@thepicklemonster: first of all your doing great! I know it can be daunting but your doing everything you can for your DS. My DS has been diagnosed with autism and honestly I'm still iffy about the diagnosis but regardless he's doing Speech right now and we'll be getting OT at some point in the future when it's not waitlisted. He'll be two in a week and he's right about where your 14 month old is. He's only been in speech for a month but I can already tell a difference in his receptive language. I know it's really hard, like really hard but comparing him will only depress you. I have JUST FINaLLy come to term with "he'll get there when he's ready" and it's honestly like I can breathe a sigh of relief! Chin up mama your doing amazing
Also if you have any questions or anything I'm all ears!

Props to you for doing the evaluation! DS has speech delays and I was fairly ambivalent about it until a few months after his 2nd birthday when I realized he hadn't made any progress and had less than 30 words, with only 5 consistently used.

So I got him evaluated and no surprise, he was in the 2nd percentile. I still wish I had gotten him in earlier.

He's about to age out of Early Intervention and will be attending the speech therapy preschool. He has caught up a bit and is now just 6 months delayed. So ours has been a slow but steady progression.

@catlady: I don't want to threadjack, but my LO had pretty serious feeding delays, too. Send me a message if you want to chat about it! It's so stressful. He's 4 now and doing great. He still has some sensory things in terms of not liking pureed or mushy textured food, but mostly you'd never know that he didn't learn to chew food until after 2.

My LO2 is 12 months and when we recently got him evaluated for Early Intervention (specifically for feeding delays), we were surprised that he qualified for receptive language as well. Like your LO, he does not wave or point, doesn't respond when we ask "where is mama?" or whatever, and his only word is "uh oh".

I say we were surprised that he qualified in that area because I'm pretty sure my LO1 was the exact same way at that age, but we didn't think/realize she was behind so we never got her evaluated. I don't know exactly when she caught up but she definitely had a language explosion around 17 or 18 months and by 2 years, she was ahead (she is now newly 4 and is starting to read on her own).

It is really scary and stressful but you are doing a great job by getting him evaluated and starting him in EI now. In our case, our little guy's feeding delays are so bad that we are focusing everything in that area and not even bothering working on the receptive language stuff. So I can't speak to that but I totally get feeling down about this type of thing. We just have to keep reminding myself that we are doing the best we can for our LOs and that they will eventually catch up.

DD (who is 13 months) doesn't wave or point and so far her only word is "Uh-oh" and her only expressive statement is shaking her head no. We mentioned to our pediatrician that we were seeing much of those things at the 12 month appointment (which happened at 12.5 months) and she wasn't concerned at all. I do remember with my son (who is 5) that a language explosion happened at 15 months and it seemingly happened overnight. There is a part of me that worries about my daughter and her development but I'm trying to follow my doctor's lead and not stress about it. I do think there is a wide range of normal.

Hey mama! We had the exact same issue. First, give yourself credit for seeing a delay and helping your babe. I know it can seem scary at first or discouraging. Especially when they start throwing out numbers to compare your child to. I promise it gets so much better. Once the therapy starts (if approved) you'll see your child making endless bounds, large and small. You'll want to cheer after everything. DS was 2 and had less than 10 words in his vocabulary. It killed me but he's now 3 and will NOT stop talking. Hang in there, it gets better! We have an EI thread going too if you'd like to join.

My DH and I were just talking about this. My youngest is also 14 months and we are amazed by how much he understands and tries to say. My oldest was exactly like your LO but had feeding issues too which put his speech delay on the back burner. Plus as first time parents we had no clue. He is 5 now and fine. He had a major speech explosion around 2.5 where he went from barely putting 2 words together to full sentences. Obviously it is better if you get help early, but at this point I wouldn't stress too much! Kids develop at different rates and the range for normal is huge. Good luck!

Eta the reason I mentioned my youngest is that if he were born first, we would have been freaking out over how delayed our oldest was. I even specifically told DH that I would have been thinking he was autistic.

@bhbee: We don't think it's hearing-related because he definitely turns to noise and looks when you say his name. Thanks for the response!

Have you had hearing evaluated? I know they were worried about speech delays for my son before he got tubes, it just made me wonder. It’s so hard when you don’t know what will happen, sending you hugs

This is mostly just a vent and looking for support/reassurance. My DS is 14 months old and doesn't point or wave. His only word is "daddy" and he doesn't really say it meaningfully. He doesn't respond to any questions/instructions or really gesture in any way, aside from clapping which he just started recently. He is smiley, happy and very social, and loves to mimic and babble. I was worried about his progress compared to some of my friends' babies the same age (who are able to do things like "get the ball," "show me daddy," body parts etc) so I mentioned it to my ped and she encouraged me to get him evaluated for early intervention.

We had the evaluation on Saturday and she said he is delayed in every category especially language, where he's at like an 8 month level. (He isn't walking yet either but he cruises and crawls, so I'm not too worried about gross motor.) She said she didn't see any red flags for autism or anything serious, just a delay. I know it could be so much worse and I'm glad there are no red flags, but I'm feeling disappointed and worried he will never catch up.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm feeling down and would appreciate any words of encouragement.
