@annem1990: I think a year is still young enough that this is completely normal and you should go with your gut if you think your LO is hungry. It's also natural for babies to be soothed by nursing or a bottle - at that age honestly if my baby was up and in pain from teething, I'd want to sooth him through feeding if that was what worked...Obviously if it's impacting your ability to function then there are lots of suggestions here on how to troubleshoot, but if you're okay with it, I don't think you should worry that you are doing something wrong...

@annem1990: In my experience when my LO did that he was possibly teething. He would wake up and I would nurse him, check his diaper, possibly tylenol (of in pain and directed by pediatrician). I always keep it boring . He could be hungry or it could definitely be other factors. I’m not an expert but it sounds normal and could also be a sleep regression... so much going on in their little brains!

@Mrsbells: How do you know it’s out of habit and not actually being hungry? He often wakes up randomly at night and just talks to himself and will go back to sleep. He knows how to put himself back to sleep. We did CIO to sleep train and he responded great to it.

This feels different. He screams for 2+ hours. He never did that while sleep training.

@annem1990: at that age as long as you keep feeding him he will wake up out of habit and expect to eat. Just offer water instead and after a while he will accept that as the new normal and not wake up for it. He may still wake up but not to eat

@Boopers: @peaches1038: @Iced Tea: @cake2017: Thank you all for your input. It definitely helps me feel less alone! I think I have this idea in my head that everyone else’s 1 years olds are STTN every night. While that may be true for many, I shouldn’t take it personally if LO does not. He’s TINY (2nd percentile for everything) so I feel like he just needs food.

The interesting thing is that how much he eats during the day/before bed has no bearing on of he’ll STTN. Sometimes he eats a ton of solids for dinner and a 4oz bottle before bed. Sometimes he will barely eat anything. It does not predict whether he will eat in the MOTN or not. It’s just totally random.

I fed LO1 overnight until 15 months. He was hardly eating solids and I can’t imagine what his weight and percentiles would have looked like had we stopped before he was ready to.

LO2 is almost 1 also and he still nurses multiple times at night.

I also found this graphic today that I remember referring to with LO1. I trust the source, but you always have to do what you feel is best for your LO.

This happened to us at a similar age and DD was in ~5th percentile for weight, so I went comfortable CIO though we had our doctors blessing. What helped was to pack her full of protein rich food at dinner and then a quick protein snack before bed. Good luck!

ETA: I'd try some pouches with quinoa or oatmeal, both which are filling (quinoa with decent protein too!) before bed.

I say follow your gut on this one.

At my LO's 9 month appointment, the pediatrician insisted she should not need any nutrition overnight, but it felt wrong to me. I tried to reduce night time breastfeeding. At her 12 month appointment, she hadn't gained weight, and he told me it looks like she DOES need it overnight, and I should give it to her. You can imagine what I thought.

@annem1990: Every baby is different! He may be hungry and it could be a froth spurt”... a lot happening that age! - teething, walking, etc... I’d feed him and just keep it boring. Also before bed maybe give oatmeal and water or milk?! LO did the same and actually just started sleeping through the night at 12mo. However the other night he woke up crying- i waited and he didn’t settle so I just went in and nursed him and he went back. He knows how to go to sleep on his own too. Just see how it goes for a few days and also get feedback from your pediatrician. Every baby is different though!

Exact same as pollywog. My first would wake and I’d get a cup of water and a pouch after one year old and then she’d go back to sleep and it didn’t last long. 1-2 weeks around 15 months old. Both my kids stopped waking to breastfeed at 6 months and my first was weaned at 13 months. I’m fully expecting there to be some sleep wakings at some point with my youngest who is 13 months and I’ll plan to tackle it the same way. Sometimes I wake up hungry or thirsty and my toddler woke up crying for water last night. It happens! I’d continue doing what you’re doing with no hesitation if it were me.

I went through several phases of" pouch? Juice?". My kid was hungry. I kept yogurt based pouches near his crib and he sucked thrm right down and went back to bed. Each phase didn't last long. Less than 2 weeks.

Ummm my 20 month old still nurses once or twice overnight, sooo I don't know where these people are coming at you saying your kid has to be STTN, every night!

Maybe you can give him some milk before bed?

Have you tried banana or yogurt or something else with more calories before bed? Not exactly the same but my DS woke at 5 for several weeks around 14months old and it was definitely because he was hungry/in a growth spurt. He had never wakened that early before and hasn’t done it again since!

Could he just be thirsty? Could you try water instead of milk?

With my older one, we had to wean him off the milk at night around that age. I started by just watering down his milk little by little until eventually it was just water. Now he just has a cup of water by his bed.

Have you tried giving him just a little bit more before bed? I mean if he's hungry, I would feed him; but @ 12 months they normally don't need to eat at night. If you haven't had his 1 year appointment yet, I would pick your pediatrician's brain.

PLEASE tell me this is a normal phase...
LO just turned 1. He started STTN at 6 months. But, he goes through random spurts of time (a couple of days to weeks) where he will wake up around 3am and want to eat. At this point I'm only giving him 2 ounces, which seems to work great. He goes right back to sleep and wakes at a reasonable hour.

DH and I are so conflicted. We always put him into bed awake and he falls asleep on his own. He sometimes wakes up around 10-11pm and chats for a few minutes and then goes back to sleep. So I really don't think he is waking up and not being able to fall back asleep.

We've tried CIO and he will cry for upwards of 2 hours. It's brutal. We did CIO to sleep train and it worked amazing with very minimal crying. The kid is hungry. I just feel all this pressure from others and the internet that a kid at 12months should not be eating overnight.
