@MrsADS: We also have the "heck no, I'm not tired" crawling, talking/singing, standing marathon when he's actually exhausted and would put his head down immediately if picked up. :bummed:

@MrsADS: Hahaha, K had a thing for sticking his fingers in other babies' mouths for a while - it took a few chomps before he realized he probably shouldn't do that

@snowjewelz OMG that is freaking amazing!!! I hope this will happen with my DS! If I put him in the crib awake he's usually standing up and banging on the bars. I have a feeling if he was just on a mat he would be crawling away!!!

@raspberries yes I have also heard about the peer pressure working! I have high hopes! DS is obsessed with other kids/babies so maybe this will be motivating to him. (Like if we're at church he will immediately crawl over to them, pull up and like, grab their nose or something haha)

Juuuuust to let you know... Don't underestimate them! DD co-sleeps 100%, and even takes naps on our bed, and I lay down with her every night till she falls asleep.

She started daycare at 10 months and after 1-2 weeks of adjusting, she falls asleep by herself, and recently in the toddler room sleeps by herself on a mat without a pacifier (which she still needs at home).

@MrsADS: I think it's a combination - he was learning so much/being stimulated by the new environment that he just passed out when finally given a chance to lay down. And the first few times, I suspect there was a little bit of crying/fussing, but there are 6 kids and 2 caregivers, so they can't always pick up a fussing baby immediately. If both caregivers are taking care of a child when another child gets upset, they talk to them gently to reassure them (but don't pick them up.) But between being ready to zonk out and not getting picked up immediately, I think he just learned how to self-soothe.

Also, K is still in a crib - my daycare doesn't switch to one nap/mats until 15 months. BUT I hear peer pressure plays a huge role in getting all the babies to lay down and nap on their mats at the same time.

@raspberries @polliwog how did your daycares "teach" your LO to fall asleep independently? I am not ok with them letting him cry. Not that I really see that as an option when other kids are trying to sleep! Plus in the 1 year old room (where my LO will be) I don't think they sleep in cribs.

Let daycare do their thing! They totally nap trained my LO. He still breast-sleeps at night and nurses to nap with me, but has no problem going down at daycare or with daddy

No advice, really, but just wanted to let you know that daycare taught my DS how to fall asleep on his own - they put him down in the crib, give him his paci, and he rolls over and falls asleep. It works at bedtime too - it's totally crazy, but it's SO nice. I hope you have as good an experience with daycare sleep!

@fliegepilzhut I'm in the same situation. My Lo is 11 months (will be one on 8/24) and will be starting daycare in the next couple of months (just waiting on the spot to open up). He stays home with a nanny right now.

He's always been a TERRIBLE sleeper. May, June, and July were perhaps the worst 3 months so far with the exception of the NB days. I thought I was going to die. It is a little better now. The last 2 weeks he's done mostly only 1 wake up and sleeps in his crib (although last night was 3 wake ups). He does usually need to nurse AND then be rocked, bounced, etc. to go back to sleep. He can't go to sleep independently.

I don't feel comfortable letting him CIO due to some reflux issues we're still fighting. When we put him in the crib awake, he crawls around, stands up and beats on the crib, talks to himself, etc. for 45 minutes or an hour, and then starts crying. I think it would take him hours to fall asleep. And then he's so overtired.

He sleeps in a sleep sack which helps for sure, also still takes a paci at night and naps, and we also introduced a little lovey, which he doesn't seem to care about when he goes down but sometimes when I go to get him when he wakes up he's holding it.

I have no idea how he will nap at daycare because our nanny will rock him to sleep in his dark nursery with his sound machine. And that won't happen at daycare. But everyone says they "get it" on their own, so I am hoping that will happen for us!

Last option! LO started faycare at 11 mo and was on 2 naps sleeping in her zippy and they got her on one nap and no zippy! We weaned it at home a little bit later (did naps first then nighttime). This is what they do for their job! Good luck :)

@FliegepilzHut: Ah, I see.. Poor buddy needs to learn to work with those hands! Then maybe I would work on falling asleep in the crib. Drowsy but awake never worked for me. I had to rip off the bandaid and LO had to cry a bit. He still needs his white noise, wubbanubs (2 of them) and his sleep sack. I feel for you, sleep is so hard!

I would try a regular Halo sleep sack. Arms are out but feet are still in. The startle reflex should be long gone, right? I plan on keeping DS in a sleep sack as long as he's in his crib. I swear he starts to yawn the moment I put it on.

Let the teachers work their magic! LO is 13 months and has always been a terrible napper (slept on us, woke up after 40 minutes if not) but at daycare starting around 10 months they could put her down awake and she sleeps 2-3 hours. It's made her a better napper at home, too, although she's still not great.

Right now, DS's sleep leaves a few things to be desired...but on the upside, it seems to be getting BETTER! For one, he's getting better and better at connecting sleep cycles and getting easier to put down at night. On the other hand, he still does need help (bouncing, swaying) to get drowsy before he can be put down in his crib, still wears a Zipadeezip for nighttime and naps, and still co-sleeps/"breastsleeps" at night.

For the purpose of starting his first "school" experience in about a week...what is the shortterm goal I should be working on? Falling asleep in his crib with less assistance? Falling/staying asleep without his Zippy? Or should I just focus on him being a well-rested and happy soul on his first day and hope that his teachers can work some magic, because they aren't his mama??? :silly:
