My LO slept 14 hours from about 6-8 months...and her bedtime was 5:30 which made it hard for my husband to see her. People thought we were crazy putting her to bed so early but she always slept 13-14 hours...then around 9 months she started playing in her crib at bedtime regularly so we kept her up longer and her bedtime got pushed later...now at 14 months her bedtime is 7:00 and she wakes up at 7:00

I would stick with an 8pm bedtime again tonight and see what happens. For my LO if this happened, it usually was a one night fluke and she would be back to schedule the next day.

olive has slept 14 hours many, many times... more often when she was a little younger (6:30-8:30am). now she sleeps 12-13 hours at night because her bedtime is later and she can stay up longer in between naps. 14 hours is normal so count yourself lucky and hope it happens regularly! :)

@Bao: I think the worst thing you could do is not try at all :) At least if you try and fail, you tried and as you said adjust as necessary for your LO.

@cascademom: I'm going to try it too, the worst that can happen is they wake up earlier, and then you could adjust it accordingly the next night.

@Bao: Interesting articles. We're still coping with an 8:30pm bedtime. Since we have a bit of change of plans today, I'm tempted to try an earlier bedtime with my LO.

@winniebee: I may have to give it a try again tonight then, since he's already on the same schedule as yesterday nearly. He took a nap around ten and woke a little before eleven. Like I said, maybe I'm in the wrong, not him.

@Bao: Thanks for those!

@NaturallyCathy: A lot of sleep experts advocate a super early bedtime (5:30-6:30)! My son doesn't seem to wake up any earlier when we put him down earlier

@Bao: That's partly what I'm wondering. Have I been doing him a disservice by letting him stay up until he's absolutely knackered or should I have been putting him to bed earlier and making him stay down? I remember watching Mad Men when I was pregnant with Henry and thinking it weird that the kids went to bed at like six but maybe there's something to that?

@Sammyfab: I'm not really complaining, so much as this has never happened before. I seriously thought for a minute (and this is mostly due to pregnancy brain) that something was wrong with him. Maybe because he didn't make a peep or stir or anything, he wasn't breathing? Again, he's nearly a year old so there's no reason to think this, it's just never happened before.

Amazing!

My son usually sleeps 10 hours on the button overnight (7-5). Last weekend he slept from 6:45-7:30 am. He whined at 5:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. but when I checked on him he was still thinking. I think he was not feeling well, but it was unheard of!

I'm not quite sure what you're panicking about? It sounds like Henry had an awesome night and everyone got a ton of rest. It doesn't sound like something to be worried about! :-)

ETA: my LO used to be in bed around 5:30/6 for a few months and now at 11 months he goes to bed at 6:30/7. We never hear a peep from him until morning and it has been that way since 5.5/6 months save a couple of instances but we never needed to intervene. I love early bedtimes and keeping him on a schedule for my own sanity!

@NaturallyCathy: I posted a similar topic yesterday about earlier bed times...Hmmm...this is very interesting! It makes me think maybe LO's do need to go down a bit earlier than we think, to get a more restful nights sleep.

Let me preface this by saying we've never kept Henry to a sleep schedule. Whenever he starts acting tired, we put him down for a nap and we let him sleep as long or as little as he wants. The only exception to this is we do try to have him in bed before eight o'clock, just so DH and I can have some quiet time together before bed (usually around nine or ten o'clock).

Yesterday, LO woke up around eight. He had a nap around ten, woke around eleven. He had another nap around one, woke up around three. (I was actually able to sneak a nap in from two to three, it was glorious!) Then he started acting fussy around five thirty. I didn't think anything of it, figured he just needed a cat nap to recharge before playing for a few more hours. So I put him to bed. And waited.

And waited... and waited... and waited. I began to think around six thirty that perhaps I should wake him up but I figured I'd give it a few more minutes. Surely he'd wake up on his own. Then the clock edged toward seven and I started thinking, 'Why wake him now? His normal bed time would be in an hour and I'd never get him back down. Besides, he's sure to wake himself soon!' Oh how wrong I was. My husband got home a little after nine and Henry was -still- asleep. Not only that but he slept through the noise of DH getting his heavy work boots off, taking the baby gate off the doorway (which squeeks really loud), me changing the temperature on our thermostat a few times (loud beeps right next to his bedroom)... In fact, he slept until a little after seven thirty this morning. Without a single peep! Which is unheard of!

He didn't do one of his whimper sleep cries, he didn't rustle in his crib, he didn't wake me for a bottle around midnight or five thirty (which he's been known to do, one or the other), he didn't do anything! He slept for fourteen hours straight!

Now, I realize that there may be some outside factors - the weather (we had a cold front push through last night that gave both DH and I a headache), he could be going through a growth spurt, teething, etc - but has anything this ever happened to you? And did it freak you out? When I woke myself at seven thirty, his usual wake up time, I was starting to panic a little and was about to go wake him up!

Or maybe I'm going about this all wrong and what he really needs is just an earlier bedtime for us to get through the night without waking? What do you think? Do you put your one year old to bed early? Do they sleep through the night without a peep? Am I overreacting? (The answer to the last one is yes, by the way...)
