We had something similar with eczema that showed up after we started solids, came and went and it took months to figure out. Despite the opinion that rashes or whatever aren't severe, they are an inflammatory response by the body, so I'm of the opinion that of course they should be prevented if it involves something as simple as a change in diet. Unfortunately it's probably just going to take some trial and error on your part. I remember being so frustrated by the process but in our case what we finally figured out was that the reaction was delayed, so after having wheat for example one time, we wouldn't see an effect, but after several days in a row a rash would show up and it would take a few more days to clear up after we removed it. All that to say, take it slowly. Good luck!

Our experience was a little different, but my LO had multiple food intolerances as an infant and we did allergy tests at age 14 months (skin pricks). She was tested for everything that I had needed to eliminate in my own diet, plus a number of other common allergens. Her main symptoms were blood in diaper, rashes, and fussiness before I started the elimination diet (but that was almost a year before the allergy tests). Our pedi probably wouldn't have done the allergy tests if those were the only symptoms but she also had a couple incidents when we introduced solids where she vomited and got what looked like hives after eating certain things.

In our case, her results came back totally clear and we gradually re-introduced all the foods over the next few months. The allergy testing was helpful for me because I was terrified of giving her something she would react to and it really eased my mind to get all negatives. I was definitely aware that there was a chance of false positives though.

@Adira: @LuLu Mom: Thank you! Yes, we have been wondering about the almond milk, just confused overall by the rash change in severity. He used to also be intolerant to soy when I was eating it and nursing him, and so honestly we just haven't tested it yet, but might soon.

@MrsSRS: We'll stop the berries and see what happens. Thanks!

@Rocker2014: Thanks! We'll probably just go this route if we can't figure more out in the next few weeks.

We had an allergist as well and were told that false positives before 2 were super common (we had 3, eggs and both kinds of nuts were positive and she's not allergic now at 3.)

Remember sensitivities are different than allergies. And our allergist also told us to continue to give the foods that might cause a slight reaction to build up tolerance (obviously not the case for severe allergies, although it doesn't sound like your son is in that category.) Berries because of acidic content could be the diaper rash cause, I would try an alternative to almond milk, maybe soy or hemp. Tree nuts are a common sensitivity in kids (and also don't offer a lot of fat that kids need for brain development at this age.)

Berries are super common culprits for diaper rashes. And I think it's true that testing before two isn't usually very conclusive. Egg whites are also a really common allergy that most kids outgrow by 12-18 months...

Our allergist told us that it's REALLY common to get false positives with allergy tests, which is why he won't do broad allergy testing. He only tests for specific things when there has already been an allergic reaction, just to confirm the allergy. So I would take that into consideration when you pursue testing.

ETA: Considering your LO has been on almond milk and has this rash, it's possible he's having a reaction to tree nuts. Have you considered trying a non-nut based milk to see if that helps? Rice milk or hemp milk might be good alternatives.

We did allergy testing on LO at 7 months, because severe allergies run in my family. My understanding is that the negative results are very accurate, but false positives are much more likely before age 2. I definitely think allergy testing could make sense for you, it could help eliminate potential causes of the rash.

Good luck!

My 12-month old is potentially having some food reactions and I'm trying to figure out the next step. We already know he is intolerant to cow's milk protein.

We've introduced some new foods lately - coconut milk yogurt, a few strawberries, peanut butter, and eggs - and have done so in a planned order, but are still a little confused by his symptoms. He's also been drinking almond milk regularly for 3 weeks now.

He's had a diaper rash that has varied in severity for the last 2-3 weeks (which is why we introduce more "new" things because the diaper rash gets better and then bad again...) We had his ped check it 2 days ago, but he said nothing was wrong and it's just his skin that's "sensitive" or something. I don't trust that opinion at this point. DS also has been scratching his scalp a lot in the last few days. Yesterday, after dinner we noticed he had 2 small patches of red spots (maybe hives? but didn't look as bad?) that went away eventually.

We are planning on seeking out an allergist. Our ped has said they can't truly test for things this young, but I feel like others have done so.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Did allergy testing help?
