This made me go back to an old email thread from when my LO1 was around 15 months and a bunch of other moms in my moms group were stressing about this.

Basically, many people were worried about their 15-month-olds having zero to three words and I can report that now, they're all 4 and talking a LOT.

My LO2 (16 months) has many fewer words than his older brother did at this age so I'm trying to be more intentional in the way I talk to him. I don't think you've done anything wrong though! Some of this stuff is not that intuitive.

A speech language pathologist in that moms group sent a few recommendations that I thought were helpful:
- Speak in short sentences at a slower rate.

- Spend at least 30 mins a day where you're on the floor with them while talking out everything you're doing. "Oh I see you're putting the block on top," then as you build you can say, "On top, on top, on top." "Open close open close" when playing with toys with doors. "Oh you're picking up puppy? Ok put down the block first." You get the idea. Just make sure it's 30 mins straight when you are not looking at phone or talking to another adult.

- Have them help you complete phrases such as "123 go!" while playing, then begin pausing after you say 123 waiting a few beats before you finish to give them opportunity. Another one they seem to like is "bubble bubble bubble pop" while doing bubbles.

- Have a daily routine that you consistently talk through such as getting dressed or brushing teeth when you talk out every step: "First we OPEN the cabinet, we PICK UP our toothbrush, we turn ON the water"... try to have at least one routine that you always talk through. Eventually begin to add pauses to give them opportunity to complete the sentences.

- While reading through books ask them to point to ID, assisting with hand over hand I'd necessary. Help them to use one finger to point.

Hope that helps!

I am both scared and relieved about this situation, but mostly I'm excited to get DS started and see how well he blossoms! I've already called and I'm just waiting for the call back to scheduale the apt. In my area that's usually 2-4 weeks later. I wanted to thank you all agin for your understanding, advice and compassion. There early is no place ANYWHERE like this community. You all are worth more to me than you'll ever know  .

My DS2 is the same age and we've noticed that he is a bit behind his older brother at the same age. We also noticed that we don't spend NEARLY as much time singing with him, talking to him exclusively and labeling things etc. I think it makes a diffference. But yes, I would still discuss it with your dr. tomorrow. He does sound a bit delayed, but it may be Easily remedied.

That is really quick to respond to his name, from not at all. It sounds like a good sign. This age can be confusing because they are doing a lot of transitions and they can suddenly make huge leaps. Lots of kids suddenly have a word explosion, which recently happened to my 17 month old who was slower to talk too. I would bring it up with the ped, note his progress, and s/he may just want to monitor, but have early intervention on your radar over the next month or so. Best wishes!

@nellywm: this just made me cry! Thank you so much! just over the past 3 days of me religiously trying to teach him his name, he gone from no response to about 40/50 percent now. It's strange too I've noticed today that he'll ignore me mostly, but his response to my MIL Is almost instantly, and he sees her daily. And you are 100percent right about the internet echoing fears. It makes sense because your searching issues with other people who are also searching their issues, if everything was fine why be on google? I cannot believe all was for one study!! And it's the first 18 things that pop up, when you google "toddler doesn't answer to name" . With you ladies as my witness I announce today I am staying the hell off of Google when it comes to my child's milestone! For my sanity and his :silly: my ped didn't even have hat as a question at his 9month, and I wonder if the fact that it was only one study is why.

For what it's worth, after my doctor asked about responding to his name at my LO's nine month appointment, I also googled it and found the results really scary--but the more I looked into it, the more it seemed like the link to autism was all based on a single study of a few dozen kids, and part of the group had been pre-selected as being high-risk for autism. I am not a medical professional and certainly am not up on all the research on this, but once I realized this I tried to take it with a grain of salt and remember that the internet is an echo chamber and can just as easily scare you for no reason as give you useful answers.

In any case, after that I really started trying to teach my LO his name and he started responding to it pretty quickly to it. Just doing stuff that I had never done before like saying "I'm Mommy! You are [LO]!" and pointing. And just trying to call out to him with his name more. I'm not sure if that helped or he was developing naturally, but he learned to respond pretty quickly.

I know responding to his name was just one of the issues you mentioned, but just wanted to share my experience with that one--agree with other posters that it's of course a good idea to explore your Qs with your doctor and consider EI, but I guess all I'm trying to say is that sometimes googling is the worst!

@Jackiedavis87: the eye contact is a great sign!! When I was extra worried about milestones at my daughter's appointments, I'd call and make up a reason that I had to come in that day instead of the next day as scheduled. I just wanted to get it over with to calm my nerves. Could you possibly try to see if you can get in today? I am an extreme worrier and had some very tough times with anxiety and panic attacks surrounding milestones. My DD is 2 now and my worries have pretty much faded away, but I have been there and it's no fun.

I look at it this way: better to raise the concern with your pediatrician than not, because you know your son best. If you don't mention it, I think the odds are slim that doctor will notice anything during that short visit.

Basically, there are 4 possible scenarios. Since (in my opinion) only 1 has a downside, I think it is DEFINITELY worth talking to your doctor.
* If you ask, and everything is fine = yay!
* If you don't ask, and everything is fine = yay, but you don't know, and may keep worrying...
* If you ask, and something is concerning = you can get testing and early intervention right away - also yay because you are proactively addressing your son's needs!
* If you don't ask, and there really is something concerning that goes un-diagnosed, than you have delayed valuable treatment, which you may regret = not good

@Truth Bombs: @wrkbrk: @Mrs. Pickle: @looch: y'all are mostly makeing me feel less concerned. I'm going to try not to worry, the ped will say what he says, and I do trust his opinion. he is the most recommended ped in our area and has been in practice for 25years, so I'm sure he has seen a lot. As for EI I'll wait to see what he says and if I don't feel consciences by the time I leave i will give a call.

@CatchAFallingStar: I call him by a couple Of nicknames at home. He doesn't know toys by name. His eye contact is perfect, he searches people out, he looks for a reaction whenever he does things.

I would get an evaluation and maybe ask to see another pediatrician in the practice, why not do it? If you're concerned, your instincts might be trying to tell you something.

I personally believe knowledge is power. If there's an issue, you can address it. If not, you can stop worrying.

@Truth Bombs: Got it! FWIW I think its common for kids to stop using words they know and then go back to them. I hear that all the time from my daycare parent friends! DS has mama and maybe 5 animal sounds but that is really it. Otherwise it is just pointing and whining lol.

@wrkbrk: No the pediatrician is not concerned. He said 3-5 is his minimum threshold for concern at 15 months. I think the biggest issue for me is comparing to my daughter. I know at her 18 month appt they asked me about words and I told them I stopped counting at 50. So my son is "delayed" in the sense that he's well behind her. But he did walk up to me this weekend and say "mama up" so I'm trying not to stress too much. The biggest thing that stresses me out is sometimes he'll stop using a word he knows for a while, but then he gets it back.
