@buffalove: even the learning tower doesn't help when they want mama. They become little limp noodles when you try to put them in the learning tower and they don't want to be in it!

@mediagirl: dinner time is the worst at my house too! it makes me want to invest in a $200 learning tower just so I don't have to try to hold him and cook at the same time.

@SeptMomma12: lol, yes - learning to say "more", "ba" (sippy cup), or pointing to the snack cabinet have been very helpful in my house!

My 20-month-old is exactly like that. I don't have any advice except to hang in there... When he throws himself on the floor and tantrums I just leave him and let him finish it. It's not fun watching him do it but he'll learn. He used to tantrum like that MULTIPLE times a day. It's better now at once a week? Maybe? I realized that he does that when he gets frustrated so whenever he comes to me for something I give him 100% of my attention to figure out what it is that he needs or wants. Or he does it b/c I won't let him do something or play with something. He's VERY stubborn... (like his mama! :P ) There are days when I just sit there and am at a loss for words or what to do... And then my oldest throws a tantrum at the same time. Yay! Crying all around the house, including myself! I think once he's walking well (my youngest walked at 14 months) it'll get better b/c he can get most things himself then. Hang in there... I do want to say it gets better. My oldest NEVER did this... but he's really tough now at 4.5. We can't win, can we? ;)

@buffalove: I have a feeling that's a big part of it. He knows what he wants but his language hasn't caught up. If only he would concentrate less on saying "Elmo" and more on saying "milk" or "water"!!! ;)

It's really hard! We've been dealing with this for a couple of months now (we're at 18 months). If I can (which you know it's not always possible) I will try to get her playing with a toy or two and play with her until she is actively playing on her own and try and slip away. It's hard on weekdays when I trying to get dinner on the table, though!!

I think just getting them engaged in something really helps with the whining. It's so hard when they only want you.

DS is 16.5 mo and I feel like the whining has lessened as he learns more words and can express what he wants. It's tough, good luck mama!

It's definitely the age. 15-18 months is HARD. They go through a lot of developmental changes in that time. It's definitely when they learn to whine and tantrum.

@SeptMomma12: it was really hard on me in terms of whining and tantrums. I literally could not make him breakfast without him whining and crying and pulling at my leg to be held. Suddenly at 18 months a switch went off and he became more independent and less whiny. It might not be as long of a stretch for u though!

@winniebee: Sorry you went through it too, but so glad to hear he's not the only one. I feel bad that he's suddenly so miserable, but I also miss my easygoing little guy!

15-18 months were rough for us too. All molars, a big move, one nap, and there's a huge wonder week (month) in there too. My advice is to so what you can to encourage independent okay and make sure you engage him in activities he likes! Tantrums were really bad for us then but got better around 18 months.

Ok ladies, I need some help before I go crazy. My LO (15 months old today) will not stop whining, and it's like nails on a chalkboard for me. He's had "cranky periods" before, but this started a couple of week ago and hasn't let up. At first I thought maybe he wasn't feeling well, but now I am almost 100% sure it's simply a reaction when he doesn't get his way (i.e., when I don't pick him up)...he can literally turn it on and off instantly.

Not sure it's related, but he definitely has a lot going on... He took his first steps two weeks ago...though he seems to have lost interest in that now. (Maybe that has something to do with it?) Plus all 4 molars have broken through in the last month.

Any tips? I don't want him to get used to getting everything he wants instantly, but I also can't handle hearing him whine like that:( Tonight it turned into a full scale "throw himself on the floor and scream" tantrum when I didn't pick him up right away. Anyone else's LO go through a similar phase at this age? I am terrified that we are starting the terrible two's 9 months early!
