DS was a late clapper. He seems to understand things long before he actually does them, too. I can have a whole conversation with him nodding, shaking his head and pointing but he only has a handful of words at 19 months.

@runsyellowlites: I think P is probably fine and on her own timetable but I think if you are paranoid you should get her evaluated. One of the best pieces of advice I got from another parent (sort of similar to what Mrs. Twine said) is you have to push and advocate for your LO if you feel like something may be delayed because you can never gain back that time (to get diagnosed, therapy, whatever). I feel like I am super sensitive and vigilant about this since LO was a preemie so she's definitely on her own schedule!

I don't know how this works in other states, but is there a Head Start or a Parent-Child center near you? Around here they will meet with families and do screenings- could be a way to get her screened / get recommendations without seeing a pediatrician first.

My son was a late clapper. I can't recall how old, but definitely past 12 months. Does bang objects together (other than your hands)? Our pediatrician was not worried because he did the motion with other items. Since he is doing the motion with your hands, I would not worry about it.

I'm not sure how it is in TX, but here, I was told by another mom with all her kids in EI, that early intervention can be done by a self referral, that you wouldn't need a pediatrician or other doctor to sign off on an evaluation. It might be worth checking into even if you have a hint of a concern?

@Mrs. Twine: Thank you for responding! G was ahead with everything so alot of times I go back & forth between worrying & then being fine (just b/c I had such a different experience).

There have been quite a number of fine motor skill things she's been late with (just started feeding herself), but her gross motor skills have been pretty much on track (early rolling, within average range for crawling, sitting, standing, and looks like she'll be walking soon). She seems to understand some things congnitively like "come here" and making me clap, but then others like waving bye (we really don't leave her much so that might attribute) and pointing to things she's behind in.

Idk.. her being all over the place confuses my mommy instinct. LOL. We have a HORRID medical community here so getting her any kind of eval for anything would require a 2+ hour commute (part of the reason we are between pedis).

All that rambling I guess to say that I guess for now I feel okay with where she is & am just kind of keeping note & watching things. I think if she still wasn't doing some of these things by 18 mths I might start worrying again (she's one that likes to jack with me & right about the time I start to worry she picks up a bunch of new milestones & then goes another big stretch.. lol).

I agree with children being on their own timetable. The only thing I would ask you to consider, just because I wish that I had, are motor planning/processing issues. As it turns out, Ellie has some large motor processing issues (she is currently in OT to address them) and when she was younger and not meeting some milestones I had my concern brushed off by the pediatrician. I wish I would have been more active in seeking out additional evaluation because I think she would have benefitted from OT when she was much younger (like P's age, even). Do you have any worries yourself? I would say that if you, personally, feel she is developing on her own, healthy trajectory, don't stress. Especially since she clearly understands what it means (and is smart enough to make mom do it!!). :) She sounds like such a sweetheart. :)

I don't normally post about milestones b/c I know P has been a bit behind the curve and so I don't worry about them much, but I thought getting some others to weigh in might be helpful.

P knows what clapping is, and when I ask her "want to clap" she promptly (and forcefully) will grab my hands and clap them together BUT she will not clap her own hands (she will literally fish my hands from behind my back or wherever else I'm trying to hide them to grab them & clap them together).... I really haven't worried about it b/c I know she understands the concept but at the same time 15 mths seems pretty late to still not be doing it on her own.

A friend who works closely with a wide range of kids says she's seen some really early bloomers & really late so she doesn't think I have any reason to be concerned since P is coming along with other milestones & hasn't shown signs of regression. We're currently between pedis & tbh don't see us having one in the soon future so asking them isn't really an option, but I was just wondering what some of you other bees have experienced.
