@winniebee: I hear you...I'm actually *okay* with one wakeup, if it's early in the morning (3-5am) but the twice a night wakeups are just not going to fly anymore. I put off doing any sort of weaning or sleep training because she's probably our last, but it's really starting to impact my ability to function on a day-to-day basis.

@bushelandapeck: my son is the same. goes to bed wide awake for naps and bed at least 50% of the time. so he definitely can put himself to sleep just fine. last night was up at 1 and 4....so that was fun. people still say that weaning was the key....i never really wanted to nurse past 1 but of course now that it's close i'm all "hmmm maybe...."

Thanks everyone for your input!
@winniebee: I hope it gets better for you soon too! I'm hoping to not need to wean completely but I know that is a possibility.

@ElbieKay: the funny thing is that she's able to fall asleep completely unassisted for both nap and bedtime (no nursing, rocking, etc) so I feel like she should be able to put herself back to asleep in the MOTN but it doesn't happen. I will pull back in DH this weekend though, and see if it helps.

I did not have a STTN issue but I did have an issue with nursing to sleep. The solution was to have his dad rock him to sleep for a few weeks to break the nursing association. I suggest having your spouse try to soothe the baby in the MOTN for a few weeks.

Following. My son will be 1 in 5 weeks and has slept through approximately 5 times as well. He wakes once at night and nurses back to sleep. Still EBF though. I plan to wean at age 1 so I'm hoping that's the trick.

My 20.5 month old still does not sleep through the night, we're currently in the night weaning process. She used to wake up 5+ times a night, now she wakes up 2-3x! Hoping when she's totally weaned she'll start really sleeping.

My LO didn't STTN until 14 mo. Until then she would occasionally need to be rocked to sleep and OFTEN need me to rock her back to sleep overnight. She didn't eat overnight, she would just wake up and need help getting back to sleep. Then one day she decided she didn't want to be rocked anymore. And also started STTN at the same time. So who knows. Babies are weird.

@snowjewelz: maybe I'm putting her down too late then. We usually go 4 hours between last nap and bed but maybe it should be closer to 3-3.5. Interestingly, she STTN last night with no changes. Although I don't expect it to continue, it certainly was nice!

We never did any sleep training, and she kinda night weaned herself by 9 months. She is almost 11 months, we follow roughly the same schedule and her 2nd nap does go till 4-4:30 some days, but I find that it doesn't affect her night sleep. Her bed time is 7:30-8 and she will sleep till 6-6:30.

LO started STTN on his own at 13.5 months. I literally did nothing--it just happened one night. So don't give up hope! We did not day wean when this happened. And he was not drinking cow's milk.

@bushelandapeck: We started giving her WCM at 12 months and I would nurse in the morning and before bed. Shortly after we cut the MOTN nursing session and DH went in instead of me. She was pissed for a few nights but then stopped waking up finally! Good luck :)

@bushelandapeck: some kids are just naturally wakefull at night, or at least that's what I tell myself My 2 year old hasn't had a night feed in over a year and she STILL very rarely sttn. Maybe 20 times total in the last year, the first time was right when she was a year old. I have literally tried every single sleep tip out there, and it still is what it is.

So it may not be the night feeding that is the issue.

My big girl night weaned and started to STTN at around eighteen months and is still nursing at 3yo so it can be done! In our case it was about making sure A was getting enough calories during the day to ensure she didn't need a night feed (she was dropping daytime nursing sessions but not yet eating enough solids to make up the calories).

I was in the same position. I night weaned at 16 months, and it worked like magic. I think on the 2nd night of no night feedings, he slept through the night. And every night after. Up until then, he'd been up at least once - and often 2 or 3 times - in the night. I didn't want to night wean either, but now I wish I'd done it sooner, because life is SO much easier on a full night's sleep.

My son didn't STTN until 20 months  !! I weaned at 12 months and that helped a lot. I also do not let him nap past 4pm but that's for early morning wake-ups, not MOTN. I did CIO many, many times and still nothing worked. He did not do it until he was ready. And I was so tired for so long. Commiseration, mama!

My friend EBFed and she said her son never STTN until he was walking and weaned to cow's milk, although he got bottles of BM at daycare until her stash was out and I think she let him quickie nurse for bedtime. Before that he was up twice a night to nurse. Everything solidified into a rock solid schedule once he was on one nap. She thinks it was just an EBF thing because it metabolizes faster?
