to go back to work. It certainly hasn't continued every single day, there have been sleep regressions, but for the most part that's her norm. But I think a lot of it is luck that we have a great sleeper.

When we sleep trained at 6 months, we got STTN for 12 hours. We had a dreamfeed in there until last week when I was too tired to do it. LO slept right through the feeding period. We've had small regressions where he'll wake up at 4am, but we don't go into the nursery and let him work it out. So, we've had 12 hour sleeps from 6 months on with CIO. Before that, we were lucky to get 5-6 hours at a tick. I think he got used to being tended to when he cried and fussed in his crib. It's a lesson for us for the next baby for sure.

While I do think it’s possible and many babies DO go that long without feeding, I think just as many babies cannot go the full 12 hours at that age. I think this is one of those things that is truly individual depending on the baby. I think many people and even doctors expect too much from young babies, and everything I have read (even most sleep books) say that until 9ish months, you should expect 1-2 night feeds over a 12 hour period. Also, waking up to nurse isn’t just “out of hunger” for some babies. If they are working on new milestones or learning something new, wonder week, teething, etc, they often wake up more to nurse out of comfort, not food. This is totally normal and usually passes once things calm down and they master whatever it is they are working through.

When I told DS's pediatrician that he started sleeping 11-12 hours without waking right before he turned one, he told me it's actually pretty rare. He said most of the kids he sees do 9-10 hours at night until they drop all of their daytime naps! Fwiw, neither of my kids STTN consistently until one year old, and most nights they both sleep about 10 hours (DS sleeps a little more since he's younger).

CAN they? Yes, most babies probably physically CAN sleep that long at that age, as in they don't NEED to eat. But that doesn't mean they don't get hungry and wakeup and complain about it (or wakeup and complain for a million other reasons...). I am also feeling bitter right now about the 2-3 hour stretches we've been getting :)

my LO started STTN (11 hours) when she was 10 weeks. not every night, but maybe every other night. so i knew she was able to sleep that long without eating. then she got sick, went thru a regression, we traveled, etc...so she was waking up 1x a night to nurse for a couple months and we just did CIO to night wean a few days ago and its working out well so far. she STTN again for 3 of the last 4 nights, so it is doable. she is 6 months right now. our pedi said by 2 months, babies do not need to eat at night (but i found that way too young to do CIO. we even tried it once when she was 3 months and 4 months and she wouldn't stop crying. i dont think she was ready). that being said, i think sleeping is largely based on the disposition of your baby...in other words, its luck of the draw.

LO is EBF (+ solids now as she's 10.5 months old) and started sleeping 12 hours through the night consistently at 2.5 months. We didn't sleep train, she just started sleeping 12 hr stretches every night and has done that ever since. So yes, it is certainly possible for babies with tiny tummies to go twelve hours overnight without eating, even when it's the more quickly digested breast milk!

I think the longest DS ever slept through the night was 10 or 11 hours. He was about 3 months and was consistently sleeping that way for weeks... It was heaven!... until the dreaded 4 month sleep regression. And we haven't quite made it back to that since. He is 7 months now. I'm always afraid that he might really be hungry so I can't ignore/refuse his comfort nursing these days.
