At that age you are worried about losing driving privileges or nor being able to see friends. I will say, I don't think anyone is saying "she is just a kid" as an excuse - it is clear that mental illness is at play here which was probably exacerbated by her age and how that affects how her brain processed what was happening and how to handle it. No one knew she was pregnant. While she was in labor, she locked herself in a stall and a few concerned students checked on her as they were using the bathroom and she told them she was fine "just sick". She ended up giving birth and losing massive amounts of blood. By the time anyone found her, she couldn't be revived. She had no pulse and was not breathing. Her brain literally isn’t done developing so she doesn’t have all the forethought, options and rational thinking that an adult has. Yes she knows right from wrong, but I doubt she premeditated it for months, or is evil, or is a hateful person. She’s a kid and kids do stupid, impulsive things. That doesn’t excuse what she did, and it’s terrible and sad; but I also don’t think it’s that shocking that a child, faced with the mental and physical trauma of giving birth to a child after keeping the pregnancy a complete secret from her entire family would do something violent and extreme. I do feel badly for her. Stories like this are why I have absolutely zero issues with birth control (including the morning after pill) being available at schools without parental consent. If she came from a stable, loving, *involved* family; I doubt she would have ended up pregnant at 13 or 14, especially without anyone knowing, or frankly, caring about whether she was pregnant or not. How in the hell can a girl be pregnant with a 9lb baby and her mom not know she is pregnant??? I am 31 weeks, and the baby websites say my daughter weighs about 3.5 lbs in there - and it is beyond obvious that I am pregnant!!! I can't imagine what I would look like if she was almost triple the size she is right now. The story is just INSANE and doesn't add up. And of course, it's just gut-wrenching and unimagineable. I can see being 14 years old and scared or afraid of consequences, but even at 14 years old- you know the difference between right and wrong, murder and life. And you have to be pregnant for a LONG-ass time.
