@lulabee sleep sack. We've had to be super super consistent. It's so hard.

@MrsADS: Our situations are very similar. I'm so glad the Ferber method is working for you- I've decided we are starting tonight. I think she needs to be put to sleep awake, but I'm not looking forward to it. She also gets HYSTERICAL and yells for me.. it breaks my heart. Part of our issue is that we haven't been consistent. Also, her older sister is in the room next door so I always want to go to my youngest in the middle of the night so she doesn't wake her sister. Did you keep him in his sleep sack or start using a blanket? She uses a blanket at school but at home she flip flops so much- but I know I sleep better with a heavy blanket on me so maybe that might be something we need to try.

It was me - you can read my posts here. We were in sleep hell.
http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/help-16-month-old-up-for-hours-at-night

Like up for 4 hours in the middle of the night with a screaming baby. We both work full time and LO was a total exhausted wreck during the day.

Anyway, we were pretty anti-CIO and we had tried in the past and it went horribly, so I was not really on board.

However, something had to give -for all of us. I took him to the pediatrician again to just check that he didn't have an ear infection or anything else weird going on. Our ped gave him a really thorough exam and said he seemed healthy, which gave me confidence. She also told me (re: sleep training) that to think of it that you're not doing it for YOUR sleep (the parents' sleep), although that is a benefit. You're doing it for your LO's health and development. They cannot grow and learn like they are supposed to if they are up all night, and he is going to get sick with no sleep.

That gave us the push we needed to try something. We decided to do Ferber CIO (with checks). I cannot tell you how much I did not want to do this. My LO would not sleep in bed with us, will only sleep if we rock him in the glider and lay him down asleep in the crib.

We also implemented a very structured bedtime routine EVERY NIGHT. AND we talked to him about it A LOT.

Anyway, so we did the ferber CIO - I had to have my husband 100% on board because I knew I would not be able to listen to him cry.

Night #1, we did our bedtime routine. Leading up to bedtime, we talked all about how tonight, we were going to have milk, read books, snuggle, say our prayer, then daddy will rock you in the glider, then you're going to lay down in your crib and go to sleep like a big boy, but mama and daddy are just down the hall, and we're going to check on you, mama and daddy always come back.... (we say this every night a few times).

We laid him down, of course he immediately stood up and started SOBBING, like hysterical. It was awful, awful. My husband stayed upstairs with him, I put headphones in and washed dishes so I didn't have to hear it. I think he did 4 checks that first night.

He cried off and on for about an hour before falling asleep, which is WAY better than I anticipated. He woke up at 12 and 4 that night, and at 12 we had to go in and do a check after 5 min of crying, but he went to sleep. At 4 he cried for 5 minutes and went back to sleep.

Night 2 he cried less than 5 minutes and went to sleep.

This was about a week ago and since then we've continued to have success, although he still starts SCREAMING as soon as we put him in his crib for the night - he just only cries a little bit. :crying: Honestly it's still hard, but it has been a life saver for us.

@LulaBee: I had some success replacing nursing to sleep with rocking around that age. You could try it! It helped the first few wake ups where he wanted to nurse immediately

@edelweiss: Thanks- I'll search for that thread. And you're right, she needs to fall asleep on her own. :meh:

@LulaBee: there was a recent thread on here from someone whose baby was having a lot of sleep issues. she got a lot of feedback and she started sleep training so that her baby learned to fall asleep on its own at the beginning of the night. sounds like it made a world of difference, and was not too bad!

ultimately you have to do what works for you, and that is a changing game/definition. it sounds like trying to put her to bed while she's sleeping has stopped working, and it may be worth trying again to get her to fall asleep on her own.

but that's just my two cents, and i support whatever you do that helps you all get some better rest. good luck!

are you putting her down while she is awake or asleep? i doubt she needs that much milk at that hour, especially if you just nursed her--sounds like she is using the sucking to comfort herself, and at some point she needs to learn how to self-soothe. however you sleep train her is up to you--if straight up CIO is not working for you, there is ferber and lots of other methods.

My 15 month old is not STTN. Which is fine, she's still breastfeeding, I know kids do this at their own rate. HOWEVER. She wakes up as soon as I lay her down in her crib. Last night she woke up after I nursed her, so I sent her dad in (she usually freaks out and calls for me until he gives her a bottle). He ended up giving her 3 bottles after I nursed her (4 oz each). She can't be that hungry, right? She eats decently for 3 meals and snacks, plus nurses 2-3 times a day.

She's been sick recently (pneumonia) and that totally disrupted her sleep, so I guess I need help getting her back on track. We have tried CIO when she's not sick and she will scream for hours.

She will occasionally only wake once and nurse and go back to sleep but there is no rhyme or reason. She goes to daycare and her naps can vary there but she usually gets one 1.5 hour nap.

This is a very disjointed post and I'm sorry. I'm tired. Help me help my kid sleep.
