@septca: If i recall correctly, i basically let her cry/scream until 6am. I knew that she wouldn't go back to sleep no matter what i did (nursing, patting, rocking, etc.) so i just started the day at 6am. It usually meant that she would cry for about 30-45 minutes (on/off) but i felt i had to teach her that i wasn't going to come in and get her right away!

My LO had already transitioned to 1 nap at that point and we had also moved her bedtime earlier. I think we eventually got to a point where she started waking up at 7-7:30!

Sorry, i don't think my experience was what you wanted to hear!

@Freckles: How did you get her to stop???

We are also dealing with the walking sleep regression. DD used to sleep 7:30-7:00/7:30, but for the last couple of weeks has been up at 5:45/6:00. If I nurse her, she will go right back to sleep until 7:00/7:30, but the early wake-up is killing *me.* We've tried an earlier bedtime, but it made no difference. I can't bring myself to sleep train (which we have done successfully in the past) because 6:00 seems like a normal time to wake up, but she clearly needs the extra sleep. I don't think she is ready to transition to one nap quite yet (we've tried, but it's a mess). Gah!

@edelweiss: ha yup we're in an apt too...I don't even think about our neighbors tho, lol (mean I know...). I worry more about DH, who is so cranky when he gets woken up!

Another HB member suggested that his early wakeups might be a sign that he is ready to transition...plus I figure it usually happens sometime around 16-18 months and can be a long process so might as well start now! :)

@hilsy85: thanks for your response! man, these "phases" are killer. i would let him CIO more but he is pretty loud these days and i worry about bothering our neighbors (we live in an apartment). it's times like this where i wish we had a house. not that CIO would necessarily work...

i hope the transition helps! is he showing signs of dropping a nap?

@edelweiss: hey there! So unfortunately, this was just a phase for us...I ended up kind of just doing whatever I needed to do to get through it. I kept trying to let him fuss/cry a little bit before I went in there, and then all of a sudden at 13.5 months, after a typical night where he cried for 5 min at 4:30, and then went back to sleep, he started STTN on his own! Like STTN for real--7-6/615am. So basically I have no idea what this funky period was about, but it did end.

Unfortunately, we are back to early morning wakeups now at 15 months :( It has been around 530/545 for the last week, and it's never no later than 6. I think I am going to attempt the transition to 1 nap to see if that helps.

@hilsy85: hey there! i was wondering how things worked out with your LO's sleep? we've had a weird period of LO sometimes waking up and screaming (not just fussing) at random times of night and it takes 2 hours to get him back down. plus the early morning wakeups. i was wondering whether this turned out to be a phase for your LO, and if so, how long was the phase, and what (if anything) you did proactively to help LO get past it? thanks in advance!

@hilsy85: L did this too somewhat at 12.5 months. She was waking up at 5am religiously and sometimes at 4.30. After she was walking properly and running/.climbing, things improved. It took about 7 weeks though!

Also, thanks to daylight savings she woke up at 4.45 today so we are kinda back to square one. I got nothing for ya.

Miss A doesn't sleep through the night but she has nights where she's awake at one and nights when she sleeps till 5 before waking. To be honest I think little people have so much going on developmentally (teeth, walking, language) that it's no wonder they have trouble sleeping! My other thought is night terrors?

i'm in a comparable situation and can commiserate. we started with LO's wakeup time being around 5:30am (i know, we get up early in these parts) when he was 3 months. starting around 4 months, he would wake up anywhere from 4am-5am. it was brutal. being a veteran of CIO, i didn't pick him up until 5am in the hopes that he would "get it" that he wasn't supposed to wake up until at least 5am. i thought it was a phase, and his wakeup time would vary quite a bit, but now at 9.5 months i realize that this is a real issue and not a phase.

i spoke to a sleep consultant briefly and she thinks nap deprivation at daycare makes his body being too much in awake mode, leading him to not be able to fall back asleep when his sleep cycle ends around the 4am mark. i don't know how much to believe it, but in any case i am in sleep adjustment quicksand right now.

maybe it's the increased walking?

Charlie is almost 15 mos and still wakes up 3/4 times a week crying/whimpering. Usually goes right back to sleep within a minute or two, but occasionally it takes 5-10 mins. I only go in if it sounds like he's really upset or not feeling well, and that's rare. Most of the time I just let him cry and he falls back asleep. He's been walking since 9 mos so that isn't it for us. I'm sorry I don't have any great recommendations but I do hope it stops soon!!

LO is 12.5 months old and I am at my wit's end with his sleep...at 11.5 mos, he started STTN for the most part for like a week--he would sleep from 7/730 to 5, wake up and cry for maybe 2 minutes, and the go back to sleep til 6/630. I thought the crying at 5 would stop eventually...but no. It's gotten worse. Now, he'll wake up anywhere from 1-4, and SCREAM as if someone is ripping his hair out. Sometimes he stops after 5 minutes, only start again 10 minutes later (right as I"m falling back to sleep). Sometimes he'll just keep going for 10 minutes, and I'l go in and nurse him. Sometimes he'll go back to sleep after 2 minutes.

After that, he will sometimes sleep til 530/6, or sometimes he'll wake up again between 4 and 5 and do the same thing. I am going crazy. I am exhausted from being woken up by screaming several times at night, and frustrated because I have NO idea what to do about it. I don't think he's hungry, as he is definitely able to go 11 hours without eating. I don't think it's teething, because this has been going on about 3 weeks and I see NO signs of teeth, nor is he any fussier at all during the day.

I have no problem letting him CIO, except that I would expect that to help him STTN after a few days of CIO--and he's not.

We're trying an earlier bedtime tonight to see if that helps. Any other ideas? Or commiseration?
