Was the comment on Buzzfeed about haw flakes coming from a hawthorn plant sarcastic? I thought the "haw" was the transliteration of shrimp?

I didn't know #15 was a snack... I eat them when I'm nauseous! They always make me feel better. Although I wonder if that is a Pavlovian response that my parents have instilled in me! My husband said it doesn't help his nausea though it could just be that they were too weird for him.

Yakult is OBSCENELY popular in Mexico. My son loves it and my husband has one every day (we are not Asian). The vet even told me to give it to my dog when she was sick to her stomach. I am not a fan, I have to say... but I guess it has a lot of good bacteria!

@loveisstrange: No, I'm a green tea lover too--everything from the tea bags from the grocery store to loose whole leaves to tea ceremony matcha--and the Japan-ified American candies are nothing like that. They're still pretty good!

If you want the matcha taste, you probably have to get the fancy Japanese candy called "wagashi" usually sold in specialty shops in Japan. Here's an idea of what I mean: http://www.japan-talk.com/jt/new/18-Japanese-desserts-the-Emperor-might-eat I think most traditional Japanese sweets were meant to be eaten as an accompaniment to matcha, so they tend to have other flavors, adzuki/bean paste is really common (and so, so delicious!), but there are some tea-flavored ones too. Japan is on my very short list of countries in the world where I would never pass up a local dessert or candy. The other two are Switzerland and France. :)

I've tried 5, 8, 9. Attending Indian weddings, it's fun to try the snacks in the bags. They didn't include the baked or fried dal (lentils) chips. DH and I consumed a bag of them together on the way home from a wedding.

Pocky, Hello Panda, Toppo, shrimp chips, and straight up dried shrimp/fish are the quintessential Japanese snack foods to me. I really wish that the bottled/canned teas, especially Royal Milk Tea, were more readily available in the States. I think Calpis would be a hit, too, although they might want to rename it for the American market...
