About a month ago his teacher said "he's starting to talk to us!" which shocked me, because he's been a huge chatterbox at home for months. It makes sense since she's more comfortable at home. My son is 2 and *doesnt stop* talking at home. But I can guarantee if he was in daycare/preschool, he would be really quiet. My youngest (now 19 months) would talk more at school than at home. I think you're right - she is just getting a little more shy. She watches everything. For instance, he won't say what a sheep says when a new person is in the room, but the second they walk out, he's suddenly "baa"-ing tons. Some kids are more observational, too. She may just be taking it all in and will talk when she's ready. I worried at first, but I *know* he loves school and that he's thriving there. She has been in daycare full-time from 3 months, but she did just start this new classroom in August. She is the youngest, probably the smallest, and still learning to walk, so I'm wondering if she's intimidated or stressed somehow? I'm not worried so much about her development (she waves at strangers all the time, though she's gotten a little more shy lately) but more worried about whether she is possibly stressed or uncomfortable at school? He has similar verbal skills as your LO (and signs), but his teachers rarely see him do either. Is she shy around new people? LO is really shy around new people and his teachers say it's really common for shy kids to be quiet at first and that he should warm-up. Is she in school full-time? Is this a new class? He started his school in September (2 days a week) and they said they expected him to be acting like his usual self in a couple of months. He's definitely gotten better as the months have passed! </p> <p>His teachers tell us the same thing about him obviously taking everything in and understands almost everything they say -- they also laugh because at pick-up he immediately runs over and says "Mama! She started talking early and we've stopped counting words, but she is will ask for things with words before using signs, knows all her animal sounds and basic body parts, imitates what we say all the time (and will repeat it later), and babbles to herself constantly while playing alone or talking to family. </p> <p>HOWEVER, she apparently will not talk AT ALL with her teachers at school! Her teachers say she obviously understands everything they say, but she won't talk when they ask her questions or otherwise (except sometimes talking about the "babies" in the infant room, but "baby" is her favorite word). She'll start talking away and usually respond to questions as soon as I'm there to pick her up.</p> <p>Should I be worried? She seems perfectly happy at school otherwise, and she is the youngest one in her class...</p> <p>Any insights? </p>
