I worried about this same thing with my son (who is now 2). He was also late with banging objects together, but he was born with torticollis so lagged a bit behind with some of the fine motor skills, he also preferred one side of his body (from the torticollis) so I was worried. But he finally clapped at 13.5 months!

I think as long as she's banging two objects together, she's fine, but if by 15 months she isn't clapping or pointing, I would probably call EI just to be on the safe side (especially if you're continuing to worry about it).

@pinkb: I think your statement about not even writing it down is actually a really good example of how this isn't a big deal.

As long as your child isn't way behind in multiple things then you can't stress about every little action they do. Some things they will do sooner then others their age and some things they will do later.

I can't think of an adult who can't clap so I'm sure it will happen eventually! DS1 was a late pointer and clapper. He figured it out and is fine! I know it is a milestone but what is the concern if they are late with it?

I was so worried about DD because she didn't clap. I think it was finally between 14 and 16 months that she finally did, sorry I am a bad mom and didn't write it down. I just know that I was so worried that one night I was venting to DH about it and DD was crawling around and she got mad about something... So mad that she started clapping her hands out of frustration. I was so caught up in my worry and venting that I didn't wen realize it at first! Some kids just do things later, DD has alsways been on the late side(walked at 18 months). But mommas are always gonna worry.

Thanks, ladies. She does wave, but only at strangers when we are out. I clap all day long for her and I can see her trying to do it- just hasn't gotten there yet. She does throw her arms up when she's excited. She doesn't point either but that doesn't bother me as much. I don't know, I'm a SAHM so I just feel like it's something I'm doing/not doing.

My guy is 12.5mo and doesn't clap. He clapped one time, weeks ago, never again since. I'm not worrying about it though since he points, waves, high fives.. I wish he would clap though just because clapping is fun! :)

I wouldn't worry about it. I feel like not all kids do all the same stuff at the same time. My LO is 14 mo and she claps but doesn't point-- which I know most kids her age do. But she knows what stuff is (if I say "go get me the ball" she will-- but if I say "point to the ball" she just stares at me). So I feel like she's fine. Maybe she heard it is rude to point and she's just super polite? Lol I dunno I don't think its a big deal.

Oh my goodness, I remember this! My son would do lots of other things (he was walking at 10 months) but would not clap for anything for the longest time.

One day Dora was on TV and she was clapping and he did it. Yup, he would clap for Dora but not for mama, haha

If she's doing other things, has a good grasp, hand/eye, etc., I wouldn't be concerned. Play Pat-a-Cake, hold her hands and clap for different things like PP suggested. She'll get it!

I wouldn't be concerned and would just try to do it more often in front of her/with her like hey look at me, clapping is so fun! :) Clap for her after every diaper change, clap along to music, etc.

Does she point, wave, or do any other signs? Bang objects together?

My LO will be 14 months next week and she still will not clap. She definitely shows interest- she'll hold my hands and clap them together and she can bang two objects together. I spoke to the doctor at her 12 month appointment and she didn't seem that concerned so I just kind of let it go and figured she will just do it when she's ready, but I took her to a story/music time yesterday and babies much younger than her were clapping. Any one else have a late clapper? Am I just being an overly paranoid first time mama or should I be concerned?
