Just an update in case anyone goes searching for information regarding frequent poops. We finally had the GI appointment today. I can't believe this has been going on since May and I wrote this thread 2 months ago.

After I wrote this we saw the ped twice more. We switched to lactose-free milk for a month. There was some improvement so we started getting a few 'good' days without constant poops. That helped the diaper rash a lot. I think a lot of the difference was due to LO not handling the change well and cutting down his milk consumption a lot.

Blood and stool tests were all normal except slightly low stool pH. I looked up the test online. Apparently I wasn't supposed to collect the sample from a diaper like I did (the lab didn't tell me that) and my collection method could have skewed the numbers. Otherwise the results were all in normal range.

The GI specialist thinks the issue is constipation, holding, or a combination. She prescribed miralax daily for 4-6 months to clear DS out and get rid of any holding habits.

I'm so glad DS doesn't have any more complicated issues but I'm also frustrated that it turned out to be what I originally suspected back in May.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

@anonysquire: omg! I can't believe they are putting your family through that. I take it the meds didn't work? Good thing nobody else has caught it though. Will be thinking of you and hoping the GI gets things on the right track ASAP!

And all I can think of for the rash (we've been here before - it's so rough!)
- daily probiotics
- eating more starchy and slow moving foods (dairy, bananas, applesauce, breads, pasta)
- lots of fluids
- avoid acidic foods, tomatoe-based products, super high fiber foods (chili for example with lots of beans), and fruit juices
- 2-3 10 minute warm soaks in the tub with 2 tbsp of baking soda daily then let him air dry before applying diaper cream
- lots of air time, cover an area with towels
- use your triple paste and in between applications apply desirin like its cake frosting
- avoid baby wipes, just warm water and a gentle cloth

Diarrhea associated with a viral infection usually doesn't last longer than 2 weeks. Given the frequency of the stools as well I'd definitely go back to your ped and ask for stool testing. If those don't point to an infection then maybe a GI referral.

I agree on the GI specialist recommendation. My brother and I both have celiac, and he was a bit like this around that age - Something you may want to consider is an intolerance of some kind.

@2littlepumpkins: he's not!! It's maddening! He's losing weight and his iron levels are really low from blood in his stool. But the ER won't admit him since he has his gastroenterologist appt next week (after 4 months of waiting. Seriously, their waiting list is 4 months out!!!). Anyways, hopefully we get answers next week :)

@Corduroy: that's good. My best guess would be the formula. My kids are/were both FF. But both used Gerber good start and regular formula was an issue. My son even has to have about 4-6 oz reguline. All this to say they are all ok but not necessarily the same.

@Littlebit7: Believe it or not, I actually went through something similar near the end of my pregnancy. I was having pretty severe GI distress for several weeks (not my usual HG, but coming out the other end!). And my GI recommended exactly the same thing: a "GI rest". He told me to eliminate all gluten and dairy from my diet. I kept it up for about 6 weeks and I was healed!

We had that for a while with our daughter, at around 10 months. I had switched to a milk based formula. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what was causing her caustic poops. They were burning her skin. And she had a terrible rash despite me using A&D at every diaper change since birth (I've gone through 72 million gallons of that stuff). Anyway, we put her on a BRAT diet which sort of helped but it wasn't until I did a BRAT diet plus switched to soy formula. That did the trick. My doc described it as a "GI rest". Everything was given a break. I was at my wits end and tried every cream and paste. The doc first treated it like it was fungal, then a mild steroid; nothing helped. We actually ended up staying on the soy until she was about 12 months. I was able to gradually add back in foods, and add back in dairy as well without problems. Good luck. I really truly know how stressful this is!

My DS had this with a dairy allergy. Can you cut out all dairy from your diet and not give formula? Try rice milk or hemp milk instead. Give it 2 weeks. We also had issues with soy, egg, peanuts, and wheat, so good luck!

We had some bad diaper rash and poop episodes and what helped us a lot was A&D ointment and oatmeal baths. For the bath, put some plain oatmeal in a sock or stocking and tie knot, and let it soak into the water. You'll see the water change color. Also baking soda in the bath water too. Put A&D on with every diaper change. It doesn't really treat the rash, but it makes a protective barrier on the skin again the acidy poop. And it makes it easier to wipe off the area.

I also would cut out foods that treat constipation. No prunes or pears.

I don't have much advice but I hope it resolves soon! Just after a year my LO had a bug that messed up his guts for at least 6 weeks, but it began with a pretty clear sickness of puking and diarrhea. After he wasnt sick but his poop took so long to go back to normal I became convinced he had a dairy intolerance or something, we even went to get tested. In the end he went back to normal and I'm not sure any of the probiotics or diet changes did anything to speed it up.

@Corduroy: I see you've already made a call to the pediatrician. In the meantime, I would try stopping the formula. Definitely don't switch to milk. He may be having a reaction to the dairy in the formula.

You may try using a soy formula like Nutramigen for now. I know it's expensive, but it's only for a little bit and could work. Keep in mind, it may take a few days.

Your GI doctor will hear the words "This started not long after we started formula" and will probably recommend the same - but may have better ideas/recommendations on what to try instead.

We had to use Nutramigen for awhile, and I know lots of other people who it's worked wonders for their babies. It's not a cure-all, but if the problem IS his tummy having issues with dairy, it could be a big help. Worth a shot!

@Corduroy: Also, on the diaper rash front. Our miracle cure for bad rashes is Corona cream. I've seen others mention it on here before, but not typically Americans. It's loaded up with lanolin, so you could also try nipple creams.

Any chance the rash has turned into a yeast infection? In which case you will need an anti-fungal to clear it.

@Corduroy: What probiotic are using and how are you trying to give it? We use either Culturelle or Florastar (open the capsule and dump the powder). I will mix the powder in a bit of applesauce and spoon feed. It's worked like a charm every time. The powder doesn't have a taste when mixed into the apple sauce. I've also mixed into yogurt, but if you think dairy might be an issue that's not a great idea.

My LO went through something similar and the doc had also said it was a virus. It lasted maybe a little over a month? She had a rash that looked like a burn with open sores. I stayed home a couple days, put towels and rags all over the house and tried to keep her diaper free as much as possible. I also liked her pack n play with towels. I rinsed her butt with water after each poop. Since none of the diaper creams seemed to work, I used a mixture of diaper cream, yeast cream, mylanta. I think it was probably time that made it better, but I don't know. I treated it like a virus, so toast, rice, etc. The rash marks stayed for a really long time, like 5 + months.

ETA: it also got better and worse for us. I never found out whether it was a real virus or allergies. I had thought it might be food related, but I was never able to figure it out. I think I even started a thread about it.

I'm so sorry. This is not fun. Poor kid.

I would say that yes, he could be scared to poop and not necessarily constipated.

Help me bees, I am out of ideas.

DS has been pooping very frequently for about a month now. Since he poops all the time his butt is so red and sore between the cheeks where the poop sits. Some days the rash is terrible acid rash but most days it's just red. We're washing his bottom and using Triple Paste (daycare) or Desitin, and Aloe (doctor's recommendation but makes LO scream, maybe I picked the wrong kind) at home.

Daycare is doing their best (rinsing, not wiping. applying ointment, frequent changes) but nobody can keep up with constant diaper changes. I've stayed home from work to try and I can't even do it.

I'm out of ideas of what is going on and what I can do to help. I took DS to the pediatrician last Friday and she thought it was a virus. I tried to be patient and wait it out but it's gotten better and worse again since then.

Theories I've had:
Constipation: I was treating it like constipation since LO cries and bears down when he poops. The poops aren't hard, they're normal to soft brown. Just frequent and small. Consistent prunes, pears, extra water - hasn't helped.

Food allergies: He's mainly BF and getting a bottle of formula 1x a day. We introduced formula shortly before this started. I want to try cutting that out but I'm worried swapping with milk will make things worse instead of better. I cut out eggs for two weeks since LO1 was sensitive to them. It has gotten better and then worse again since that time so I am ruling eggs out.

Rash pain: Could his bottom be so irritated that it just hurts to poop so he stops himself?

Teething: LO got his first two teeth about when this all started. He seems like he's going to get the next two very soon.

Anyone else go through this?
