It's normal. I have been blessed with a poor sleeper, sometimes he does great with the nap routine and goes down without a peep, other times he cries.

WRT to the swaddle, I read somewhere else you use the miracle blanket, that never worked for me. I used a little stretchy Kiddopotomus (now summer infant) swaddle pouch with the wings you can velcro. If he can bust out of that, which my son did at 6 months when we moved up to a larger size, then he's ready not to be swaddled.

I also agree not to pick him up. Just try to tell him quietly that you are there, in the other room, etc. Lay your hand on his back and gently pat him.

Good luck!

I know at day care they try not to pick the kids up but rather pat their backs or rock the cribs a bit to help them self soothe. Good luck!

My 12 week old is suddenly protesting when put down to sleep! We have been trying to ease him into soothing himself when it's nap time and bed time. He has been doing so well... just last week, he would go down for his naps without a peep! I just swaddle him and place him in his crib and he usually falls asleep within minutes... then suddenly this week he would fuss and cry... sometimes more and sometimes less.. but after 15 minutes or so I would go in and pick him up to soothe him until he is really sleepy (otherwise he would protest again as soon as I put him down)... I'm thinking maybe he doesn't want to be swaddled? But when he is not swaddled, he can't fall asleep because his hands would always bother his face... I'm also thinking maybe he is more aware now so he wants to play more? or be held more? I don't want to develop bad habits... but I don't know what else to do to help him sleep...??
