Our neighbour's little one JUST started drinking milk at 4.5! He would sometimes drink homemade almond milk, but that was it. The mom is a nutritionist, and wasn't concerned, precisely because of what your ped said. They always ensured that he was getting nutrients in other foods!

My LO wouldn’t drink any milk at that age either. She would eat a ton of yogurt and cheese though, so our pediatrician wasn’t concerned since she was getting calcium from other sources.

I don’t know if your LO goes to daycare, but the “peer pressure” (meant in a positive way) of daycare is what got her drinking milk! They eat family style and everyone drinks milk or water at lunch. Well, E saw all of her buddies drinking milk day after day and finally, she started asking for milk and drinking it too!!

Now at 27 months she drinks a lot of milk, whereas at 15 months I thought for sure we would have a non-milk-drinker.

I never drank milk growing up myself, and still don’t drink it at all (not even in coffee or on cereal!)

My LO would literally throw a cup of milk across the room if we gave it to him. A sip was a victory. It turns out he is allergic to dairy, although we had this same problem with any type of milk.

He does like smoothies though. No real recipe, just some berries, almond milk, maybe some yogurt. Bananas or avocados help the consistency be a lot smoother. You can throw spinach in there too!

DD1 is 26 months and still won't touch milk, with the exception being that she will take it mixed in with her morning cereal (she has Weetbix, sort of like shredded wheat, with prunes, so the milk isn't noticeable as it all gets mixed in together to make a porridge type consistency). We've tried everything to get her to drink it - every type of milk imaginable, we've served it warm, cold, hot, with chocolate, with sugar, in a straw cup, in a sippy cup, in a proper cup etc (she's never taken a bottle so no point in trying that) and she just flat out refuses. She also won't eat yogurt, ice cream, smoothies, or cheese on its own (she will eat grilled cheese, pizza, and pasta with cheese melted through), so we really struggle with the calcium component!

Our GP said not to worry as calcium accumulates throughout childhood and if they don't get enough as toddlers, it's not a foregone conclusion they'll suffer from calcium deficiency their whole life. She gave me a list of other calcium rich foods to incorporate into DD's very limited diet (she is the world's pickiest eater although she's finally starting to get a bit better!) and said not to worry about it, so I haven't. I did feel reassured though knowing that calcium builds up over time and is not absolutely essential on a consistent basis... :-)

@maybebaby: I did ~4oz milk, two large dollops of greek yogurt, half a banana, and whatever fruit I had handy. I also often added two big handfuls of spinach.

Once we cut his bottle at 18 months, he refused milk from all sorts of cups. Our cabinet is filled with different cups that we would try. He'll be 2 at the end of the month and still refuses to drink any milk. He loves cheese and yogurt though, so we stick with that.

My LO didn't drink ANY milk until 19 months. Then it was liek a switch flipped and he loves it now (I also weaned at 18.5 months so I wonder if that had something to do with it...). You can try other milks, or milk in smoothies, but honestly, I really wouldn't worry! As long as he's getting nutrients from other sources, he's fine :)

We are still nursing once before bed and he drinks water throughout the day, but after bottle weaning cold turkey (in consultation with ped), he does not and will not drink milk from a star cup, sippy cup, open cup, nada. He eats plenty of yogurt and cheese and ped says as long as that and water intake is good, not to worry about it...but I still do! Anyone else's kid? Or any tips on getting him to drink milk? He's not a "great" eater either, but his weight gain is fine, so we're rolling with it...
